Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Learn & Groove Musical TableCustomer Review: Leaping for Leapfrog Summary: 4 Stars
For the last couple of months, my son Franco, who is now 14 months old, has been playing with the "Leap Frog Activity Table". He received it as a present and has not stop playing with it, a rare occurrence since he looses interest in playing with his toys very quickly. This toy is not only educational, but it has so many features that it keeps my baby crawling and cruising just to get to it. It took my husband 3 minutes to assemble and the fun began.
The Leap Frog Activity Table has two major functions. One setting is for letters/numbers and the other setting is for music/songs. A book placed in the middle of the table determines which mode is set. So, on a flip of a page, it will either be in letter/number mode or in music mode. When the book is being flipped from one mode to another, lights around the table light up. A must for Franco. There is also a piano in one side with bright colored keys, on another, there are some instruments, gadgets and noisemakers, and even a secret compartment on another, which I found he keeps his cheerios. All functions on the table recite colors/shapes being touched, instruments being played with music and songs. For example, when he touches the yellow triangle, the table will say, "yellow-square." When he touches the piano, music plays with lights flickering all over the table. My baby absolutely loves this toy, and which so much stuff to do, he never gets bored.
As for me, this toy is not bulky or big, so I leave it in the corner of our living room without taking much space. It is very easy to clean, simply by wiping it down and easy to transport in your car when traveling. What else could I ask for?
I love this activity table simply because my baby does. I take great comfort in knowing my son is playing with something that partakes in learning and in providing so much entertainment. His eyes light up every time he sees his table. His tiny hands clap while he wiggles his bottom to the music. I absolutely love it. Finally, a toy that engages my son's attention and that is able to keep him busy for long periods of time. I totally recommend this toy to any parent with a child that is able to pull themselves up. You will not be disappointed.
Customer Review: Okay, but overpriced Summary: 2 Stars
Jan. 24th-
First of all, we've had this toy a month, and the batteries have already died, or else there are more serious issues.
Other than that, it's a good table, but now that the noises and lights don't work, my daughter isn't interested in it unless there are snacks in the little compartment. Prior to the batteries dying, my daughter, who is 15 months old and got it for Christmas, enjoyed it, but I wouldn't say it's her favorite toy. She is just as happy with a little drum that has balls you put into it and take back out. However, before the batteries died, I did think it was worth the money we paid and wished we had bought it sooner.
It would be nice if the numbers and letters lit up when the songs are played in order to associate the sounds of the numbers/letters with the songs. However, if you are depending on a toy to teach your child these things, you have serious issues anyway. She dances to the music and claps her hands.
We have not had any problems with stability, but she was well past the point of needing it to pull up when we bought it. Hannah does try to flip the pages as if she expects there to be more pages. The sound quality is good, and I love the bilingual aspect of it when it is in learning mode. It is easy to assemble and take apart.
We managed to get it on sale... $10 off plus a 15% off coupon, and I am so glad we did not pay full price. I will update this review after I try changing the batteries... the rating will improve, or else I will drop it to one. It's frustrating that the batteries died already. Hannah even got mad when she tried to play with it and it would not work.
I changed the batteries today, and it's working again. With all the things this toy does, 3 AA's just not provide enough life for them to last very long. the first set lasted 3 weeks.
Feb 9th- either the new batteries are already dead, or it has a short in it. We will be digging out our receipt and returning this toy.... we may exchange it for another, perhaps it was a "lemon".
Customer Review: Completely addictive for just-learning-to-stand little ones! Summary: 5 Stars
My son's babysitter bought this table for him when he was 11 months old and just getting into standing for long periods. Soon, I was joking that it made her obsolete. He spent about an hour a day, in small increments, just walking around the table (there's something interesting on every side) and manipulating all the various tabs, switches, knobs, and buttons, enjoying the sounds they produced.
This toy is brilliantly designed. Here are my favorite features:
1. It's pleasant for mommy to listen to. No shrill "fake baby" voices or cacophonous "music." The piano keys play pleasant jazzy riffs that actually sound really musical. The voice is an accomplished-sounding female singing in a jazz/R&B style. There are a great multitude of sounds and songs on this toy, and none of them are hideous, jarring, or overly loud. Mommy's nerves appreciate that. In fact, many times I found myself scat-singing along with the joyful female voice!
2. The controls are all different -- not just an assortment of buttons. There's a "book" with a "page" that "turns"; there's a banjo with a neck that moves; there's a spinner; there's a compartment that opens and shuts; there's a "slide" on a trombone, etc. Flipping certain switches had the effect of changing "modes," which kept the kid engaged for long, long periods, as he tried to figure out what controlled what and what kinds of effects each switch might have.
3. There's a Spanish mode. It's always good to expose tykes to language early, and this is a pleasant start. The instrumental songs are different in Spanish mode, too; they're, well, Spanish songs.
4. It's a sturdy little table, well able to handle the weight of a leaning toddler.
About a year ago, when my boy was 2, we had to put the table away for space reasons (construction work). Just after he turned 3, we took it out again, and he lit up with joy and fell to playing with it passionately once again. That's what I call a great toy.
Customer Review: Great learning toy to keep em busy--wish I'd gotten it sooner! Summary: 5 Stars
I had been wanting this toy since my daughter was 3 months old but never got it (it was on her X-mas list). I didn't think it was worth the [...] the store was charging so I eventually forgot about it until I found it in a thrift store for [...] when my daughter was a year old!
Let me tell you, it is definately worth $45!
You can take the legs off to put it on the floor for the little ones, then put the legs back on when you have a cruiser or baby who is pulling up. Unfortunately, you'll probably need to take the legs back off once they start climbing but that's no big deal.
There are so many different songs, you'll never get sick of them. There are jazz/blues/swing style songs and traditional kids songs. Even a jazzy version of the ABCs and counting 1-10. It is super easy to switch between modes, all the baby has to do is turn the page. One of most fun activity on it is the trombone slider, which plays a cool trombone riff as you slide it! My daughter's favorite activity is the piano which (in music mode) plays a different jazz piano riff for each key. She rocks back and forth ala Ray Charles as she gets down with her bad self!
The only thing I don't like about it is the little green door (its purple on mine) that opens up into a little compartment. At first it was cool because when you open it it either sings some cool scat-stlye songs (or in the learning mode says "open," "closed," "hello," "goodbye.") and I decided it would be fun to stick some cheerios in there as a surprise. But eventually my daughter managed to pull that little door off and though its easy to put back on she ALWAYS pulls it off so eventually I just took it away so it wouldn't get lost. Only now its hard to get it to sing the scat-songs again.
Overall, an excellent purchase! It will certainly grow with your child and let them discover music and create music themselves.
Customer Review: Great for infants and learning disabled Summary: 5 Stars
I opened my home to foster an 11 month old who was severely overweight (30lbs) and an intellectually disabled 5 year old back in May of this year (2008). A friend of mine was gracious enough to gift me with this learning center after her 2 year old son was 'done' with it.
My 11 month old LOVES music. She is now 18 months and 6lbs lighter, and partially due to the learning center. It got her moving, and when she learned to stand, it got her grooving. On one page of the center book, everything talks; "Up/Down" "A, B, C" "Yellow, blue, red" etc. Turn the center page, and the same buttons now SING. Lots of catchy tunes.
The 5 year old is intellectually disabled and to our surprise, began picking up counting after a few months due to the catchy tunes, as well as his ABC's. The Leap Frog center worked more effectively than his special education teachers! (Which is saying a lot because they're working wonders, too!)
My 18 month old is built like a brick house, and is able to push and turn over everything. She can turn the center over with ease and does so, several times a day. Ever after being owned by my friends son for 2 years, and then going through 6 months with us, being moved, turned over and practically thrown, the center works like new. Beside a little dirt and some color fading, this product is simply amazing.
My only complaint would be that batteries tend to run out rather quickly when a product like this is so entertaining that it is played so often!
We have several other non-leapfrog learning centers, and they don't even compare. This, as far as I'm concerned, is a MUST HAVE toy. If my friend has another baby relatively soon, and I am forced to give it back, it WILL be a toy that I will immediately purchase to have in our home.
