Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Hug & Learn Baby Tad PlushCustomer Review: an enduring favorite Summary: 5 Stars
Baby Tad is one of my 11 month old daughter's favorite toys, and has been since she got it at around 5 months. She has several interactive musical toys that light up, but baby Tad is the only one that she can cuddle and lay on. She still needs a little help sometimes with the sing along, interactive mode (pushing the small buttons within the time limit takes some coordination), but there is also an instrumental, "nighttime" mode that I can initiate for her to watch and listen to alone for up to six minutes. His voice is sweet, not irritating, and he also has enough variation in songs to keep him from driving parents crazy. She loves this toy so much I took him on the plane with us for a 14 hour flight to visit family, and was VERY glad I did. He was the only thing that soothed her for long stretches of time and kept me and the rest of the passengers sane, and his volume control let me adjust him so no one could hear the music but us. I only have 2 complaints about this toy. 1. He can only be surface washed, though he seems to come clean relatively easily. 2. He cannot be completely turned off without removing the batteries, which is a chore. This means that if any button on him is touched at any time, he starts singing. You can press his foot to shut him off, but he'll keep getting reactivated. This is rarely a problem, though I do have an amusing memory of my 6' 3" husband walking though the airport carrying a duffel bag that was merrily singing "If you're happy and you know it." Leap Frog toys are really some of the best on the market, though my sister's kids have the alphabet version of this toy, and we both agree that Baby Tad is much better. I would definitely recommend this toy, or give it as a gift.
Customer Review: A bedtime favorite! Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter was given Tad when she was 8 months old, and it has been her bedtime companion ever since (she's now almost 16 months). She loves the flashing lights and the music, especially "If You're Happy and You Know It" (Tad also plays "The Itsy Bitsy Spider," "Hickory Dickory Dock," "Twinkle, Twinkle," "Baa Baa Black Sheep," "Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?") The best part? She has a soft, crib-safe toy that she can play with before and after sleeptime, which makes bedtime and naptime much, much easier for us. I know that she's asleep when the music stops, and I know she's awake when I hear Tad talking or singing. I love that you can set the lullabies to play anywhere from 1-6 minutes -- my daughter frequently doesn't make it past the 6th minute! These days she turns on the lullabies for herself.
It's also great for travel -- you can have familiar lullabies for your baby no matter where you are, or something to play with in the car. I've changed the batteries only once since we got Tad nearly 8 months ago -- in my experience, Leapfrog toys are not battery guzzlers, which is surprising, considering how many features their toys have.
My only issue is that she sometimes kicks or hits Tad in her sleep and sets off the music, which occasionally wakes her up, but she has gotten used to it and just goes back to sleep.
This is one toy I wouldn't hesitate to get again!
Customer Review: An adorable, rugged, tuneful delight--My daughter's FAVORITE Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter received Baby Tad when she was 11 months old and right out of the box she **loved** it. It's several months later and she hasn't tired of Tad a bit (and neither has her mommy & daddy--always a good thing). She still squeals with delight every time she sees little Tad and hugs and cuddles him with true love. The songs are great and fun, wonderful to sing along to, bringing a lot of song and joy into our home.
The "kiss" button is a great feature. You push the "kiss" button and it makes a big smooch sound and says "I love you!" My daughter **loves** that.
It sounds like the reviewer below, very unfortunately, got a defective item. Our Baby Tad is still going strong on the first set of batteries, and the buttons and all aspects of the toy's construction seem sturdy, if not downright rugged. Yet he's still soft and cuddly.
The only two modifications I would like to see the manufacturer make on this toy would be: (1) A "peek-a-boo" button. Baby Tad says "peek-a-boo" on his own, but there's no way to control it. A "peek-a-boo" button like the "kiss" button would add an extra wallop of fun to an already great toy. (2) The volume control has only 2 settings: awfully quiet and awfully loud. A third setting between those two would be welcome.
The bottom line is that Baby Tad is a **spectacular** toy, hands down my daughter's favorite.
Customer Review: My son's favorite toy! Summary: 5 Stars
Baby Tad is without a doubt my son's favorite toy. He received it at Christmas (he was 3 months old) and he was fascinated with him. I hesitated buying him, but a lady walking by suggested I get him as her baby loved it.
There are 6 buttons on his belly, each a different song, shape and color. They light up when the music plays and my son was amazed every time. He would try and catch the flickering lights and always laughed so much when I would make Baby Tad dance around.
Baby Tad got me through so many nights. When my son would not go to sleep or would cry, I would put Baby Tad on the night time music and off to sleep he would go. The night time music is classical. I think there are around 5 or 6. The BEST feature is that every time you push the left 'night time' hand, a minute of continuous music is added, up to 6 minutes.
My son is now 9 months old and he still loves Baby Tad and is figuring out how to push the buttons.
One tiny negative is that the buttons are kind of tough for little tiny baby hands to push down.
Oh and the little lips on the side of Baby Tads face is a button that makes him say "I love you" with a kiss noise. So cute!!
The batteries are in his back and are easy to access. You can also change the colume there from low - high setting. There is also an off button on his foot.
To recap, this is an awesome toy well worth every penny.
Customer Review: Baby Tad Gets a Second Chance! Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this toy when I was pregnant and thought it was cute. My mom bought it for my son when he was a newborn, and it sat in its box for a few months. As a young baby, my son had absolutely no interest in the toy, and I found it tiresome to keep having to push the toy's buttons for him while he stared at me like I was a goofball.
Poor Baby Tad was tossed in a toybox and tried occasionally, but again and again, my son seemed to lose interest after Tad sang one song. Tad was very nearly given away, until I was desperate for a naptime soother one day. Tad helped me put my baby to sleep, and then he just kind of stuck around...and finally got noticed.
Suddenly, at 15 months, Tad has become a hit for my son! He claps along and dances with Tad's "daytime" songs, and Tad is essential for bed/nap time, where his soothing "night night" melodies help my active guy to relax and lie down. He's learning to identify Tad's colors and shapes, and which ones produce his favorite songs, especially "Itsy Bitsy Spider".
I think this product is fine for younger babies, but to me, the toy really has play value for older babies. Don't write off Tad for your toddler! As far as quality goes, Tad's played fine for us, despite being pounced on by an enthusiastic boy. Tad is durable, sturdy, and safe. We highly recommend this toy.
