Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Learning DrumCustomer Review: Not what I expected from Leapfrog Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this drum when my son was about 6 months. I was hoping it would be something he could play with while sitting. He is now 10 months and still thinks the raised characters on the toy are much more interesting then anything the toy does.
This toy is NOT interactive!!! When hit it does say a letter or number name and show that letter or number on the top of the drumb, but it plays music almost continuously and will start talking if nothing happens for a brief time. I didn't have time between the music going off and the talking to encourage my son to play with the toy. It also turns itself off very quickly. Maybe keeps children with attention problems busy?
Most of my son's toys are avaliable for him to play with. This one is sitting on a shelf with his board books. The books are pulled off the shelf and explored every day, this toy hasn't been touched except when I pulled it off the shelf to show him how it worked. We prefer to read books together.
Customer Review: My little drummer boy Summary: 5 Stars
My son got this for Christmas when he was 11 months old. He was fascinated by the lights on top and the voice that spoke when he hit it. He loved it! He is now almost 3 and we still bring this toy into the "rotation" every few weeks. He is hard on things...it has taken several hits on the hardwood floors without any problems. He also likes to beat on it with drumsticks and it has held up well. I love the volume control...a lifesaver after an afternoon of beating on a drum! The toy is still in great shape and we're about to introduce it to our 5 month old son if his brother will share! I am confident that it will hold up just as well for him. As a former teacher I place high value on educational toys. I only rated the value at 4 stars because I'm not sure my son ever learned the alphabet or numbers from playing with this. However, the combination of listening and touching together covers 2 different learning styles and reinforces language. All in all, a great toy.
Customer Review: Fun but not educational Summary: 4 Stars
We bought this toy when our daughter was 4 months old.
Now she is 1 yr old and she uses this drum every day.
The first couple of months (from 4 to 6 months old), she used it just for a few moments. Now, she likes to hit it over and over with her hand or with whatever toy she has in her hand (a ball, a drum stick, a toy-coin, a princess doll, etc).
She plays with it several times a day, but she doesn't stays long with it. A couple of minutes every time, I think...
The educational part is not very good for us, because my baby like to hit the drum over and over and she doesn't give it time to hear the complete number or letter.
I really don't care about this because she has baby books that she really likes and we can take all the time in the world with each number, so she has been learning them well.
I recommend this as a fun toy to keep near your baby. If she gets bored, she will go to this several times.
Customer Review: The Toy Is Not A Real Big Hit With My Kids Yet Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this toy the other day for my 8 and a half month old baby. At first she was really interested in it...now she will play with it for a couple of seconds and then crawl away from the toy. My 2 year old enjoyed it for about the first 30-45 minutes but now will not play with it much at all. My two year old likes the toys for a few minutes but she rarely ever shows much interest in toys anyways; I hope that they will both play with it in time because this toy I believe is very interesting and it will help recognize the alphabet in writing visually and verbally.....I cannot seem to get her to even repeat the alphabet for me...so that is why this year my daughter is getting all educational toys for Christmas (mainly neurosmith toys). I just hope that she will play with them more because of the prices that were paid on it all. Over all though I like this toy. It has good sound and it is very clear pronouncing the numbers and alphabet and is also very durable.
Customer Review: Not really a drum Summary: 1 Stars
If you're looking for an electronic noise producer, buy this. If you want a drum or musical instrument, try Little Tikes piano/xylophones or something else that isn't electronic. This toy sings at you and harasses your kid "Come on everyone play the drum" until he comes over to play with it, and then when he does it doesn't even sound like drum (not even an electronic drum). Leap Frog doesn't tell you this, but most of the sounds that come out of the toy are kids talking and singing rather than music that your child is making while playing with it.
If you like the fact that this introduces the alphabet, you'd be much better off with Leap Frog's Discovery Ball. When kids press the letters on it, it says the name of the letter, makes the phonetic sound, or plays a few seconds of a children's song (depending on which mode it's in). I LOVE the Discovery Ball, so I was really surprised how awful this other toy from Leap Frog could be.
