Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Leapster Learning Game Pet PalsCustomer Review: Excellent game Summary: 5 Stars
Of all the Leapster cartridges, this one is one of my children's favorites. It has probably gotten the most playtime between my 6yo and 4yo.
UPDATE:
This has got to be one of my children's all time favorite Leapster games. We've had it for about two years or so. My 5 and 7 year olds still play it, though the 7 year old is outgrowing it and moving on to Didj. They never get bored of it.
I will detail the game play below but as a quick summary, it teaches the following skills:
- letter and recognition (walk the dog)
- counting (pet the dog, costume contest, trick time)
- addition (play and fetch competition)
- reading (walk the dog)
- writing (letter walk)
- fine motor skills (trick time, letter walk)
- how to following instructions (wash the dog)
I recommend the game for preschoolers, but young elementary students will enjoy it, as well.
ENTRYWAY:
Doggie Dress-up: Exactly as it says. The child may choose different shoes, hats, glasses, shirts, pants for their dog.
Shopping: Using doggie dollars collected during the game, shop for supplies or clothing.
Dog Show: Four rounds of competition using games the child has learned: wash dog, costume contest, tricks, letter walk (child writes letters by tracing lines).
Walk the Dog: Take the dog for a walk to let it go to the bathroom. Level 1: Find a letter amongst the letters and numbers scattered in the street. Blast the numbers out of the way with a bark. Level 2: The player is instructed to walk to either the capital or lower case letter on the street. Level 3: Walk to the correct three letter word on the street.
Trick Time: Choose a trick. To perform the trick, tap the dog's head the required number of times. Then, trace the pen from the green dot to the red dot. Teaches counting and fine motor skills.
KITCHEN:
Bath Time: Use the shower head, shampoo and towel in the correct order to wash the dog. Teaches kids to remember a series of instructions. This process takes longer than I have patience for, but the kids don't mind it at all.
Sometimes, the child must feed the dog or give it water or pet it a required number of times.
LIVING ROOM:
Play and Fetch Competition: Throw the frisbee to the number that is announced. Level 1: features single digit numbers. Level 2: features two digit numbers. Level 3: features addition of single digit numbers.
Letter Walk: Trace the lines from the green dot to the red dot to form letters.
Customer Review: My daughter's favorite game! Summary: 5 Stars
My older daughter is almost 6 and received this along with 5 other Leapster games and the Leapster 2 for Christmas. So, we've had this game for 3 months and it is by far her favorite game to play. She dabbles with the others - Go Diego Go, Dora's Camping, Disney Fairies, Ni Hao Kai-Lan, and Star Wars Reading - listed in order of preference. But she always goes back to this one. She loves Littlest Pet Shop toys and it reminds her of them. But, I think this one is far more educational than LPS games on DS or Wii.
I could see her playing this game regularly for at least another year as she better grasps the concepts - for example, she knows/finds the capital letters, but doesn't bother to bark the lower case letters away first, while on walks. She loves dressing the dogs up (aka - doggie dress-up) - actually that's the one part of the game her little sister who's 2.5 loves and is able to do too. It seems to have a fair amount of direction following, which is a valuable lesson to be taught, especially by a cheerful narrator to whom my daughter readily listens. She was so proud when she finally got 1st place at the dog show! And it motivated her to get more trophies and ribbons - by following the directions for the bath and doggie dress-up, and tracing letters.
All-in-all this game has definitely been a great game for our child and I highly recommend it, especially if your child likes animals, dogs, or Littlest Pet Shop toys.
Customer Review: My kids love Pet Pals Summary: 5 Stars
My boys (3 and 4.5 years old) have had their Leapster for 6 months. They liked playing with the original software that came installed (especially Color Corral), and the Cars cartridge that they received with the Leapster.
However, after I bought them the Pet Pals cartridge, it is like a whole new fascination with the system. They absolutely love taking care of their puppies and keep careful track of their "Puppy Points" and dollars earned. The puppy rewards them for "taking care of it", but you can also win money by getting coins during a bonus round after you walk it (by identifying letters and words), and by playing frisbee with your dog (identifying numbers and later answers to addition problems).
I agree with the previous reviewer that there are so many options that it is hard for the kids to get bored of this game. Plus, the collection of puppy points is a big motivator. Before playing this, my four-year old resisted writing activities. But, with this game, the writing is disguised as "teaching your dog to walk letters", and he is much more confident in writing.
We had the same problem printing out the adoption certificate, but a couple of week ago, LeapFrog fixed this problem. My boys now have their adoption certificates proudly hanging on their wall.
Customer Review: Cute Game! Wish they restocked the store! Summary: 4 Stars
This was the 4th leapster game I gave my 5 yr old; she loved it at first. Played it ALL the time. I was even addicted to it. Unfortunatly, like most games, once you play a long time and master the skills asked...there is little left to do. The biggest drawback on this one is there is a store you can go to, to buy items for your dog after you earn coins throughout the game...well, my daughter went and bought out all the items as soon as she had the money to do so...then kept going back to the store and realized, they don't restock. So then she stocked up on like 50 bottles of shampoo, water, and dog food :) Cute, but then she got really frustrated that the screen was really useless at that point and really never needs to go there again.
These dogs do everything, including "Potty Time"! Its a really cute game, just wish there were more upgrades, or updates you could download for it to keep the interest in it going. It drives our cats crazy when my daughter plays it near them b/c the dogs bark all the time, they sound so real!
I would recommend this game; with the knowledge, they will bore of it....eventually...however, I have yet to find a game my daughter doesn't bore of after a few weeks of play.
Customer Review: My daughters favorite game!! Summary: 4 Stars
We have several Leapster games and this is by far the favorite between my two girls. I got it for my oldest (5yrs) last summer, who straight out of the box took a little longer to figure out then her other games, but we were on a roadtrip and by the time I could have helped her she had figured it out. My 3 1/2 year old is even enchanted for quite a while and she doesn't know her letters, but can still manuver it somehow. I'm actually considering getting a second game so they can both play it at the same time. My girls are not huge gaming fans but I keep the Leapster in the car and it definately does the trick to entertain them on long rides or sitting in an office somewhere. I think it's a great educational toy with enough fun involved to keep them interested.
