Customer Review: BUY THIS WHEN THEY ARE YOUNG
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a good investment. Buy it when they are young. My two year old loves it as much as the four year old. Neither one has any problem navigating through the games. The one it comes with has several games fun for toddlers and tweenies. We also own Finding Nemo which is better than any of the Leap Pad books. The biggest problem is the cost of the cartridges. The system was a gift for my four year old but the games cost 24.99 each and while they are great I don't think they offer enough on each cartridge to be worth that kind of money.

My daughter LOVES hers, she can sit for hours and while it might not be the best thing for her it certainly is better than her watchinf TV. Highly educational, the games target many areas even at that young age: problem solving, math skills, reading, spelling, logic... I love it. Best system for a child yet. Forget the V-Smile- this has wonderful graphics, excellent sound and is portable. Also, using the pen to touch the screen allows for deeper interaction, rather than just pushing a button. If they want a video system get the game cube or better yet dig out your old NES and head to a used video game store and pick up Sesame Street's 123/ Ernies MAgic Shapes, Sesame Street's ABC/ Ernies Big Splash, Big Birds Hide and Seek, and Donkey Kong Math. These are really simple to use and NO better than the VSMILE- just a lot cheaper. So, BUY the LEAPSTER it proves itself to have advanced technology, educational value, appeal and entertainment. All the rest are just new versions of old classics like the atari 2600 and NES.

Customer Review: Best $$ ever spent-just bought 2nd

I wouldn't be able to praise this toy enough. We gave it to our oldest daughter last Christmas when she was 3 1/2. We were concerned because of the price but compared to a GameBoy we prefered the educational aspect. We have never regreted the purchase. She loves playing with it and has even mastered basic math skills well ahead of time. We had a problem with the screen not responding after about 6 months but it only took a quick email to Leap Frog and they replaced it with our only expense being a few dollars to ship it to them. They have excellent Customer Service. We would have even invested the money to buy a new unit if they hadn't replaced it.

We have just purchased a unit for our 19 month old daughter because she always wants to share big sister's. I know the age is 4-10 but our little one just loves the characters and even though she doesn't totally understand what to do, she still loves playing. It has helped her to master control of the stylus and she is now much better at coloring too. We have a few extra cartridges and plan on expanding for Christmas.

We haven't had a problem with battery consumption. This toy definitely hasn't eaten batteries nearly as quickly as others and my older daughter plays with it almost every day. She would play with it more if I would allow it. But we still plan on buying the recharging system too.

I highly recommend the investment in the carrying case also.

You just can't go wrong with this toy.

Customer Review: Just what I wanted to get for my children!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was so happy to discover this Leapster! I had bought the Power Touch for my 5 year old son. Then, I was back in Target and I noticed the Leapster. I thought, "WoW" just what he would love, but then I noticed the price, "Yikes!". I went home and stewed about it. I looked on the internet and read all the great reviews from Amazon and it just confirmed my decision that this was the perfect educational toy for him and his 3 year old younger brother. I realized that I had to return that Power Touch as he would probably get bored with it and the pages get ruined, besides it being bulky. (My daughter has Leap Pad and barely plays with it.) Then I grabbed the Leapster, the Dora cartridge and SpongeBob cartridge.

Well, I gave it to him early and he loves it. Not only him but his 7 year old sister took it and didn't want to give it back to him. She has Game Boy Advance and I truly believe that this toy is superior. The children can play games and learn at the same time! On top of that there are 3 different levels so it can be challanging for older kids too. My children really like the cartridge that came with it too. The size is nice, head phone jack a necessity. There's also a volume control and light control. The screen is very big. The colors are nice and bright. I am very impressed with the thought that went into making this. I hope they come out with more advanced software for older kids too. I'll have to find the carrying bag and charger.

You will not be disappointed with this purchase! It is worth the cost.

Customer Review: Great alternative to video games; great learning tool
Summary: 5 Stars

My son loves his "gameboy" as he calls it. We got it for him last Christmas, at 3 1/2, because he loves anything electronic. He only has 4 cartridges so far, but he alternates between them and enjoys playing the leapster original games (without any cartridge.) There is a rabbit river game where you can learn numbers, letters, and shapes, as well as a drawing program where you can "paint" or add shapes/animals that move and make sounds to different backgrounds. He has learned a lot about identifying numbers, letters, addition, and clocks/time with his Cars and Thomas the Train cartridges. He enjoys the Scooby and Spiderman ones, too, although they are a little above his level of learning (he just plays for fun). He has dropped this thing A LOT on hard floor, and besides a few scratches, it seems to work just fine. The batteries (4 AA) last a pretty good while. He can play it seems non-stop for weeks before the batteries run low. My ONLY complaint is (esp. compared to gameboy), this toy is a little big and a little heavy. Actually, I like the screen (color and graphics) better than the gameboy styles, and it's nice the volume can be adjusted on a pretty wide range. It seems easy for a even a 4 year old to hold with two hands in their lap, but it's a little bulky and heavy to just taking around. Overall, we have gotten (and are still getting) a lot of use out of this. I like that my son can learn while he is having fun with the variety of games from each cartridge, and even the programs that come standard on the leapster.

Customer Review: WOW!

First Impressions
***** Good Build Quality--looks and feels rugid w/great screen protector
***** MUCH better screen than I imagined possible
***** Loud, clear speaker
***** Responsive Interface
*** Mediocre Ergonomics?--directional button-pad position not the best for little hands to quickly find, but should be fine for slower, more thoughtful work <this isn't a button masher anyway>
????? Software <get back to ya' on that>

Just gave one to my nephew for his birthday(obviously didn't buy it here thanks to the NY premiere--grumble), and he loves it.

Leepfrog must be losing money on these! I'd expect the screen alone to cost more than I paid. Compared to PocketPCs and gameboys, the screen is massive--Looks like 4"x4". It's well lit w/decent color and resolution. Only viewed indoors (it was getting dark out) so will report back on daylight use.

My 5 year old nephew found the power button and volume immediately, and was thrilled that the thing just took him by the hand and 'told' him what to do next. Very cool...

Only annoyance so far is the battery compartment--Requires a screw driver to open. Guess they want to move those recharge base stations, which for 20-30 bucks will be worth every penny(i'm sure this bad-boy is gonna eat batteries like tic tacs).

If LeapFrog put as much love(ok, effort) into the software and they did the hardware, this thing is gonna totally rock the rug rats. My nephew's in K4 and his sister's in 1st grade--I'll update soon with their takes on it(software).
