Customer Review: Great toy with a personality of it's own; very durable, but it has one design flaw!

I bought this toy 2 years ago for my then 6 month old son. My son loved it from the first day that we took it out of the box. He played with it without it's legs on until about 8 months when he started to pull up and cruise. Then we put the legs on and he played with it until he was about 15 months old. He seemed to loose interest in it after that in favor of the more advanced 12-18 month old new toys that he had recently received as gifts over the holidays. The toy was pretty sturdy, but it had a tendency to occastionally tip over and roll as my son got older and played a little more ruff with it. I have the older model that doesn't have the additional points on the legs that add more stability so it appears that Leap Frog may have addressed this problem. The major design flaw in the product is that Leap Frog seems to have forgotten that 6-12 month old babies spit up without warning and without caring what they spit up on. My son spit up on this thing twice. It took me more than 2 hours and a tooth brush to clean it while the stuff was still wet each time. After it was cleaned the first time the table started to act slightly possessed. It would turn on by itself for no reason in the middle of the night from time to time with fresh batteries. The second time, the spit up got down in between the keyboard keys and they never worked right after that. The keys began to stick. Two of the keys acted like they were glued into place; you couldn't push them down unless an adult pounded on the keys with their fist to free them, then they'd work for another few hours so long as baby continued to push the buttons frequently. The thing acted even more possesed after it's second encounter with spit up; turning itself on and singing in the middle of the night even more than before. It got to the point where it had to be turned off before bed. The final blow to this poor toy was when I accidently knocked a 32 ounce cup of water on top of the poor thing. I turned it upsidedown and let it dry out for two weeks before I turned it on again. The thing still worked for another 18 months after that, but it's extremely possesed now. If you aren't using it you must turn it off or the thing will not shut up. I would like to see this toy be made water proof and have a way to easily clean up spit up off of the thing before I will give it 5 stars. This toy for all the abuse it has been through held up like a champ with a few personality quirks that it developed with each attack. My learning table finally died two days ago just as my 5 month old will be growing into it in 2 weeks. This is one toy that didn't make it to be a hand-me-down. I will be replacing it with a new one next pay. We certainly got our money's worth out of the last one. The table has one final personality quirk that is easily fixed with fresh batteries. If the table is low on batteries it will sing to you without warning starting at some very early hour in the middle of the night (prior to any spit up attacks or spills on it). The music on the toy is very varied and has two volume settings. I am a stay at home mom of 2 children and even after listening to this thing sing for 2 years I am not sick of the sounds it makes even though it goes all day, every day.

This is a happy, noisy toy that should amuse most toddlers. Everything that can be touched reacts in some way, from a trombone-playing frog to a book that sings the alphabet. Our favorite is the colored keyboard that sings each color you press. The tabletop can be placed on the floor for those still in the crawling phase, or can sit on the included legs for a sturdy surface and leaning spot for little ones who are new to walking. If there is any fault with the Learning Table, it may be that it has too many features: each element of the table reacts in two different ways, depending on whether it's in Learn Mode or Music Mode. (Modes are switched by flipping the page of the book mounted in the center of the table.) Though this means more fun stuff for kids to hear, the mode concept is not one that they can be expected to understand, and the effect of the toy's inconsistent reactions is likely to be confusion. --David Stoesz
