Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Leapster Learning Game System - PinkCustomer Review: Love It! Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter received this over a year ago and she still plays with it often. When she first got it, she wouldn't let it go, even when she slept. My husband accidentally stepped on it and broke off the point of the pen, which made my daughter stop playing it for a while. After a few months, I re-introduced it to her and showed her that even though the point of the pen was missing, the pen still worked, (or she could use her finger). It's great in the car and sometimes I pull it out at a restaurant when she's antsy and won't behave. (Luckily, you can lower the volume under these circumstances.) It's wonderful for toddlers, they feel grown up and like seeing their favorite characters like Dora & Nemo. My mom bought my daughter the new TV Game Console for Christmas which seemed a little too advanced for her (she's only three) but she can play the game that came with the Console in her leapster with no problem. So far she has about 6 games and I'm buying another one today. I do wish I were able to replace the broken pen though.
Customer Review: Lovin' the Leapster! Summary: 4 Stars
Santa brought the Leapster this Christmas and boy, was it a big hit!! He also brought a DS for my son, who insists on playing his sister's Leapster! Being on a one salary budget, I had to find this on sale. Luckily,Amazon had this on reduced sale price before the holidays. Over the holiday sales, I did purchase a plug-in adaptor/recharger on sale (usually at ToysRUs) as I knew the batteries were not going to last long.
The games are educational..and a bit expensive, but work as a good manipulator for school homework. Pre or post Christmas sales usually find the games on mark down.
As far as durability goes...well it has been played by all the neighborhood kids (seven of them..aged 4-8 yrs)as they took turns swapping toys for the night and has been left in the car when the weather was six degrees...and it's still going strong.
My only peeve about this is that it can't be good for my kids eyes staring at this tiny picture for long periods...so I do restrict game time for that reason.
Customer Review: Well loved by the whole family! Summary: 5 Stars
We love the leapster. I was hesitant when I bought this and I reviewed and reviewed it. It seems like a lot of money, but for us it was money well spent! We bought it originally for my 4 year old, who took right to it and plays with it everyday. My 2 year old in the past few months has laid claim to it and they now fight over it constantly! She can work the more simple games and really enjoys her time with her sisters leapster. It is great for in the car and the stroller and even when he baby is napping. My 2 year old is getting her own for Christmas. It is really durable, every time it hits the floor I shudder with fear of the damage, but so far so good!! The games are pretty educational, but definitely entertaining. They are pretty expensive though in my opinion. We will have a small fortune in the games and systems after this Christmas I am afraid! My kids are super active and hardly sit still for 10 minutes out of a day, so when they found the Leapster so great, so did I!!
Customer Review: Huge Disappointment, Durability Issues Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased two leapsters for my children for Christmas. Overall the games are great. The main drawbacks are the cost of use and durability.
I bought two recharging kits to save on batteries. You must do this as regular batteries won't last long. Then there is the expense of the games, usually $25 for one game. Having said that, I still thought it was worth it for the entertainment and learning it provides my kids... until today. My daughter's leapster inexplicably stopped working today. I had registered both leapsters, but when I went to check the warranty, I found out they only had 3 month warranties. It seems they only make these things to last for three months, which is not acceptable.
I am very disappointed in this leapster. Protect yourself, and your child, and purchase learning games with a better warranty. For the amount of investment we are putting into these things, we deserve something that will last a year or more.
Customer Review: lemons and non-lemons Summary: 3 Stars
I bought two Leapsters for my four and five year old children. My five year old has limited English and is very rough on this toy, but it has held up well. However, my four year old's Leapster stopped working within two weeks. We sent it back to the company for a replacement, and the stylus stopped working on the replacement in less than two weeks. She has not been rough on the toy and has barely had a chance to play with it much to her disappointment because it was her biggest birthday gift. I have considered just replacing it and biting the cost again, but when 2 out 3 haven't even lasted two weeks, I am not willing to fork another [...] out for this product. It tooks weeks of e-mails back and forth to replace the first one. Granted, I lost the receipt - had never had trouble with Leapster before, but I made it clear from the start that we wanted it for a long drive to our vacation destination - it was not replaced on time.
