Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog® Leapster® Learning Game System - GreenCustomer Review: Best ever electronic toy! Summary: 5 Stars
We purchased a Leapster for Christmas last year for our then four-year old. They were sold out everywhere and we ended up purchasing like the last one on-line so don't wait too late if you are considering one this year. She absolutely loved it then, loved it all year, and still loves it! Of course, we went on to purchase just about all the game selections they offered for it, appropriate for her age, and they are all great! She has learned so much from using it and its been wonderful to take along on trips in the car. It has been dropped over and over again, and our two year old loves it even more than the four year old. At first, we thought he wasn't old enough for it but it seemed to be able to handle the physical abuse of a toddler, so we eased up. Then to our surprise we found out he knew the entire alphabet, and even every letter's sound!!! He learned this from watching the "Letter Factory". We went out and purchased the "Talking Word Factory" to see if he would learn lower case letters and start making words. He did! It is absolutely amazing that a product could teach a just-turned two-year old this much! What ever they are doing, they are doing it right! The only problem we have now is deciding which child gets to use it. Most of the time the two-year old get so upset when it is taken away so we decided to purchase another one for the four-year old. We are getting a pink Leapster and that way they will be able to tell them apart! We are definately looking forward to being a two-Leapster family!
Customer Review: A good investment! Summary: 5 Stars
We got the Leapster for our then three year olds birthday (last March). He is about to turn four and still loves this as much as the day he first received it. The educational value is wonderful. He watched me play games on my Nintendo DS and will get his Leapster out and sit next to me and play and is very content to be playing his. The games are fun but at the same time many are very educational. Some have "movies" (like Letter Factory) that you can watch as well. Some of the games are quite difficult for him to master yet and he can get frustrated but overall he's able to play almost anything with little problems. His favorite games right now are Dora, Letter Factory, Draw & Write (b/c he likes the drawing thing and the maze game) and Cars which he just got for Christmas.
He has dropped the game so many times and his little brother who will be two has thrown it (I don't recommend this, however, it is electronic after all... but so far it has held up marvelously.
I'm really happy with this purchase and plan to buy my 2 year old his own next year for his birthday when he's three.
Out of all the other options that I checked out including Pixter and V-smile pocket, this was the best and I'm very happy with my choice! I have a friend who has the v-smile and says she likes it but if she didn't have so much money invested in the games from the v-smile console she would have went with a Leapster.
Hope this quick review helps someone with their decision!
Customer Review: Wish there were more stars! Summary: 5 Stars
I debated so much about purchasing this for my daughters. I read all the great reviews and that along with my prior experience with LeapFrog told me to go ahead so I bought 2 Leapsters for my girls Christmas. They are aged 4 and 6. I also bought the charging stations...VERY worth it. They have played with them in the car, waiting rooms, during a very BORING meeting they had to attend with us (earbuds used), and at night before bed. We took them to Christmas dinner at my parent's home and my teenage sister spent about 30 minutes playing with it!(Only stopping when my daughter freaked out) Just the leapster alone has many activities. When you add the cartridges to it, you have unlimited potential. They have been dropped, carried by the pen, and otherwise abused by my 15 month old. They are tough obviously as usually toys don't last long here. (6 kids) We havent yet purchased the cases but plan to. I use a small backpack to carry them in. We have Dora, Princesses, Junie B Jones and the second grade cartridges. Princesses get the most usage. The one thing to note about the charging package....to use the rechargeable batteries you must change out the back of the unit. We have the PINK Leapster so now the back is GRAY. But the rechargeable system is AWESOME. We took them on a day long trip and one was left in the car for a couple of days and the battery was still able to play for hours. If you have been trying to decide....trust me, they are very cool. Usually the toys my girls get are shoved aside after a week.
Customer Review: Great tool for kids. Summary: 3 Stars
Just picked one of these up for my 7 yr old. Great idea for a learning tool. Keep in mind that the age is 4-8 so the shortcomings of the screen should be accepted by that age group. For parents: the screen is big, but the display is old technology.. uneven lighting, very bad ghosting (unacceptable for 2004), washed out colors and grainy graphics with loss of detail depending on the size of the images on screen.. Dont expect anywhere near Game Boy clarity and you will be Ok. That being said.. the age group should be happy with it, but those with GameBoy Advance SPs may notice the extreme difference in quality, and be unimpressed - so be warned, as some kids are pretty tech savvy. The overall presentation and learning thought seems well researched, and the way the learning activities are arranged feels logical to a child. Of note: the cartridges have 5 to 6 mini games on them. Unusually small amount in my opinion..esp considering the amount of stored data on a LeapPad cartridge. This may improve over time, but for now the standard is 5 to 6 games. Durability is very good and the machine could probably accept a few good drops by children - although (this I took off a point for) the cartridge sticks up well above the machine, unlike the GameBoy Advance.. a good drop on the cartridge would damage the machine. Other than that, as an educational tool it is well thought out and of great potential. Recommended for 4-8, but don't expect too much of the display and you will be happy.
Customer Review: first interactive leapfrog product Summary: 5 Stars
Although they are very popular, my wife and I are not fans of the leapfrog product line. We are both child psychologists, and we also have two young girls. I am also a gadget nut. Our overwhelming experience has been that the leapfrog products do not allow children to engage them creatively or interactively. Instead, they talk, buzz, beep, sing, and do all sorts of electronic wizadry AT you, rather than with you. Because of this, children get bored with them very quickly and do not gain much by way of the experience. The Leapster is decidedly different. The games are interactive, reasonably intuitive, have educational value, and require the child to think, plan, act, and learn to proceed. However, while they are educational, they are no replacement for interacting with an adult for learning. That being said, they are a world better than staring at ye old boob tube (something, by the way, I am not opposed to with children- children need down time too- provided the viewing content is age appropriate). Our 4 1/2 year old daughter plays with the Leapster for an hour or two at a stretch, just the other day lying in bed and playing quietly in lieu of a nap- sometimes, quiet play time is enough to recharge a young child. More impressively, our 41/2 year old allows our 20 month old girl to lay next to her and watch the action. Bonus!! Quiet time, with physical closeness, for two otherwise very very very active children. Great product. Really, a home run by leapfrog.
