Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog® Leapster® Learning Game System - GreenCustomer Review: When it works, its fantastic .... Summary: 2 Stars
We purchased this Leapster as a gift for my 3 year old daughter, not sure if she would really be able to use it yet or not. She immediately became hooked, and we felt it was a great learning tool. The game actually kept her mind busy with challenges at different levels. She especially loved the "Shape Shop" and other matching games. Things were going great. And then the problems started .... the screen would not respond to the pen in one place after another. Leapfrog customer service would walk us through the recalibration process, just to have it "uncalibrate" a day or two later. My daughter became very frustrated each time we would try to play the game, and we finally ended up getting approved for a replacement Leapster. We received the replacement from Leapfrog after paying to ship them back the original toy, not what I would expect after paying $80 + $50 in extra software. When the 2nd Leapster arrived, my daughter was overjoyed to have her favorite toy back! And then, the next day the same problems started again. The replacement Leapster took less than 24 hours to completely lose response to the stylus. To put it mildly, we are less than overjoyed. A LOT less than happy. My daughter was in tears after the 2nd Leapster stopped working, and she is not a child that is prone to crying. Better yet - it broke at the *beginning* of a 4 hour car trip, making for a lovely drive. We are now waiting for our 3rd Leapster, hopefully the 3rd try will be a charm. Especially since we just bought six software titles, a carrying case, and the recharging station so that we would have it for our trip. And it's no picnic for my daughter having excitement turn into tears over and over again. In the end, it's a great product if they could just work out the bugs! Huge thumbs down for quality.
Customer Review: An amazingly educational toy that kids love to play with Summary: 5 Stars
This was an afterthought for Christmas - we had most of what my 4 year old son would get for Christmas already bought or picked out. We checked it out and I told my husband we should get it - it could be like his "gameboy" and yet he would learn.I never knew he would learn so much. Every day he comes up with something new that comes out of this game. It is truely amazing - and a great toy that is very portable and educational too. We take it everywhere - and when it is time for him to half to sit because his older siblings are participating in a sport or other event - he is very well behaved and quiet. We bought a set of small ear phones to go along. At age 4 he is easily able to play the 1st grade games - and the doodle game is great also as he is learning to write. He is spelling now, identifying shapes, colors, and mixing colors, writing and drawing letters and shapes. He does not go to school for another year and a half - and he will be more then ready - Hopefully the teachers will be ready too!! I absolutely can not wait for the docking station to come out. I willingly buy batteries and carry a screw driver and a spare set in my purse at all times. The game has a truely amazing screen and picture - and I find my older children asking to play too, it is great for car rides at night. Our first trip home from visiting relatives - my son looked like an owl trying to stay awake playing his game. Friends and family are amazed by the game, and have bought one for their children/ grandchildren from watching him play his game. I bowled a great game at the lanes the other night - and the crowd went wild - and there is my son head emersed in his game, oblivious to what was going on around him!!! I would definately recommend it, and buy the games for older age groups.
Customer Review: An excellent alternative to GameBoy for the elementary set Summary: 5 Stars
My son got this for his sixth birthday this year. Six months later, despite tons of use, it is still in pristine condition, works perfectly, and he still plays with it on a regular basis. We got the First Grade and the SpongeBob games and later we got the art one. We've just ordered the Math Game and the Junie B. Jones game. We could not be happier with this toy!The entire system is really designed with children in mind. The games all feature favorite cartoon characters, fun games, and bright, colorful graphics. The size of the machine is really comfortable for little hands to hold, and they brilliantly stuck the pen on the system with a string. (I know my son's would have been long lost by now otherwise.) The screen, which delivers very high quality graphics, is protected by a thick plastic flap when not in use and has remained intact despite being dropped countless times. The controls are user friendly and child-sized as well. My son has fine motor delays, and this toy has helped him with that, especially in writing and drawing. The games all hold his attention and he can literally play for hours if allowed to. My only complaint for this system is that there just aren't enough software titles for it right now, but that's bound to improve, but this is an excellent alternative to GameBoys and other hand-held game systems which do nothing but engage your children mindlessly and aimlessly. With this system, your child will learn things, be engaged, and be entertained at the same time. We have gotten our money's worth several times over, and we plan to buy more games as they're released. This is probably the most fun and most useful toy I've ever bought my child, and I would recommend it to any parent of Pre-k to 2nd grade children without hesitation.
Customer Review: Leapster now contains marketing and has removed learning activities Summary: 1 Stars
Our first son is just entering kindergarten this year. His Leapster, purchased 2 years ago in 2004, was absolutely WONDERFUL. But as our second son has come along and requested the same item I am very disgusted with the product. The original Leapsters did NOT include an area for advertisements. There were the following activities, which both boys thoroughly enjoyed; "Rabbit River" Alphabet recognition, Number recognition, Spelling, Basic Math (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division); "The Chicken Coop" Alphabet recognition, Number recognition, Memorization, Color recognition, Shape recognition; "The Color Coral" for artistic creativity; "The Shape Shop" Shape building (placing shapes in an area to create pictures provided with or without shape borders), Plus a "Birdy Bonanza" where the kids get a special treat once they have collected "25 seeds." NOW, the only items included are "Rabbit River", "The Color Coral", and one little thing that I'm absolutely ANNOYED with. Ingeniusly they have added marketing to the Leapster to look like an option for playing and learning. It is actually an option that was not previously on the Leapster and is completely infuriating. This is where they give a little advertisement of each of the currently available Leapster cartridges. To me this is just plain low. To take a young child's toy and subject them to this advertisement is uncouth. I for one am completely outraged but cannot do more than write this and write the company, especially now that my son is completely attached to his NEW Leapster and it's differeing color from his brother's.
I do not appreciate Leap Frog making sure that our young children are taught not just their ABCs but how the adult world around them opperates with advertisements.
Customer Review: You won't believe this one! Summary: 5 Stars
We played with the Leapster before giving it to our 6 year old son and fell in love with it like all the other parents. He was a little jealous of his brother's new Gameboy but after playing with his leapster for a while, he disappeared. He played with it all day Christmas day and the day after. Because it gives you hints, he didn't have to find a "grownup" or sibling to help him. (which we ALL love about it). He brought it to me several times to show me "his score" or how smart he was. I was SOOO impressed. THEN...two days after Christmas I'm taking laundry out of the washing machine and putting it in the dryer when I hear this distinct "CLUNK" sound that gets my attention. I dig through the wet laundry and isolate the noise to a pair of my 6 year olds pants...as I feel through the fabric, my heart sinks like a stone. And sure enough, I shake out into my hand the two game cartridges that we bought with the Leapster. I'm just heartbroken for my son. After paying the considerable price for the toy (which is worth every single cent by the way)there is no way we can afford to replace those games now. I toss them onto the kitchen table and try to decide how to tell him they are ruined. Then, on a hunch, I get the blow dryer. I shake them and dry them and shake them and while doing so realize (again) the unrelenting quality of LeapFrog items. They look well sealed...maybe...just maybe. After 5 minutes of drying time, I hesitantly insert one cartridge into the Leapster. With the same happy jingle, it springs to life just like always! BOTH cartridges survived the washing machine! I'm sold. And my little boy's Christmas vacation will remain perfect in his memory. Way to go Leap Frog! It's everything they said it would be...and machine washable....go figure!!
