Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Learning DrumCustomer Review: Fun Little Toy For A Baby Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this toy for my daughter when she was a year old. It took her a while to get used to it, but when she did, she loved it! I don't think she learned anything, but she had fun with it. I believe she memorized the 'play the drum' song. It wasn't super loud either, which was nice.
Other pluses: No need for assembly, just put some batteries in and play! Toy shuts off by itself when not in use for a while. The batteries last quite a while. I believe I only changed the batteries once the whole time she had it (about two years). It's very durable. It took a lot of abuse and still worked perfectly. They have a variety of little games (like 1-10, A-B-C, copy the rhythm, singing and playing) so a child won't get sick of playing with it over and over again. Also, my daughter liked the LED lights on the top of the drum. It helped to keep her amused.
Once she turned three, she mostly lost interest in the toy, so I gave it away, but I still thought it was a good investment. She got a lot of use out of it, and I would recommend it to any parent with a baby.
Customer Review: Please take this annoying toy away... Summary: 1 Stars
We almost threw this toy out the window, but decided against it in order to spare someone the agony of finding it and giving it to their own kids. My 11 month-old daugter got this for Christmas, and at first she would get scared whenever the extremely loud (even in the low setting) annoying kids voices would go on when she hit the drum. After a while she warmed up to it and started to bang away. What I find annoying with this toy is that while it is supposed to be intertactive, it basically tells the child what to do with it, and how to play with it. It is equivalent to watching television and changing the channels. It amazes me how they can take such a simple toy, such as a drum, and completely ruin it by adding all types of lights and voices. Lately she usually plays with it for, say, 2 minutes and then goes to her bucket and blocks and can entertain herself for a good 1/2 hour or so. Even in the drum sounds mode it still has annoying vocies that tell you how to play the drum. Please do yourself and your friends a favor, and do not get this toy nor give it away as a gift.
Customer Review: Play Drum! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this drum for my nephew 1st birthday last year. This was one of his favorite toys. He carried this little drum with him everywhere! At first he was glorified by the red letters & numbers on top of the drum base. He realized when he struck the drum he would hear "A" in a soft spoken voice and see "A" in bright red. When he struck the drum fast the letter would appear fast and be spoken fast.He also learned how to control the sound, turn it off and on, switch the "abc", "123" controls etc. The only negative about the drum is the repetition. My nephew loved the different melody's the drum played. I myself became annoyed with "Play the drum everyone, everyone" and when the child don't touch the drum the drum will say "Thank you for choosing leap frog..bye bye" The drum is called a learning drum for the purpose "you" have to learn the child the basics, with the drum. With patience and trial and error the child will develop skills from the drum.
Customer Review: LeapFrog's best product for toddlers Summary: 5 Stars
Both our kids had so much fun with this toy that we got our one-year-old the more expensive LeapFrog LittleTouch. Big mistake. We ought to have left well-enough alone because she still has more fun with the Learning Drum!
What makes this product so much fun is that the kids get to bang on it. There are several settings, and depending upon the setting it will either recite the alphabet, count, play music, or make drumming sounds. While doing so, the drum lights up with the numbers, letters or whatever corresponds to the setting. Another setting turns it off or lowers the volume, so parents can restrict the annoyance factor.
Besides the educational value and the fun factor, the product is also tough. Ours has survived wood floors, a cottage in Northern Ontario, a Florida tropical storm, the beach, airport security and, most importantly, sibling rivalry. I am familiar with other LeapFrog products for toddlers, and this is by far my (and more importantly my one-year-old's) favorite.
Customer Review: Should have a volume control Summary: 3 Stars
We got this for our daughter when she was 9 months old and it took awhile for her to develop interest in it. It has four settings: the alphabet (which can be played to three different songs, including "la cucaracha"), a count to 1-10 setting, a drum setting with two different sounds(timpani and snare) and a "sing and play" setting. We found this one especially annoying as it features a canned sound track of kids singing "play the drum everyone, play the drum" and "hit the drum! It's fun. listen!" reapeatedly. Also, the drum setting doesn't really allow "free" playing--you are always playing out the beats to the "play the drum" song. But our daughter does like the yellow button on the front that allows her to change the song that's playing for the ABC setting--though she still hasn't figured out how to use the slider switch to change between settings. All and all, I'd say this was a medium purchase--it keeps her engaged for about 5 minutes at a time.
