Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Leapster and L-Max Recharging System - not for use with Leapster 2Customer Review: Two boxes, same product Summary: 5 Stars
I just bought two of these chargers. I have two kids and two leapsters, so I didn't want to be without a charger for one of the kids. That said, it should be noted that the packaging on the second recharger listed that it was only good for the L-Max. The first box is identical to the one on the Amazon picture. It says it can be used with either handheld, the Leapster or L-Max (but not the original Leapster, which is a different shape.)
So after I got home, I opened both boxes. Both were the same part number and both were able to charge a Leapster. So if you happen across one of these that does not have the packaging that says you can use it in a Leapster (that is, only advertises that it's for an L-Max), please note that they are the same product and can be used interchangebly.
PS - Note that Amazon requires I give these ratings, but in truth, my kids have yet to receive these from Santa, so I can't honestly speak to the educational value, durability or fun. Looks good, though. I bought two.
Well, it's been nearly a year since Santa brought my little ones their Leapsters with the recharger. I can't say enough about how wonderful the charger has been. I don't have to worry about batteries. I just put the Leapsters in the recharger once every week or two for 2-4 hours and my little guys are happy again. I could use the plug that came with the recharger, but my guys like to use their Leapsters mostly in the car.
I suppose if you have rechargable batteries in the house and 4 extra floating around to dedicate to a Leapster, you don't need this recharger, but for me, it's meant one less thing to worry about.
Today, we just bought the Leap Frog ear phones which fit in the Leapster, as well as the Tag and Diji. I'm looking forward to not hearing fights over who's game is too loud in the car.
Customer Review: No more tears! Summary: 5 Stars
My 2 & 5 year old love the leapfrog leapster! with that said, the batteries we go through are non-stop. We tried recharable batteries but I don't like the idea of my youngestest even being around batteries and their compartments that can easily be opened by a 5 year old. We love the charger! It took 3 hours for the light to stop blinking the first use and it lasted him non-stop holiday travel play for 3 days. It only takes a few hours to be on charge, which is normally done after his bedtime and now I no longer need to nag about them leaving the system on since there are no batteries to waste) The stock battery charger that hold 4 batteries is replaced by a similar shaped cartiridge that includes the charging system sealed inside. It's simply replacing one for the other. Store the old carparment with the batteries on a shelf for "emergency" situations (power outages, ect) As for toughness, I have to admit the leapfrog company holds true to its products. Unfortunetely the unit had been dropped a few times, and with that abuse, there has been no affect on the charger. There is a green light that flashes when being charged, and when it registers a full charge, the green light remains steady. easy to handle, easy to use and much more easier on your wallet. Used for the Green leapster and the L-Max models only. The box says it will hold 300 charges before battery life becomes less and then you will need to charge it more frequentley. 300 charges - Even if we went to the dollar store to purchase batteries, it still saves us hundreds of dollars - not to mention time & gas - and the best piece of mind, it will prevent a sad eyed little boy that just came to me saying his batteries died again when he was so close to finishing the race. Happy Playing!
Customer Review: Large Enough To Not Misplace, Yet Small Enough To Carry Easily Summary: 5 Stars
Bought the re-charging system at the same time that I bought my son the Leapster L-Max. Some sort of recharging system, either rechargable batteries or this docking station is a MUST if your child is going to use the Leapster very often because it sucks up battery juice VERY quickly.
I had considered buying rechargeable batteries of my own, but like how the docking station doesn't require any other "small" parts such as batteries which can be easily lost or misplaced. A bit pricey, but in my opinion worth the cost in the long run. I liked the fact that it was a larger-sized docking station, no small parts/batteries to lose, but was worried that it might be a little *too* large to store in the leapster storage backpack that I also purchased, but it all fit in the backpack nicely. A definite must-have for a child that uses their L-Max quite a bit- saves tons of money on regular batteries that need replaced constantly. Leapster L-Max didn't come with any sort of A/C Adapter to plug directly into the wall (which we also thought was somewhat of a rip-off) but this docking station's A/C adapter can be plugged directly into your Leapster L-Max for that purpose.
Customer Review: Product is great, Amazon's price is NOT! Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this charger directly from Leapfrog for around $30 in January '09. (This was not a clearance price.) I do not understand why Amazon's prices have become so inflated in the past few months. This is absolutely not worth the $99 that it is now listed for from Amazon. I do highly recommend the charger. It has worked well and taken the hassle out of having to replace or recharge batteries that must be removed from the Leapster. You just set the whole Leapster unit on the charger and a light indicates that it is set on correctly. My son knows to put his Leapster on the charger each night so it is always ready to go with a fully charged battery. (Although he has never run the battery all the way down yet anyway.) I wouldn't want to deal with the batteries on the Leapster otherwise. Buy this product elsewhere though, unless the folks at Amazon get their heads out of their butts with their overinflated prices.
Customer Review: Easy to use!! Summary: 5 Stars
I give this 5 stars because:
1. we always know where the L-max is ~on the recharging dock!! before we got this recharging system the kids would never put the leapster away =(
2. the kids can put it on the dock themselves where as they cannot change the batteries themselves.
3. Never worry about the batteries going dead, this charge lasts all day.
We tried using rechargeable batteries and it was just a pain to have to switch them out at the end of the day. I have way too much to do, worrying about batteries is the last thing on my mind. Just set it on the charging dock and leave it. when the green light is solid its fully charged, even my 2 year old knows that we need to put the leapster on the charger when his sister is done playing.
When we get our son his own leapster we will be buying another recharging system for it.
