Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Alphabet Set - Styles May VaryCustomer Review: Best gift ever! Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter received this for her 2nd birthday. It was the best gift she received at her party.
She had already been identifying letters before she got this gift. However, there were two letters she was having trouble saying (like "W"). She now recognizes and says all letters on sight (without being in alphabetical order) and she has even started reading letters in public from left to right (like actual reading).
Not only can she recongnize all her letters, but she has started singing along to this toy. It has boosted her confidence in speaking so much, that she has doubled the words in her vocabulary since receiving this toy (less than 2 months ago). She has also started trying to sing along with every song she hears. After telling me what the letter is, now she tells me what sound the letter makes.
This is by far the best toy in our house. It's the only toy that she plays with EVERYDAY. It is so nice to have something fun and educational to do in the kitchen while I am busy with dinner or other kitchen chores. She also takes the magnetic toy and magnetic letters off the fridge and plays with them in the family room. Shockingly, she also puts it back on the fridge so she knows where to find it when she wants to play (learn) again.
I HIGHLY recommend this educational toy for your baby/toddler. If you are looking for the perfect gift for a little one, this is it!
Customer Review: leapfrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Letter Set Summary: 4 Stars
My son is 3yrs & 8 mths old. Prior to buying these I had the plain magnetic letters on the fridge. Unfortunately, my son played with them mostly when I was busy preparing supper. Because he is still learning his letters he sometimes put the letters upside down and then asked me what letter it was. I found myself having to turn the letter around and then telling him what the letter was. After a while he kept asking me if "this was right" (in other words, was the letter upside down)? He became frustrated with not having the letters in the right direction. With this toy, you can only place the letters in the correct direction. It clearly states what the letter is and cheerfully sings the alphabet song with a push of a button. A BIG PLUS- VOLUME CONTROL. Two draw backs. One is that every letter has a song that is VERY MUCH THE SAME and as with most toys keeping track of all the pieces is a problem. Even though they belong on the refridgerator, we have searched high and low looking for one missing letter many times. Recently our search ended after we finally found the missing letter in the GARBAGE (naturally, not on top). Overall, it is 100% better than the plain letters mainly because EVERY time you place a letter on the device it states the name of the letter and the sound. Also, letter recognition is enhanced because children are not allowed to place the letters in the device upside down.
Customer Review: Great idea, demerits for pronunciation quirks Summary: 3 Stars
This would be a 4 1/2 or 5 star review if there weren't a couple of strange things about this product. Wherever they get the voices, they aren't American. They do a good job for non-Americans, but it sounds like it might be Canadians at best. So a couple of letters are mispronounced. For example, A is pronounced 'eh', W is so weird I can even phonetically capture it - maybe it sounds like doobuhl-yuh - it's bizarre. Sounds petty until the 30th time you've heard it wrong and wonder what the heck they were thinking at quality control! Me and my husband make it say it W repeatedly just for laughs, but it's not great for your kid to hear it over and over. Luckily, as long as your kid has a native English-speaking adult in his/her life, this is not the only place he/she will hear it, so it won't damage them too badly.
The only other complaint is more of a suggestion to Leapfrog. There should be two modes: letter name mode and phonics mode. Since they are inextricably linked, it can be confusing to the little ones (my kid refers to some of the letters by the phonics sounds, not the letter name - due to the Leapfrog Letter Factory video he watches which matches this product minus the mispronunciations) and it'd be a PERFECT product.
As it is, it's the best of breed on the market, but it could use some tweaks with their next version release.
Customer Review: A great toy for it's value Summary: 5 Stars
While shopping one night to keep our nearly 2½ year old daughter occupied we saw this. We couldn't get it out of her hands to put it back on the shelf when we were done, so we bought it. We were not expecting the price to be as reasonable as it was. When we came home we put it on the fridge. Our daughter loves to learn and in no time was telling us "M says Mmmmm" and so on. We do watch Sesame Street too but she is more receptive to talking to this and listening to this since it is a 'toy' in her eyes. I am not sure if because she has known the alphabet for a year now that learning letter sounds is easier or not but I think it is helpful. She can now pretty much tell me what all the letters say. We have another Leap Frog alphabet toy (the tree) that she loves also, as do I. But this one is also winner in my book. The only thing I hate about it is that the volume control is on the front of it where her little fingers always switch it to the louder setting. But hey she is learning her letter sounds. If I only saw this toy sooner I wouldn't have wasted the few dollars I spent on the regular refrigerator magnets that slowly are migrating under the fridge. Oh yeah the letters are huge so they don't go under the fridge and they have also been dropped and thrown (2½ year old tantrum) quite a few times and have not broken.
Customer Review: Great learning Toy!!! Summary: 5 Stars
What else would you expect from leapfrog? This toy is great. I found this at walmart with numbers 1-10 included for my son this Christmas. I opened them and put them on the fridge and he found them there a little while aftwards and started playing with them. At 2yrs old it is really easy for him to manipulate the letters, numbers and buttons. He already loves the ABC song and can sing it quite well, this allows him to hear the song over and over again without me having to sing it.
It kept him occupied trying different letters and numbers, and listening to the ABC song for over an hour today. How great is that?!! This will allow me to cook and clean dishes without popping in a video for him to watch, and it will really help reinforce his learning of the alphabet and numbers. It also teaches the sounds letters make, preparing your child for reading and spelling.
It is just outstanding!! I can't wait until he masters the alphabet and we can move on to the word whammer. Probably by next Christmas. That will be really fun. His 3yr old neighbor has that one, and I played with it the other night!!
A big Yahoo!!! for leapfrog. My only suggestion is to check your local stores for the set that includes the numbers, I think it was $17.00 that I paid, but definantly worth it. It is a shame that Amazon doesn't offer it.
