Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Leapster Learning Game Mr. Pencil's Learn to Draw and WriteCustomer Review: save paper get the draw and write Summary: 5 Stars
Upon opening the box my six year old grabbed it out of my hand. I was feeling sick and went to be early. I woke at 8:30p with the instructions for her to turn it off at 9p. Lapsing in and out of consciousness, I saw that she was still on it at 9:20 but I was too medicated to say anything(don't worry dh was home). I woke again at 10:30 and took it from her with instructions for her to go to bed. This being a holiday weekend things have been pretty lax around the house. It's currently Sunday and she's been playing with the thing off and on all day. I would recommend this game for two reasons. 1. It is educational by teaching primary colors and which primary colors make secondary colors. She says her favorite part of this game is being able to color the pictures. 2. Having a 6 year old daughter who likes to color and write can easily kill a couple of trees, so saving on paperwaste was my ulterior motive.
Customer Review: For the artiste in your kid. Summary: 4 Stars
My kids like this game more for the picture drawing than the letter writing. Compared to coloring and drawing, there weren't many letter writing activities anyway. In fact, there is only one letter writing activity included. I tried it myself and found it boring to wait for the letter to be drawn and then write the letters. For letter writing, I like the princess Leapster game that has the child trace the footsteps to form letters.
The coloring is fun. There are so many color and draw activities. Many of them teach color mixing. My son learned how to draw a few things like a dog and cat from the drawing exercises. There are also lessons in drawing depth/shading and making flip books. The kids get lots of practice using their fine motor skills on this game. I really think this is best marketed as a pre-writing game or art skills game than a writing game.
Customer Review: Finally a fun way to practice her skills!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Where was Mr. Pencil when I was a child? I bought this cartridge for my four year old daughter who has been practicing writing her letters for about a year now. I have bought her many different kinds of practice books and writing paper only to find that she quickly tires of them. Mr. Pencil keeps her attention by making writing and drawing a fun interactive experience. She loves tracing her letters and numbers with Mr. Pencil. She finds it very easy to complete each task successfully. I feel the customers who have been having problems tracing the letters and numbers must have defective cartridges. I considered not buying Mr. Pencil because of the negative reviews stating the problems of the letter tracing program. I would just like to say I'm glad I purchased it. Mr. Pencil's Learn to Draw and Write is one of Leapster's best.
Customer Review: Mr. Pencil's Draw and Write Summary: 4 Stars
My 5 yr. old son loves the mazes, but doesn't do too much more with it. BUT, my son doesn't like to draw and write, either. So, it might be a better toy/game for other kids. I thought this might encourage him to draw/write. The mazes are fun for him and one has to stay in the lines to complete the puzzle, so that's good. Other than that I can't tell you too much about it. He's played here and there with it; of course he prefers his more adventurous games like Go Diego Go! and Batman and Cars, but that's "how he rolls" - lol! That's what he tells me anyway.
I gave it 4 stars b/c I'm not 100% about it, but I do know that Leapster games have really taught my son things and keep his interest. I don't think you can go wrong with this one. My son and I revisit this "game" on occasion and I don't hear complaints.
Customer Review: Mr. Pencil is strict! Summary: 4 Stars
My 4 year old son loves his leapster and enjoys playing Mr. Pencil. It can cause considerable frustration however. Mr. Pencil expects alot of accuracy when tracing lines. Perhaps more accuracy than the somewhat crude Leapster touch screen can really provide.
We have found that adults have trouble meeting Mr. Pencil's standards at times. Try the Maze game for example...
Don't get me wrong, the Leapster is a great toy, and Mr. Pencil is worth the money. I advise parents to help their kids to avoid the frustration that stops learning in it's tracks. I joke with my son that Mr. Pencil is a bit "cranky" about accuracy and that we need to try and keep him quiet. By making fun of Mr. Pencil a bit we avoid frustration.
Nothing wrong with a challenge huh?
