Customer Review: Jack says This Drum is the Bomb
Summary: 5 Stars

Well, my dad got this in the mail at work just before my first birthday this past year. He figured it couldn't be for him, because he already knows his ABC's and stuff. Mostly. Although maybe a lot of people at the rehearsal studio would like to have used it. Anyway, since it said "to Jack from Aunt Kelly", it didn't take us long to figure it out who the correct recipient was.

This drum is really sweet. It makes all sorts of different noises at any time of day or night, which is very handy when you want to get mom's attention. However, the very best part of the drum is its portability. It has a handle that allows one to drag it just about anywhere you want to go. The front steps are a bit of a problem, but I can't tackle those myself yet anyway, so I'm sure I'll figure out a solution by then.

I was so impressed about this drum that I called Aunt Kelly right away to make my mom say Thank You. Mom said, "Jack, can you say Thank You to Aunt Kelly?" and I said, "Yeah," so I think my benefactor completely understood the depth of my gratitude.

Hmm. I think next year I'll ask for a trumpet.

Addendum, 8 months later:

Jack informs me there is one problem with his drum: he cannot figure out how to turn off the music in order to play the drum to whatever melodies he chooses. So Caveat Emptor on that point. He still enjoys it, however!---LR&R (Aunt Kelly)

Customer Review: Overall good toy
Summary: 4 Stars

My son received this drum as a gift for Christmas last year when he was 7 months old. At first, he didn't use the toy at all, but I figured that he would when he got a little older.

He started really noticing the drum when he was close to a year old. He is now 18 months, and still enjoys the toy. He likes to dance to the music, and see how fast he can hit the drum. For that reason, I'm not sure how educational the drum really is. There are four settings on the drum. One for letters, numbers, beats, and playing notes. Each time you hit the drum, depending on the setting, you hear a letter, number, beat, or tone. My son just hits it so fast, you can't even hear each letter.

At least one of the other reviews noted that it turns off automatically, and it is difficult for young ones to turn it back on. I agree that it turns off easily. But one of the favorite things that my son likes to do is to switch the settings. This turns the drum on if it has turned off. At about 11 months old, my son learned that he needed to turn that little switch to get it to make noise.

Overall, I like the drum quite a bit. We now have two of them: one at my house, and one at my parents'. Don't expect your toddlers to learn how to count or say their ABC's with this, and I don't think that you will be disappointed. It is a great tool for hand-eye coordination and cause-and-effect, both with hitting the drum, and learning how to change the settings.

Customer Review: Not so fun...
Summary: 2 Stars

My first complaint is, the age recommendation. It recommends start age of six months. At six months my granddaughter did not have the strength to make it "happen" nor the concept that her hitting would result in anything.
Second, the fact that it "shuts down" if she leaves it for a time, but does not reactivate if/when she returns unless reset. At six months she couldn't even begin to concieve a reset button. I dont know a six month old who can. Therefore, the lack of strength for desired play, and the lack of concept to reset left the drum sitting wherever she abandoned it to play with her other toys that reactivated when she resumed play with them. She would return to the drum, find nothing, and leave again, and again...
She has just turned fourteen months and has only JUST figured out the reset button. STILL she cannot play unless an adult has already turned it on. She has turned it on by herself a few times, and I am hopeful she will soon have that part "down pat" as well. Knowing what I know now, I would not purchase this toy. But if you plan to, I suggest waiting until your child is at least one year old.
The upside.. her grandpa likes it...
I have only just found this wonderful tool for rating and reviewing today's popular toys. I wish I had found it sooner!! I wont make the few mistakes I have made again in the future. I plan to read what you, my fellow toy buyers, have to say!!!!

Customer Review: Fantastic Toy!!
Summary: 5 Stars

April 15, 2004: I bought this for my 12 month old niece for Christmas. I have her four days a week and this toy is the best one i've seen to make her smile and happy. She LOVES it! She loves hitting the drum(as i knew she would, because she drums on everything she can find), and she loves the letters and music functions the best. The drum sound function is way too quiet and you can barely hear it over the sound of beating the drum, but all the other functions(numbers 1-10, and of course the letters and the music) are great. This is also an incredibly durable toy. This baby throws it around all the time, stands on it, sits on it, beats it with any various objects she can get her hands on, etc. I'm amazed that after almost four months of violently beating on this toy practically every day, it's still working. When it does die(as is practically inevitable with this girl's toys) I will definitely buy her another one, because it's such a fantastic toy!!!

Update, June 8, 2006: Nearly 2 1/2 years after buying this toy, my (now 3 year old) niece still has it and still likes it. It seems to have gotten a bit more sensitive with age (and being thrown, beaten, stood on, and dropped regularly), but still works quite well. I've never even had to replace the batteries. I'm so impressed with this toy! I got one for my now 10 month old nephew for Christmas too. He'll no doubt have it for years to come!

Customer Review: Won't SHUT UP!!
Summary: 2 Stars

My daughter recieved this drum last year for Christmas when she was 9 months old. She didn't play with it at first which I didn't think was that big of a deal because she got so many other items. Now here we are a year later and she has yet to become interested in this drum. Sure she has hit is several times and she will get into a spell once a month where she will hit is repeatedly but then quickly loses interest.

The drum however is disliked by the adults even more!!! The drum is VERY sensitive and will sound off if I walk heavy. We store this drum in her cubbies and if she digs in a separate cubby for a different toy, the drum starts singing. That I understand, but what I don't get is why it won't SHUT UP!!! This toy takes FOREVER to stop singing. I know most of her toys have a timer so after the child loses interest it will make noise or say something to try and draw the child's attention back over to play but this toy is UNBELIEVABLE!!! The toy starts singing and it is a good 5-7 minutes later that it FINALLY stops talking. So that is really annoying when it accidently goes off and then you can't get it stop singing and when it finally does, you're walking out the room singing "Play the drum everyone play the drum, go ahead hit the drum it's fun. . . " I wish my daughter had never received this drum and would never recommend it to someone else!!
