Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Alphabet Set - Styles May VaryCustomer Review: All they want to push is the alphabet song button. Summary: 3 Stars
I have twin 20 month olds and I am frusterated that this toy has the alphabet song button and that's all my girls want to push. They don't care to put the letters in and learn them, or their sounds, they just know that button plays a fun song and they do it over and over. The leapfrog caterpillar was the same way, the string on it played the alphabet song and they only pulled that string and never wanted to do the other features and learn colors or letters. I even cut the string to encourage them to play with the other buttons, but they never liked that toy at all. I don't know why Leapfrog insists on putting the alphabet song on their products, when they are meant to be educational. Don't they know that children will find they like pushing that alphabet button, therefor never learning what the toy was intended for? I may have to remove the button so they learn the sounds letters make. I can sing the alphabet song to them, I didn't need this toy for that. I hope as the newness of the song button wears off, they will want to do the letters and find out what they sound like, but now that does not intrest them at all, b/c of the alphabet song button.
Customer Review: Perfect for learning letters.. Summary: 5 Stars
We purchased this toy for my 18 months old and it has been amazing. Each letter sings a little song to identify the sounds each letter makes and already my daughter is starting to identify the sounds with the letters. It also has a red music note button on the front that will sing the entire alphabet from a-z. I think this is a great toy for the little one just beginning to learn their alphabet...For the older children they have another set by Leap Frog for phonics where you can plug in multiple letters at one time..
In reference to the other posts complaining of the letters giving incorrect info, we did not have this problem ours worked perfectly. But after reading this I did look closer at the set and each letter has plastic ridges in different places that lock into the base and small buttons on the base that correspond, so if your child throws the toy or if your toy has cracks in the plastic or pieces missing from defective manufacturing It would most likely explain the incorrect letter recognition by the base. And the buttons could be stuck as well, so I would reccomend inspecting the toy before play to be sure no defects are present.
Customer Review: A Great toy to teach pre-reading skills Summary: 5 Stars
My 4 year old son is autistic and although his speech his fairly good considering, there is a lot that we have to do extra work on. This toy is one of the best that I have found that will 1. reinforce his letters 2. Teach him the sounds of each letter and 3. keep his interest in a productive way.
Yes the song will be repeated over and over again in your mind. However, it will do the same for your child and that will help them learn these reading concepts. I discovered recently that my son could help me sound out basic words. I believe that it was this toy that helped him the most with that skill. The letters are clear and the voice on the toy is also clear and easy to hear. Perhaps a little too loud, but there is no doubt was words and sounds are being pronouced.
As another reviewer mentioned, my son does some repetition with this toy such as excessively pushing a certain button. However, if he keeps pushing the alphabet button, then he will keep hearing it. Overall, this was one of the best toys that I have ever purchased. I highly recommend it for every single toddler.
Customer Review: Terrific for Toddlers Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great toy for the 18+ month olds. The songs are cute. The repetition is memorable ( a bit too memorable for adults). The letter sounds are clear. And the pieces are big enough for little hands to manipulate (and for big hands to find under the sofa). My 20 month old received it for Christmas and loves it. Even my five year old is entertained by it, but I really would not recommend it for children over 3.
The only problem was when we first opened it on Christmas morning. Only the demonstration letter worked. The rest of the letters were off by three letters (resulted in my oldest daughter signing all the letters make sounds except X,Y and Z - to the tune of the ABC song sung by the toy) We returned it to the store and the new one didn't work either, then another, and another. We almost gave up when the store sent an employee to the aisle and went through six toys before we found one that recognized the letters correctly. So my advice is, make sure your toy works right or you will have very confused children. If it is misreading, it is educational, but not in a good way!
Customer Review: Such a good idea! Summary: 5 Stars
I LOVE this little toy! Not for the young ones, who just pull it off the fridge and throw it. So far it's sturdy enough to put up with the battering. I am quite sick of the ABC song, and the voice is a bit grating. But my 11 year old nephew spent 30 minutes listening to and sorting all of the letters. I thought that was weird. But it gave me a chance to do the dishes.
Check the pack for all of the letters when you open it though... my nephew actually discovered I have 3 W's and only one J. (I have the upper and lower-case sets.)
Volume settings are loud and louder. The magnets are powerful enough to stick the letters and the unit firmly but not impossibly onto the fridge.
Even my one year old niece found it hard not to figure out that the letters fit only one way, and the letters are raised enough that she had no trouble gripping them.
Oh, but if you want to use the paper that comes with it, make sure to tape around the entire edge or it will slowly tear with use. Or it will quickly tear when the baby decides to rip it off.
