Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog® Leapster L-Max® Game: Letters on the Loose

Customer Review: An Awesome Educational Tool!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This cartridge is a fun and an excellent learning tool. This particular cartridge focuses on Leapfrog's DVDs, then you should know that "Letters on the Loose" builds upon those experiences. Tad and the gang aren't here, but Professor Quigley is and he directs the action.

My son is entranced by the games. I have to say this one is his favorite!!! He loves the letter hunting and writing game. Even though he learned his letters and how to spell and write his letters early, this still helps him get BETTER at it.

He also likes the bonus game on the TV. Professor Quigley puts on a robotized suit and shoots through a vertical maze. You are told to gather either capital or lower case letters. It's fun but requires quick decision making. At first he wasn't too quick but now he zooms through it!!

The Letter Learning Game teaches uppercase and lowercase letters, their sounds, and it allows children to practice their letter writing. What's great is the catchy tunes. My son sings A says aaaa, B says bbbb...which has helped him join letters together to spell words. I must admit, it drives me nuts at times but he's so proud of himself that he knows this.

My son does get frustrated while tracing the letters and numbers. If it is not within the perfected lines, it makes you do it all over again. I know it forces the child to be more precise, so it's not really a complaint. His handwriting has improved somewhat.

The only thing that we are not crazy about and doesn't make sense is that when the LMAX is connected to the TV you have to use the button on the pen to make the pen work. Without the TV you just have to touch the pen to the screen to enter a choice. My almost 4 year old son had difficulty at first but now he has the concept.

I would suggest you adding this to your Leapster Library...it is a great educational toy. My son loves it, what else can I say!!!

Customer Review: It's REALLY no fun
Summary: 1 Stars

Santa brought us Letters on the Loose, and after playing with it I had to tell my little one that Santa made a huge mistake with this game. It is NOOOOOO fun. Santa thought you could chase letters and pick them out of groups etc. but it's not like that at all. There's a few times of picking out the letter of interest from three letters, after you do this 3 - 4 times the game forces you to copy the letter you're working on by presenting dashed lines. It is at this point that the game sucks big time. It wants you to trace the lines exactly - there's no smart fit software in there to give a little kid credit for the right kind of shape - if she's not perfectly dead on with her tracing it keeps telling you to do it again, and not in a kind sounding encouraging way. It sounds pretty darned critical. My daughter is not easily frustrated, and this got her down. I tried the tracing part, and it gave ME an attitude! Otherwise I don't find the alphabet creatively or compellingly presented. I have not bothered to write many reviews in my life, but this game drove me to it. Don't buy it unless your child is already in like second grade and has really high self esteem. It's like Leap Frog had the World's most boring unfun sadistic teachers design this one.

Customer Review: This game wouldn't work for me
Summary: 1 Stars

We had our Leapster L-Max about 2 weeks when we got this title for Christmas. From the beginning it was a problem. Part of one of the games is to practice writing your letters. It will draw two points marking the beginning and end of a letter, with dotted lines in between. For some reason on this portion of the game our pen input is not detected, with or without the button pushed on the pen. I thought maybe it was a calibration issue (fyi to calibrate take out the cartridge, turn on the unit, then press Home+Hint+B). At first this solved the issue but my 5 year old messed up on his first attempt to draw a lowercase "j". I dont know if it was wanting him to dot his "j" but after creating the body of the j it asked him to draw a line between 2 dots, and the dots were on top of one another. I tried for 5 minutes and it would not accept my input or let me continue. Again I tried to blame it on the unit and not the game itself but the other games still work fine. Based on the positive reviews I've seen for this game I'm hoping this is fluke and I just got a screwed up copy of the game. I guess tomorrow I'll be on hold waiting for Leapfrog support for a good portion of my day.

Customer Review: My kids favorite
Summary: 5 Stars

My kids love their leapsters. We own almost all the games. At first I thought they would prefer the cartoon games that they have seen on TV. That was not the case. My 4 & 7 yr olds both love Letters on the Loose. I bought it for the 4 yr old but they both fight over it all the time. Another great one that my 7 yr old plays is Math Missions. Also Dora for my younger child. The others are just ok. Not very interesting. Math Missions you earn money to play video games. I highly recommend these games. I wish they would come out with a game to teach states and capitals. I keep their Leapsters in the car so they always have something to do... even if its a 10 min. ride. Keeps them busy in restaurants too. Finally a video games that educates them without even knowing it.
Letters on the Loose - you have to help the letters. Letter A -you need to shut off a alarm. Letter B - The B dances. Letter C - you have to shovel snow and look for the letter C. Letter D - you have to look for a musical instrument that starts with the letter D like drum. Once you find the letter you have to trace it. The kids love it!!!

Customer Review: Excellent Game (+ Work-Around for Younger Child)
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of my son's favorite Leapster cartridges. One "trick" that he discovered is that one can play the games for different letters without having to trace/write any of them. As other reviewers have correctly pointed out the tracing can be too demanding and frustrating, especially for the younger children. This is my son's work-around: After playing the "A" game, press the "Home" button on the Leapster, and then return to the games and one then gets the game for letter "B" just as if one had completed tracing the previous letter. This allows even the younger kids, like my son, who cannot trace well yet to still enjoy this cartridge immensely. There are different games for different letters. The "A" game which unfortunately comes first, is one of the most boring. But later on come some of the really fun ones including: shovelling out the "cold" C's that are stuck under a pile of snow, flying with the F's, vacuuming up the V's, etc. My son sometimes does attempt to trace the letters as well already, but mostly he is not ready for that part of the cartridge yet, and that's ok.
