Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Learn & Groove Counting MaracasCustomer Review: Great Value and Provides Distraction Type Fun. "Shake it Up" Summary: 5 Stars
These Counting Maracas are worth it but the musical one is truly fun and has a great beat. The female voice says "shake it up." My twin 9 month-olds play with them here and there except when I roll them around the house with the music one. You can try this activity I describle below.
The one that lights up and has sounds is fun, especially in the dark. They liked it right away. Our biggest game with that one is where I roll them around the house in an umbrella stroller in the dark or near-dark while they get to hold the musical maracas. They love that. And it's not boring because there are 3 different tunes and with different verbal themes (colors, numbers and a "shake it up" one). This maracas has a lot of great sound effects too and you can also select English or Spanish and choose between 2 volume levels. We use all the options. My twin babies feel important holding onto it while taking a ride around the house, one at a time.
The one that one just shakes and makes rattle noises is better than expected although still a little big for their 9-month old hands. They shake that one, not the musical one since that one doesn't rattle. It's a welcome addition to their toy collection but by far the best one is the musical maracas. The musical maracas didn't have to be shaped like a maracas because it's not for shaking.
One potential issue: The batteries for this one are very tiny. I'm going to have to replace mine any day now and I'm not certain it will be easy to find this type of battery.
Customer Review: Poor maracas Summary: 3 Stars
This cute gift was purchased for our son by his Father. Dad read reviews and really liked these little hand-held Latin instruments. They were rec'd packaged appropriately and removed from the box. Our son began to play and throw them around. Granted, I know toys for one year olds are susceptible to abuse and rough play, however, that same evening the light feature stopped working. One day only. I figured it would take sometime for our son to destroy them, but it only took one day.
His Dad and I had read that another parent reported that their toy stopped working too, but after a much longer time period. The toy is still good though. The light doesn't work, but the music still does (for all three different selection types). Our son also likes to play with the traditional maraca that came with the set - only rattling beads.
I did follow the instructions to change out the "demo" batteries, but that did not help. I also could not find a way to open up the light source to investigate the problem there.
LeapFrog does have a 3 month warranty, but the return process is detailed and time consuming, of which I don't have the time to return it.
Good Luck!!
Customer Review: Slow start, but 18-month-old likes these now! Summary: 4 Stars
I'd had my eye on these for a while, because our 18-month-old son loves music and has had a great time with the Laugh and Learn Piano from Fisher Price. When I finally received the maracas, though, he didn't seem at all interested. In fact, he seemed to dislike the noises they make. One is just a plastic maraca with shaker beads inside, which didn't much interest him. The other is a battery-powered one that lights different colors and has three settings (numbers, colors and music) in English and Spanish. After a while, he would pick up the one that has lights and sounds and check it out. Now he really seems to like it, although he gets bored if it's on the music setting, because it plays the same short refrain over and over again. (I get bored, too.) The reason I didn't give this toy five stars is because of the limited musical selections. All of the Fisher Price toys have numerous song options, which helps to toy to stay "fresh." This one only holds his attention for a few minutes at a time. I gave four stars for durability because we've only had them a month. In that time, though, he has chucked them around a fair amount, and they seem OK.
Customer Review: Pretty great Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this on a whim at Babies R Us. My daughter, who is 10 months, liked the shakers at a church play room, so I thought she might like these too. I was right. She absolutely loves this toy. She immediately figured out how to tap the one shaker to get it to make noises and change color. She even shakes it when it's off in the hopes of getting it to light up. And it keeps her occupied for a shockingly long time. She likes the other shaker too, which is not battery powered, but just rattles. The toy has three modes, numbers, colors and sound, and each of them is pretty cool. Since my daughter is only 10 months I don't think she's getting too much education out of it....but you can switch it to Spanish as well. The music gets really annoying after a while, and I always end up turning it off after like 15 minutes. But my kid LOVES this toy. It's pretty amusing to watch her play with it.
Customer Review: Cool toy Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter loves this toy, she's only 2. My oldest who is 4 tries to steal it every chance she gets. It's fun, to some it's annoying but I don't think so. It's loud on it's highest setting but my kids like it on the medium level sound setting. The last one broke because of a speaker malfunction. My husband didn't have a speaker to replace it so we bought a new one. Considering the typical abuse normal kids give to toys, I think this one lasted probably the longest out of our other kid's toys! We replaced it and my kids are thrilled!
This thing teaches:
Numbers
Colors of the rainbow
Has cool funny sounds
Teaches some Spanish
Yes I'd recommend this product. Probably to anyone under 3.
