Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Leapster Learning Game System - Pink

Customer Review: Educational Video Game fun
Summary: 4 Stars

My son has the green one of these. He got it after surgery when he was in a cast from waist to ankle and didn't have much to do about three months ago. He had just turned four.

He loves the drawing game that came built-in and has learned to do the Frogger-type game (also built-in) pretty well.

He has a few of the cartridges and his favorite is the Thomas & Friends game. He can do most of those games well now. All the games are reasonably priced and seem to have at least two difficulty levels in each game.

He can't pull cartridges out yet but is able to put them in. Sometimes he doesn't get it in all the way and needs a little help, but he'll probably figure it out soon.

I refuse to get a dvd player in our car, but this is something I will allow. He always asks to go back to the house if he forgets to bring it in the car. It is not a toy he plays with a lot in the house - he'd rather be moving than sitting (thank the Lord!), but he does sometimes.

I think the string for the stylus could be a little longer, but it is adequate. The plastic cover that protects the screen when it's not in use is hard for my son to clip onto the front, but it's easy for an adult. Again, he'll probably figure it out eventually.

The batteries seem to last a long time - we've only had to change them after three months of moderate use.

The screen is pretty small, but my son doesn't seem to care or notice. I appreciate that the whole thing is small, so we can toss it my purse when we're heading out the door. The buttons all seem easy enough for him to push.

I have do admit, both my husband and I have played with it to see how it works. We approve!

Customer Review: A lot of fun for the five year old
Summary: 5 Stars

First - the first one I got didn't work. Very disappointing for the five year old in question, but these things happen. I didn't mark the rating down as a result - I comment on it only so that if a pattern emerges you have that information

Second - it doesn't come with a lot of games. She was tired of the games it came with about two hours later. On the other hand, being five, part of the thrill of having a birthday is all of the new stuff... two weeks later she continues to play those same games quite enthusiastically and they seem to be the appropriate degree of difficulty.

Third - if you are buying a leapster for a girl, get this one. It probably sounds silly to everyone else out there, but it really made it special. Her brothers and parents were convinced she didn't need this because her brother had graduated from his to a DS, so his red one was available. Aside from the fact that older brothers tend to maintain control over everything they ever give their younger siblings I thought the pink and purple was cool. When the first one didn't work out I was instructed to please get another one that works and "make sure it's pink and purple".

Fourth - it doesn't come with a charger of any sort. I think this is indicated in the description, but I'm just pointing it out so that you're not taken by surprise. I got her rechargable batteries for it instead which seemed to work. (They now have rechargeables that come charged for those of you who are giving this as a gift to be used immediately. This adds about $20 to the total gift cost.)

All in all it was a very popular gift.

Customer Review: Super electronic option for the age group its intended for
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the pink and green Leapsters for my son and daughter when they were four and five. They got a few great years of enjoying the game system before moving on to a different option for older children. It was a great size and great for long trips in the car. The Leapster case should be more available because it was so handy in helping to keep games with the Leapster and making it all easy to tote along with the child.

My children were able to enjoy several games because I ordered them used online which helped to make the option more affordable. If you are buying each game separately I think it just costs far too much when you add up all of the options together.

At first I was worried that the stylus would break off since the children would sometimes carry it by the stylus. However, through all the abuse the styles remained in tact. After a few years of plenty of use the green one eventually stopped reading cartridges well and the pink one continued working. I doubt that that has anything to do with color but more because of who had the system to play with. :)

One thing I wish I would have done differently is to have purchased and AC Adapter to go with it. I thought I could use rechargeable batteries with it and you can't. So, added to the cost of the system, the case and the games was a whole lot of AA batteries. Four at a time. Ikes! The charger would have been a smart move.

Overall, I am very pleased with the selection of games and entertainment and am glad my children had this option especially on a few long road trips we took.

Customer Review: BATTERY SUCKING PIECE OF JUNK!
Summary: 1 Stars

The company suggests using alkaline batteries (not longer lasting lithium). The downside to that is that this device will run for a couple days (so mere hours of play time) on alkaline batteries and then die. We've had ours for about 18-20 mos., and it doesn't work at all with batteries despite trying to "clean" the battery area. Lest you think we treat the thing poorly, that couldn't be further from the truth. My daughter is not snacking and drinking while using the Leapster. She's not dropping it on concrete floors. When she's done, it promptly goes back into a zipped up backback, along with the games, so it's kept dust free. The Leapster is in pristine condition. But does it work? Only with the AC Adapter, which means we can't take it anywhere with us. Leap Frog has managed to hood wink me into purchasing a Leapster and an L-Max, BOTH of which have the same problem (both of our devices LOOK in great condition and were taken excellent care of - way beyond what any company would expect from a consumer, so the problem isn't with us, but with the low longevity of the Leapster product.) The company does not stand behind this product and probably knows it's flaws (thus the 90 day warranty). If I could do it all over again, I'd buy a Nintendo DS or something that might actually turn on and stand up to some play time. Ugh. I'll never buy Leap Frog products again.

Customer Review: awesome learning toy
Summary: 5 Stars

I wanted to buy the older style leapster but this new style was the only one...the other one was "sold out" at every site I went to and I live overseas so I can't just go to WALMART or Target....so I bought this Pink (Rectangular) leapster for my 6 year old and she loves it!! (so do I)
I bought the older (triangle) stlye for my 4 year old son.

If you are like me I had a hard time deciding which one I should buy...the new one or the older one. I can't really say one is better then the other. They both have pros and cons.

Pros/Cons for the Rectangular style...

the back can be opened with a coin which is nice for travel. (I fly to the states a lot..14 hours is a long time)

it is a lot smaller in size and easier for little hands to play.

BUT with the smaller size comes a smaller screen. Which is the only con for me. (my daughter didn't even seem to notice)

The only Cons for me on the older style would be the pen and the back. You have to use screwdriver to open it....so while travling it can be hard to change batteries.

Which ever one you buy you and your child will love it!!!

The games are all awesome....My children really like the Kindergarten and 1st grade games, Dora and SpongeBob!!
Hope this is helpful.
