Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Learning Drum

Customer Review: A wonderful Musical Toy
Summary: 5 Stars

My son received this last year as a Christmas gift. He was 11 months old then & quickly it became his favorite toy. Anytime we needed to distract him, all we had to do was sing the main tune from the toy & he would look all over for it. He learned to work the buttons fast, and enjoyed banging on it to advance the numbers or letters.

It has 4 functions, ABC's, 123's (to 10), drum banging, and song playing. At any time you can press the star shaped music button for a song. The toy's Leapfrog voice applauds the child on his efforts. When there are several seconds between banging, the voice encourages more play. Finally, when they up and leave it, after a few minutes, it says "Goodbye", and turns itself off. Our batteries have lasted almost a year!

Now my 6 month old loves it!

UPDATE******
This has lasted through FOUR kids, boys no less, and shows virtually no wear. The drum holds up under repeated banging, and has entertained my children without fail. (A few adults too!) I have given this as a gift to more than one friend, and they all seem to love it as well. Our household's original recipient, now 8 still finds it fun to play with and shows his brothers how!

Customer Review: Nursery Equivalent of the Holiday Fruitcake
Summary: 1 Stars

I suspect this item is purchased on the brand strength of LeapFrog and its reputation for educational toys. In our home, The Learning Drum has proved to be a dud with both the child for whom it was intended and the parents who bought it for her. My daughter found the music and voices distressing (she would cry and demand that it be turned off and later, when she was older, she would try and turn it off herself.) My daughter never got involved with this toy long anough to learn anything from it and; there are certainly more pleasant and effective ways of teaching your child the ABCs, numbers, music, patterns, and cause-and-effect. I found the audio annoying as well (and the sound clips VERY short) and the inclusion of the Mexican Cockroache Song (La Cucaracha) with car horn blasts off-putting. The unit is touch sensitive but it quickly turns itself off which is a blessing in our case. It IS extremely durable, in fact, virtually indestructable, which means it can be passed on to some other nursery. If you are contemplating buying one, I would wait. I'm sure there are others for whom this is not exactly a keepsake item and would be happy to pass it along to you.

Customer Review: Fun so far
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this two days ago for my 9 month old daughter. She really loves to pound on the drum and we've even gotten several squeals of delight. She seems to like the music mode best at this point. I love how this toy targets multiple learning elements, like music, gross and fine motor coordination, and learning cause/effect. I look forward to seeing if the time spent with the 'abc' and '123' modes will have an outcome on her memory and learning.

Edited to update at 12 months:

My daughter is still playing with the drum, although she has many more toys now that christmas has come and gone. When she spends time with the drum, she pounds on it still, but she has figured out now that the buttons on the front are responsible for different things.

It's great to see her using the same toy in different ways and that she is able to grow with the toy. She will swap out the snare drum and metal drum modes by pushing the yellow star. She loves to dance to the music that the drum plays. Soon she's off to another toy....nothing personal against the drum, that's just a 12 month old for you! She plays with this much more than the Discovery Ball by Leapfrog.

Customer Review: Okay, but with some big flaws
Summary: 2 Stars

We received this drum as a gift, and we feel that it has two big flaws, the first one being the most serious.

#1 The drum shuts off when it is not hit for 30 seconds. The drum should not shut off unless we turn it off!

Our son is frequently frustrated by this toy. He'll get distracted by another toy for a minute, and then return to the drum - and then it doesn't respond when he hits it. We also have a Fisher Price Bouncin' Bongo, which he likes much better. It is always on, and so anytime he likes, he can walk over and hit it and it responds.

#2 The drum talks too much. We really wish there was a setting where it just played sounds, and didn't talk to us. I have no problem with the learning settings, where the drum recites numbers and letters. But even on the music and drum settings, it is constantly talking, saying things like, "Play the drum! It's fun!" and "Play the drum, everyone, play the drum!" We really don't like the constant chatter.

We wish we could combine the educational features of this toy with the more practical design of the Bouncin' Bongo.

Customer Review: You say it's loud?? What? I cant hear you!!!!
Summary: 2 Stars

I first saw this toy online and then went to BRU to check it out with my 6 month old daughter. She seemed interested but I was hesitant because the toy seemed annoying. I didnt really want to spend 19.99 on a toy I couldnt stand to let her play with. Well I found it secondhand yesterday for less than $5 so I thought why not.

This toy has got to be the most annoying toy Ive come accross!!!!!

There are two volumes LOUD and EXTREMELY LOUD! Why a toy company would make a toy so loud that a child will be playing with that is a foot away from their ears is beyond me.

This teaches ABC, 123 and a kind of simon says. The music that it plays along with these teaching sessions are short tunes that are looped over and over for our enjoyment.

My daughter is into whacking things right now so that is why I bought this for her. She gets enjoyment from whacking the drum and seeing the lights and hearing the sounds.

I hate this toy, its louder than it needs to be and it doesnt have enough variety in music. Im glad I didnt spend the $20 on it.
