Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog® Leapster® Learning Game System - GreenCustomer Review: Don't think about it, buy it! Summary: 5 Stars
We bought this for our 5-year-old daughter for Christmas last year. She loves it! She is learning so much and she is having fun doing it. When she picked up the Leapster for the very first time I thought that I would have to help her navigate her way through the games. Nope...it was so easy for her to do it herself.
We also bought the recharging kit because I had read reviews about this thing sucking up battery life. We charged a completely dead battery yesterday morning for a couple of hours and after hours of playing time (road trip included), it's still running strong. I also love the fact that she can use headphones with it. It helps on the long ride to Nana and Grampa's house when Mommy and Daddy want to listen to the radio.
We haven't had a problem with the screen scratching. I did explain to her that she needs to put the cover on after she's done playing or the screen could get scratched.
My 3-year-old son enjoys watching her play with her Leapster that he will often sit next to her and watch her play. He has become so fascinated with it that I actually ordered one (the green triangular version) for him today from Amazon for $39.99 (I paid $54.99 for my daughter's). I know that he is too young to understand the concept so I may keep it until Christmas.
The reason I ordered the triangular version for my son instead of the new square version is because of the larger screen and I had read in some of the reviews that there are now commercials in the new Leapster (???). Anyways, I know he likes my daughter's triangular Leapster, so I know he'll like this one.
Don't think about buying this, just buy it. It's so much better than buying a Gameboy. Your child will be constantly learning and he/she will have fun doing it. There are so many different software titles in the Leapster library that your child will never get bored.
Customer Review: One of the Best Purchases I've Ever Made Summary: 4 Stars
I bought the Leapster for my 1st grader's 6th birthday. He has played it every day since August. He struggled quite a bit in Kindergarten and this year, he's leaps and bounds ahead of the game. My preschooler is adamant about me purchasing one for him as well. My 8 year old daughter also wants one for herself. I also enjoy playing on it myself. All the cartidges are so engrossing, my 1st grader especially loves the arcade style games and ISpy - that's his favorite. We're slowly building his library, but at $20-30 a pop, it gets expensive. The whole family is enjoying this item, I swear by LeapFrog products, and this is easily the most beneficial electronic product I've ever purchased.
I was reluctant to purchase the L-Max because I couldn't see giving a 6 year old a $100 device. I kinda wish I had now, because the screen is brighter, although the regular leapster he has does a really good job in all types of light. I would like to invest in a rechargable battery system because I'm putting 4 new AA batteries in about once a month. The battery life is surpisingly very, very good. After doing the math, buying batteries in bulk isn't an expensive endeavor, the rechargable unit costs about the same or more than the Leapster itself.
With this greared towards young elementary school kids, it should be a bit more rugged, ours has been dropped, a lot, but still runs like a champ. Everytime I hear it hit the floor, I think it's broken and get a sinking feeling. A rubber exterior or optional cover would be awesome. My son takes his everywhere and it gets kicked around quite a bit. There is evidence of damage to a battery in the battery area.
Overall - hands down, this product has garnered the most immediate results and is the best electronic, educational product I've ever purchased!!! Kudos to LeapFrog - keep up the AWESOME work!!!
Customer Review: This has been a hit! Summary: 5 Stars
Thanksgiving day was also my son's 5th birthday. Since I knew we'd be cooking most of the day, we went ahead and gave him this as his birthday gift along with the SpongeBob cartridge. I hoped it would keep him entertained while we were busy. And it worked! He got My First LeapPad two Christmas' ago & it was seldom played with it. The pages seemed to slip around too much to hold his interest. Because of that, we never moved up to the regular LeapPad. But this one is great. The graphics are top notch and every program (even SpongeBob) is completely educational. There are three skill levels for each activity so he's not blown through them like he usually does on computer games. According to the material with it, it has the technology which allows it to modify according to the child's ability. Some of the games use the attached pen, others use the directional buttons. The game clearly explains what to do and how to do it. There's even a "hint" button if the child gets stuck. The games are fun enough with enough "button" action to hold his attention and not just feel like..."Here's another educational game Mom wants me to play." To him, it's more like a GameBoy (which we've been holding off on) and less like a test. It was the first thing he picked up this morning--even before turning on the TV for Power Rangers! I've already ordered several of the other cartridges available and I understand that soon there will be read-along stories and even special movies for it. I'm sure the jack for headphones will be much appreciated then! Oh, as a note... Since our guy never really got into the original LeapPad, he's not been as impressed with the program that comes with it. That uses the standard characters from LeapPad & he's just not that taken with them. For him, he'll be much more likely to play with SB & then Dora when he gets that one.
Customer Review: Most fun and educational toy ever Summary: 5 Stars
This is the first toy I've ever felt compelled to write a review for. Three days ago, we bought the Leapster for our daughter, who will be 3 1/2 next month. We incorrectly thought that we were buying a toy that she'd grow into. It's not at all out of her range. We've purchased all the educational toys - the LeapPad and all the books, the Imagination Desk, the Laptop, the Pixter, etc., but nothing compares to this. Unlike the other educational toys, we found that our child doesn't need to be encouraged to play with this. It's reminiscent of 80s video games.Working this toy is largely intuitive. After sitting with my daughter and her Leapster for an hour, she was able to navigate her way through the games and utilize all the buttons. The parent guide simply explains what skills your child is learning. We ran out right away and purchased the Dora and Kindergarten cartridges, as well as the carrying case. The cartridge that comes with it is great. The Kindergarten cartridge is phenomenal. It's challenging and addictive. Kids earn points in the different games to buy monster parts, then assemble a monster and make him dance. The game, Funhouse, on the cartridge, challenges kids to collect letters, displaying two at a time, to correctly compose a three letter word. Within two days, I saw her letter recognition go from 1/2 (random) to 3/4. This morning she asked if she "could make the phone go". I called out numbers and she dialed correctly. We're thrilled. My daughter's a Dora fan, so we picked up that cartridge, too. It's cute, but it's too easy for her. She played for a half hour and abandoned it for the Kindergarten cartridge. It would be a great one to start with for a smaller child. The case is the only thing I wouldn't recommend. Much like the other Leap Frog cases, I think that the design is poor.
Customer Review: Our Daughter Can't Get Enough Summary: 5 Stars
OK, let me start by saying our daughter can't get enough of the Leap products. They are great tools for play and learning.
We gave a Leapster to her for Christmas and she can't play with it enough. She absolutely loves it. She's 3 (4 in April) and the age group is for 4 year olds but she still is learning. There are a few things she does have a hard time with and mainly it's on the Sponge Bob cartridge, counting money is not her forte as of yet. The colors and graphics are great. I especially Loooove the volume control. The concept is pretty much the same from the other Leap products so it was easy for her to acclimate herself with this new "Video Game". My only complaint is how quickly it goes through batteries. Looks like we will have to purchase her the recharging system! No complaints, money well spent.
Moms, you know when you know your child is up to no good? The silence that permeates through the house? When the hair stands up on the back of your neck because you know your little one is now painting your expensive makeup on their little faces for clown tryouts? You search for them and find them knee deep in tissue paper or something equally ridiculous? Well, we had a moment like that just yesterday. She was silent....too silent. Walking right past her room, I couldn't find her. When I realized she was actually in her room and quietly playing her Leapster I was thrilled. I asked her what she was doing and she proudly told me she was playing her game.
Her counting skills have improved so much because of the Leapster. Next we are purchasing the Draw & Write cartridge. So far she has no interest in learning how to write her letters, I think with the cartridge she won't mind so much. Yup, it was a good investment. Get one for your children now.
