Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Leapster Carrying Case

Customer Review: Review of the case.
Summary: 5 Stars

I noticed that most reviewers here were writting only about the leapster and not about the case. I waited to buy the case until I could get my hands on it and really check it out to determine whether I thought it was worth the [$$$]. I was very dissappointed in the quality of the case and chose not to buy it. The case is soft and easily bendable or collapsable, not hard, and has a minimal lining. I wouldn't even call it cushioned. The lining is a synthetic material similar to fleece-like what some of my winter coat pockets are lined with. The area which "holds" extra cartridges is simply a mesh pocket with an elastic band "closure". I did like how the case zipped shut. For [$$$] I was expecting a much firmer case, with some dense foam padding to protect the leapster in case of impact. I also thought that the sleeve in which to store back up cartridges was flimsy and not secure-it also should have had a zippered closure and some padding or at least dividers to protect the cartridges. All this being said, the case will probably still appeal to a great number of Leapster owners and will be adequate. I was just hoping for a much better quality case, and thought that for $20 it should have been made better. I will say that I have 2 leapsters that have been heavily used by my 3 & 4 yr old boys for about two months. (My rating stars are for the Leapster itself) I do think they are an amazing teaching toy that is of very high quality. They have worked without any problems. We did call Leap Frog to inquire about using rechargeable batteries and were advised not to. I read in a review that a woman did use them and had no issues. We also have been using rechargeable batteries without issues. I really wish that this case was better made as I think it would make a very handy accessory to keep and tote a valuable Leapster and it's cartridges. We will continue to use a basic plastic storage box we bought for just a few dollars.

Customer Review: Leapster case
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought these cases for my 2 sons after reading all the other reviews carefully. I was pleasantly surprised at how hard the cases are, and also not as disappointed with the velcro closure for the catridges as some other people were. I am disappointed, however, that Leapfrog would make the case, charger, and all other accessories a separate purchase. It is deceiving to gift-buyers to market the Leapster as a game, when the purchase is nowhere near over at that point. Expecting young children to be able to keep up with the games without a proper place to store them is unrealistic. Also, the adult who made the purchase is going to want to protect their investment as well. I think it only makes sense that the case comes with the game in the original purchase. I am also not ready to spend another $40 each for the recharging kit, yet, buying batteries every 4-5 weeks is unappealing as well. Then, immediately after my boys receieved their Leapsters, the Leapster L-Max came out. Now there is en entire set of games on the market that are not compatable with the old systems.
Overall, I have been very happy with the quality and educational value of Leapfrog products. But I think the game systems are a scam, meant to trick consumers into spending more money than they had intended. I am aware that this has been going on with the electronic game systems for many years, but I guess I had mistakenly thought that the pre-school age games were still fairly innocent. What a disappointment!

Customer Review: Satisfied customer
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't believe that we have the same leapster case that other customers have. From reading the reviews I have to wonder if maybe the leapster case was upgraded. I bought the leapster case about two weeks ago and almost did not buy it due to some of the reviews. The first point I want to address is that if you notice the shape of the case you can easily see that it was made to accomodate the leapster with a game inserted. I can honestly say that it will not break the ziper! My daughter's leapster is always stored in the case with a game cartridge on and the fit is perfect. No strugle to zip. Maybe the customer who had the problem with the ziper just had a defective product. The second thing I want to mention is that I dont see how the case is collapsible. Its a hard case, yes if you bend it it will bend, but its not flimsy. Also the pocket to hold the cartridges is not made of a mesh with an elastic band, the velcro keeps the games inside with no problem. I am glad I bought it. Its nice and its made for the leapster. The handle is great for little hands unlike the pixter case that does not have a handle to carry it. My advice is go to a store and examine the case yourself. It may not meet everyone's expectations but it certainly met mine.

Customer Review: very good case for everyday use
Summary: 4 Stars

I feel that this case is very good for what we purchased it to do - hold all our cartridges in one place and prevent the Leapster from getting banged up. It is the perfect size for a 3 to 6 year old to bring along on trips or to their siblings practices. It is small enough that it easily fits in a backpack also.

After I realized I had washed my son's favorite Thomas cartridge in the washing machine (he had put it in his pocket) I knew I had to have a better storage system. This works for us. He also stores his Leapster in the case while the cartridge is still in it all the time and we have never had any problems with the zipper unlike what some of the other reviewers have described - maybe it depends on the model or style of Leapster (we have the newer one that is more rectangular and larger on the bottom). It has proven very durable.

The only thing preventing me from giving this 5 stars is that I do wish the cartridge pocket was slightly more padded, and I do feel it is a little overpriced (seems like it should be closer to the [...] range). However I plan to buy another case for my 4 year old daughter who just got her own Leapster for her birthday. All in all we are very pleased.

Customer Review: You need this if you take your Leapster out of the house!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this for my son after he received a Leapster LMax for Christmas. I looked into the newer Leapster backpack carrier, but chose this instead after hearing some bad reviews on the backpack.

I am extremely pleased with this case.

I had read that some users experienced problems with the case when zipping it up, especially with a cartridge still in the unit. Neither me or my 4 year old have had this problem. He usually zips it with a cartridge in the unit and it works just fine. The zipper has not broke or come apart at all.

The back of the case has storage space for cartridges. It is advertised as holding 6 games, however, my son has jammed in 9 and it still closes and stays closed with the velcro closures. It has not harmed the cartridges having so many shoved in there either.

I would purchase this case again if I ever needed to without any hesitation. If it can hold up to a very active 4 year old who LOVES his LMax and plays every single day and takes it everywhere with him, it is worth the money and five star rating!
