Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Alphabet Set - Styles May VaryCustomer Review: 18 month old plays with them daily Summary: 5 Stars
Now this is a toy that my daughter plays with daily. Whenever she comes into the kitchen, she has a toy to play with - AND it is helping her with letter and sound recognition. It also sings the alphabet - which my daughter loves to "sing" and dance to.
It is a good toy to re-inforce what you should be doing with your child, and makes it fun for them to learn sounds. I really recommed you singing with the music - then they start to understand that you know what the sounds and songs are - and then they will want to mimic it. My only criticism would be that for some of the letters, the audio is not good for the child to hear the sounds correctly (which is my problem with most of the leap frog toys).
Also if your child is very young (under 18 months, they will just take the magnets off the refrigerator, and then a few days later - it is in their bedroom - which is what happened for us). We received this as a gift when our daughter was a little younger, but now she really plays with it. (I only wish I had the spanish version of it now).
Customer Review: My kids learned their ABCs! Summary: 5 Stars
I credit this toy for teaching my kids to sing the alphabet song. When my daughter was just under two, she would push the music button and dance in the kitchen. She would hum the tune not really knowing what it said. Now she can sing her ABCs perfectly. She has moved onto learning the individual letters which is another great task for this toy.
My son knows all of the letters, but he still uses this toy to work on individual letter sounds. He also loves helping his little sister learn her letters. This toy has helped them become closer as siblings.
My only complaint with this toy is that the magnets don't always stay on the fridge. Not always the toy's fault but the magnets could be stronger.
Not only is this a great learning toy, but the best part about it is the switch. Not only does it have the normal volume level, but you can make it quieter or even shut it off. This toy is not extremely annoying, but the repetitiveness can be a little irritating after a while. The switch is the greatest invention for parents!
Customer Review: Great product with real results Summary: 5 Stars
We got this as a gift from a family friend about a year ago for our daughter who's now 3. Over the past year or so she kind of got into the habit of playing with it quite a bit while I cook and then she'd go without touching for a while. I never really pushed it and figured it was something that later on would help. I was astounded the other day when she was playing with it again to hear her signing the entire alphabet! I never worked with her on it at all as I thought that was something we'd work on when she was 3 (she just turned 3 last month) but she beat me to it! As a special bonus I also noticed that all of the sudden she's now signing along with most of the letters. When you have the letter 'M' in for example and you push it a tune plays "Every letter makes a sound and 'M' says 'mmmm'" Educationally this is worth every penny! Something also that's neat about this is that your kids will play with this and then see it tie in later when/if you buy the Leap Frog DVD's (we now own The Talking Word Factory and The Letter Factory which she adores!)
Customer Review: Disappointing Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this for my toddler thinking that it was a nice update to the classic refrigerator magnet letters that were a fond memory from my childhood. Unfortunately, I have been disappointed by this set. It does have a catchy tune that my toddler enjoys and sings, and I think the product basically does what it is intended to do, but I have complaints about the design. First, when I opened it, the unit either incorrectly identified or did not identify at all several of the letters when placed in it. Second, it is too heavy for its magnet and constantly slides off of the refrigerator, making it difficult for my daughter to play with it there. Third, there is no case to hold all of those letters so several were quickly lost. It is true that the letters can stay on the fridge, but since the central unit will not stay put, it makes no since to keep it or the letters there. I think an included case would have been a nice (and reasonable) addition to make this a more portable toy. I say, spend less money and stick with the old-fashioned letters!
Customer Review: teaching basic phonics in a matter of days Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted to share the story of my 3 year old, as it tells how easy it is for kids to pick up phonics with this toy. My older daughter learned reading by following the text when I read to her; so I took it for granted that that my younger one would be able to do the same. Not really -- after weeks of casual drilling at dinner table, my younger one still randomly assigned sounds to letters; she just didn't seem to get it. I was a bit nervous because her learning pattern had been unusual -- she taught herself simple maths at 2, but she couldn't remember her letters till a year later! Looking for alternatives I went and got this toy for her and set it up on the fridge before she came home one day. It caught her eye right away and she played with it non-stop whenever we were in the kitchen. A couple of days later she knew all the simple sounds, and she sounded out "hot" from the faucet when she was washing hands. How proud she was! If there was any worry in me before that she might not be "letter smart", now it is all gone -- thanks to this simple toy.
