Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Alphabet Set - Styles May VaryCustomer Review: Yet another postive review! Summary: 4 Stars
We gave this to my daughter for her second birthday a few weeks ago because she LOVED the Fridge Farm, but had outgrown it long before now. (We gave her the new version that also comes with numbers 1-10) She loves this too! My daughter is rather active (not the sit-and-read type) and LOVES to "sing" and "dance" to this. She has already picked up several letters in the alphabet and says them at the right time during the alphabet song. She also is beginning to visually recognize some of the numbers she already knew verbally.
A quick review of how this works: when you put a letter in and press it, a little song tells you what sounds that letter makes. When you put in a number, it tells you the name of the number. When you push the music note button while a letter is in, it sings the entire alphabet song.
One thing I don't like is that the counting "song" stops at the number that is in the machine, unlike the alphabet song which sings in its entirety no matter what letter is in. So if the number '2' is in, the song only counts '1', '2', and stops. My daughter seemed confused by this as well, since she hears the whole alphabet no matter what. So if she wants to count to 10, she has to put in the '10', but she doesn't know which one that is yet.
I also don't like that not all of the phonics sounds are included. For example, the letter 'A' makes three sounds, but they only give two. If you want your child to learn complete phonetics, you'll definitely have to suppliment with one-on-one time (might I suggest the set of 71 Orton Writing Road to Reading phonograms available at riggsinst.org.) It is also very difficult for a recorded voice to teach proper phonetic pronunciation without visual representation (for example the sound for 'V').
Also, some of the sounds technically aren't correct. For example, it says "P says 'puh'" but 'P' doesn't say that, it just says the beginning of that. We don't say 'puh-ink' for the word 'pink'. And it says 'Q' says 'kwuh'. In reality, Q says 'k' and 'QU' says 'kwuh'. In true phonetics, 'Q' is always presented with 'U' and never alone, because no English word uses 'Q' alone (only foreign ones). Also in true phonetics, there are 71 letter combinations to learn (and MANY more sounds) not 26. I guess maybe this is the difference between phonics and phonetics?
