Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog LeapStart® Learning TableCustomer Review: Wonderful Gift! Summary: 5 Stars
We bought this for our 9-month-old daughter for Christmas this year as one of just two toys from us (all the rest were covered by grandparents!). What an excellent choice it was, too! From the moment we put it together, our daughter loved it. She can not yet stand unassisted but will stand against this table for long periods of time while she plays. It has rubber grips on the legs and so does not move much at all on the carpet, so I feel safe leaving her against it while not holding on to her (still sitting close, though). It helps to teach her cause and effect relationships, letters, numbers, colors, and I think will give her a greater appreciation for a variety of music (it plays primarily jazz, but also has some other musical styles). The book in the center has one page only that turns back and forth to change the toy's mode (from singing ABC's and 123's, colors, shapes, etc, to primarily playing songs). Our daughter loves to turn the page back and forth, press, slide, and turn the buttons, and dance to the music while holding on to the toy. Her eyes light up every time we go near the toy, and she wants to play with it so badly she shakes with excitement. She does not yet pull herself to a standing position but we anticipate this toy being the incentive needed to learn. The songs are repetetive and bouncy enough for the baby but pleasant enough to not be annoying to us. And, with the notable exception of the "123" song, they do not necessarily stick in our heads for long periods of time, which is a good thing! It is without a doubt her favorite Christmas gift (and she got a lot of them!) and is a wonderfully entertaining, educational, and durable item that we would highly recommend.
Customer Review: Two defective tables and bad customer service Summary: 1 Stars
In late July of this year I purchased the leapstart learning table for my 6m old baby girl. Within one day the purple lid stopped saying "open/close, Hello/good-bye". I returned it to the store were I purchased the item and got a fisher price table instead.
This christmas my sister was very excited over her present for my now one year old daughter. I didn't have the heart to tell her that I had previously purchased the leapfrog table and returned it. So my daughter recieved the table yet again. She loves playing with the table for a few minutes at a time here and there, it doesn't attract her attention for long. As s he walks bye she will press a button and make it start music and thats about all.
Now, after two weeks the table has a problem. My daughters' favorite part, the turny thing that sings the alphabet, does not work. It wont sing the alphabet or play music.
I contacted leap Frog via phone and retold my story to them. I was told that they are able to replace the item. To which I informed them that I didn't want a replacement. I do not want a third table. I asked if it were possible to recieve and item of equal value or some sort of reimbursment for thier product. To which I was denied. I was told to return the table to wereever it was purchased. This will be a feat in itself since the item was opened out of town, I did not bring the box home and do not have the recipet since it was a gift.
I am very dissapointed with leapfrog. Both with thier customer service and thier product. I don't think I will be purchasing anything from leap frog again and will definitly be warning all my friends both online and in person of my expierince with them.
Customer Review: She picked it for herself Summary: 5 Stars
My wife and mother in law were standing around trying to figure out what Maddie might want for a holiday gift, and Maddie was playing with the leapfrog table, ignoring everything else on display. When they tried to get her to leave, with one of her own, she wouldn't let go of the one in the store. It's got the place of honor in the living room, and so far hasn't lost it's appeal. As with all musical toys, the big thing is how much does the child like the sounds it makes. Our child loves the sounds this one makes. There is a large variety of possible sounds, and some are more or less favorite. The banjo and the piano sounds will get her dancing, so those are clearly good. I hear the drum sounds a lot too. A big thing from a parent point of view is that there is a way to turn the volume on this toy down, and it's loud enough for her to hear while the child plays with it, but no so loud that the banjo tune burns itself into the parent's memory forever. It has a lot of different controls that all move differenly, which encourages some exploration, which is good from a learnign perspective, but it's not terribly challenging, except for the switching modes by turning the page. I'm inclined to think that concept is way over our 13 month old's head, but then I notice that while she plays with the page, it never ends up on the "letters and numbers mode", and I know she likes the music mode better. So maybe she does understand it. The dog doesn't seem inclined to chew on it, so my usual yardstick for durability doesn't apply, here. It seems sturdy enough, but the door for the secret compartment seems a little flimsy.
Customer Review: Best Buy - Can't imagine his first 18 mo. without it! Summary: 5 Stars
Best value! I can't imagine our first 2 years without it! If they get older and start to lost interest, just put it away for a couple of weeks and they will fall in love all over again. This along with the Fisher Price House and Leap Frog Drum are on my must have list. I generally don't review products but I can't say enough about this product - we love it!
1. Great battery life.
2. Ours is in perfect working order after nearly 2 years. My best friend has passed hers along to 2 other families and it's still going strong.
3. Great at 4+ months without the legs to encourage tummy time.
4. Inspires them to start pulling up to a standing position once you put the legs on.
5. Lots of great activity for little fingers.
6. Keeps them busy when you need to get things done.
7. I know a ton of people that have the LF Table and I have never heard of any problems even when it's been through a few rough kids.
This is the best buy for your baby - he will use it a lot and use it forever! We have had his table for almost 2 years (my son was born July 1, 2004)and it still works wonderfully! Brady is very rough with it - he stands on top of it, loves to flip it over, and pounds on it! It has held up and we've never had a problem with it.
My son started playing with this when he was about 4 months (with the legs off) he loved the music and lights. We put the legs on for a friends child who was visiting and within a few days he was cruising!!
Customer Review: Pinches Little Fingers Summary: 2 Stars
My 9 month old LOVES LOVES LOVES this toy. So do I. It's very cute. The "book" in the middle has a "page" that can turn back and forth. It changes the program from educational abcs and 123s to great music.
Only problem... that "page" has hurt my little Preston more than once (when he was 8 months old). He put his fingers under the page and then accidentally pressed down with the other hand to where he was putting a lot of pressure on his little hands that were caught under the page on the other side. I've never heard him scream as much as he did when that happened. Not even with shots.
At the time, the table was on two legs and he was trying to pull up on it while playing with the book. So, we put it on four legs so he couldn't apply pressure like that. Only, he wasn't stable enough at the time to stand up and he and the table kept falling over. Smacked him on the head and he cried over that.
Anyway, put the table away for a month and now at 9 months he's sure on his feet when holding on and he enjoys to play w/o too much trauma.
I think the age rating on this toy is a little off. It's great for babies that can sit. When they start learning how to pull up a little it's dangerous because of little hands getting pinched, but then it's wonderful again for when more sure on their feet.
He loves this toy so much we decided to keep it and be patient to see if he would grow into it. And he did. Just monitor your baby when he's playing. Serious ouchie if that "page" gets 'em
