Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Learn & Groove Musical Table

Customer Review: My Son LOVES This!
Summary: 5 Stars

My son was given the Spanish only version of this toy, and he loves it. The set up was really easy, which is a bonus for me, since every toy now comes with an hour of assembly. The legs are removable, so if your little one likes to try and use it as a climbing step like my son, you can remove them and make it a toy that sits flat on the floor.

There are 2 settings, a music notes version where all the keys play music of some kind, and a "learning" version where the music is in the form of singing colors, shapes, numbers, and words. DO NOT BUY THIS TOY IF YOU WANT SOMETHING FOR YOUR CHILD TO ONLY PLAY MUSIC ON. This isn't that kind of toy.

So far, my only complaints are that the little door that makes sounds when it is opened or closed comes right off. It wasn't given enough hinge to keep it in place when it is tugged on, even slightly, I'm trying to come up with a way to fix that. Also, My son has had it less than a month and the batteries are already dead. I wish they had made it take larger batteries that might have lasted longer. He does play with it a lot, but I would prefer longer battery life.

My new favorite feature of toys is the volume switch! This toy has 2 volume settings (the on/off switch is on the bottom) and the first setting is on the lower volume! Which is great if you're turning the toy on blindly and don't want it on full volume.

I haven't had any of the problems with flimsiness, musical skipping, or a lack of durability that some of the 1 and 2 star raters have had. In fact, I've dropped it from a few feet a couple of times, tripped over it once, and my son has tipped it over numerous times. It still works just fine.

Customer Review: Lots of fun for babies who love to stand!
Summary: 4 Stars

We purchased this table when our son was 7 months old and starting to pull up to a stand wherever he could. The second we assembled it, his face lit up and he started pushing buttons, flipping the "page" and opening the little compartment. He refused to play with anything else for a good month!

The first 2 weeks we had it, we had to sit behind him the whole time he played with it. He wanted to cruise to different sides of the table, but didn't know how to move his feet or land on his bottom. We'd gently guide him into a sit when he'd start to fall, and he eventually was able to do that on his own.

His favorite thing to do with this table is open the little compartment and put things in and out. I usually hide a couple plastic links in there for him to find. He is turning 1-year-old and still enjoys that! He plays with the table less now that he is close to walking and always on the move, but he still loves it. He'll occasionally crawl under it and get it stuck on his back, but it doesn't bother him. He has also pulled it over onto himself, but it is light and he just looked surprised.

The "demo" batteries it came with lasted 2 months, then it started making weird machine gun sounds. Fresh batteries fixed it, though it sometimes plays music all on its own! I like that one mode has music without words. I find myself turning it to that all the time because kid's toys always have those super-peppy voices that get annoying after a while. Hah.

This is a great buy for babies who really love to stand. I wish it was a little sturdier, but then it might hurt them if it tipped over. Can't have everything!

Customer Review: Rock on!
Summary: 5 Stars

SUCH a great musical toy. Our 6 month old returns to it again and again out of everything she has. First off, the construction is sturdy - easy to wipe down without too many nooks and crannies for grime to collect, legs that snap easily on and off despite repeated use, and a wide main body that can take some beating despite being pushed around the room and shoved into the toy basket at night.

My favorite part, though, is that this is one of the only toys that makes sound that hasn't made me want to throw it out the window on day 1, or day 31, of my daughter playing with it. Hearing all the different musical genres represented on the "music" setting is a hoot. I know there's an educational setting too - but we've been having so much fun with the piano part that we haven't even gotten to the learning setting yet.

Another plus is that my girl loves to practice standing by using this toy with the legs on even though she's only 6 months old! Of course, I have to support her, but I can see she's building her leg and abdominal muscles by leaning over to bang away at the keys. I also like that the buttons are all so responsive. On some toys, a specific sound will "play out" before a new button or key can be pressed. But, much to our delight, the musical table will immediately stop and play a new sound each time a different button is pressed. It allows for some little jams, even when mom and dad are playing along.

I wouldn't hesitate to get this as a gift, and I completely understand why I've seen reviews suggesting that even older toddlers continue to play with this toy. A total winner.

Customer Review: Good Toy-Bad Design
Summary: 3 Stars

First off this toy does hold my sons interest so that is good. However the design needs work. DONT put the legs on unless you plan to keep them on. Design flaw #1-legs are NOT removable like other play tables (FP). Once they are on, you cannot take off & this was an issue for us. Our son is on the verge of being able to stand up so we put the legs on it (no where in the instructions does it say you cannot remove them) to see if it would work for him now. Well he was still a little to unstable so we wanted to take the legs off so he could still play while sitting, and yep, they wouldnt come off.

The second thing is the open close green part and the book, are not very durable. I have a 7m old son and he is just starting to move things around and open close, and he kept open and closing this and it broke off! Now if this is for babies and toddlers and it isnt made as such, they should not sell it. I mean how strong is a 7m old.

Then the book part from many, many times of open and closing it started to stutter on the song, because one song is one way and another is another way, and when you move them too much it just sounds like This toy isnt durable, I have had 1 month!

I called Leap Frog to ask for help and they were not really any help. They said I could ship it to them and they would send me another, but it would cost around [...]$ to ship back to them (I paid [...] for this)so that is worthless. So we hold him up to have him use this toy and everytime it stutters we shut it off for a couple minutes and then turn it back on (which really upsets my son).

Customer Review: Sub par toy broke within a month of my son playing with it
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this toy for my son BEFORE he was born in the hopes he would have fun with it when he grew old enough. When he was about 6 months, we decided to take it out and start to have him play with it without the legs. From day 1, we had a ton of problems with this toy. Even if the power switch was turned to off, it would drain the batteries, wasting tons of AAA batteries before we decided we would have to remove the batteries every time he was done playing with it, not really an easy thing to do with two phillips screws holding the door on. Finally after about a month of that, it stopped playing music completely.
After writing back and forth with Leapfrog, they held firm to their 90 day warranty on their toys...90 days for a kids toy?? Our son was very gentile with this toy, and it gave us fits from the beginning. Leapfrog offered 10% off another Leapfrog product on their website...why would I want another table that didn't work in the first place?? That was the last straw - I went out and bought the Fisher Price learning table, and believe it or not, that one is superior in MANY ways.
Not only does it play 3-4 times as many songs, but it's built more sturdy, he seems to have a lot more fun with it, and I have the satisfaction of moving completely away from a company that doesn't back their products.
This experience drove me to start a group on Facebook to educate parents or relatives considering buying Leapfrog products to consider other alternatives. The Fisher Price table is so much better than this one - please check it out. You can thank me later.
