Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Learn & Groove Alphabet DrumCustomer Review: meh! Summary: 3 Stars
I was planning on getting my child a drum because he loves to bang on things, and I got this one because I thought "Oh, multifunctional! It's a drum AND he can do letters and songs if he wants to." But in reality the "drum" sound is not very appealing whether the machine is off or on. My 18-month old does like the letters and songs, but the diction of the recorded voice is not clear enough to be teaching him anything. I often can't tell what the recorded voice is saying (a problem with MANY electronic toys, I find). I haven't donated this toy to some other unsuspecting mom yet, because my child will at least play with it on his own for 10 minutes, which is not true of all toys. So I think this toy is of reasonable use for giving a poor mom 10 minutes of peace, but I feel it is fairly useless for teaching the child anything. In retrospect, I wish I had gotten a basic "real" toy drum, since I think the fun value of that would last longer.
Customer Review: Maybe this is just for "bangers" Summary: 3 Stars
Our daughter has had this drum for at least three months, and hasn't shown much interest in it (or in banging things in general).
The toy itself it well made, and easily withstands the abuse a baby can throw at it. On my personal scale of "how annoying is this noise-making toy", I'd have to say that this rates squarely between "Whoever got her this is going to pay dearly." and "Oh no, daddy can't find the batteries!"
As others have noted, getting your baby to make the connection that hitting the drum will make it do something is difficult, as the drum is constantly blinking or playing music. If your baby is banging on tables, trays, pets, etc., making the connection might be much easier.
I think the LeapFrog Learn & Groove Counting Maracas are better designed, and more interesting for babies.
Customer Review: This drum is interesting, but needy Summary: 3 Stars
I was very impressed with this toy when I saw it on the shelves, and we do still use it, but this is one of those "needy" electronic toys that demands attention even when the baby is done playing with it. I find that incredibly annoying. My son may have moved on to another thing, and the drum will suddenly shout for his attention, distracting him from whatever he had moved on to. It's like the toy is saying, "Um, excuse me! We're not done playing yet here!"
This is further exacerbated by the fact that you can't turn it off quietly. So if you want the thing to stop making noise, you either wait for it to shut itself down (tricky, because it may turn on again the next time you walk close to it) or turn it off yourself. Either way, it will say, "Bye bye!" and strum a chord.
Ultimately, fewer bells and whistles would have made this a superior toy.
Customer Review: Don't waste your money Summary: 2 Stars
I always research most items before I decide to purchase, and found this drum to have a good rating here before I bought this drum for my 1yr old daughter for Christmas. I found out that this toy is really very low-budget and not at all on pace with the quality of learning toys on the market these days. The bad: Top of drum has a very cheesy display of letters and pictures. The batteries were dead on arrival. The drum hardly does anything, and barely holds my daughter's interest for more than a minute or so. The good: This does seem to be a tough toy that can take many drops. That is all that is good. I was so sad because I was at Goodwill and they had not just one, but TWO of these drums on their toy shelf for 99 cents a piece. Definitely a rip off to buy at full price. There are so many other great learning toys out there, don't bother with this one.
Customer Review: Repetitive fun that gets my baby dancing Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this as a double set with the LeapFrog Learn & Groove Counting Maracas when my daughter was 8 months old. She didn't seem really interested in them until she was about 10 months old and now (she is 11 months old) she basically wants the drum on all the time.
She turns it on, bangs a little bit, goes and plays with other toys and when it shuts itself off she realizes that its silent and proceeds to turn it on again. So I think this is amazing for keeping her coming back. She also dances to the music, which has a great beat and gets annoying from repetition but that's what babies love. I highly recommend it and have a feeling it will be really helpful at teaching letters as my daughter gets older.
