Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog® Explorer Smart Globe

Customer Review: Educationally great. Quality not so great
Summary: 2 Stars

We bought this globe two years ago for my daughter and she loved it! We too enjoyed learning about the countries, capitals and all the other wonderful information it provides. After GENTLY using this product for two years, I have had to replace the pen twice at $5 each including the hassle of getting one and then out of the blue, every country is being incorrectly identified. Sensors have shifted like other users have reported, HOWEVER, because the globe is more than 90 days old, the company now will offer only a replacement globe at half price ($50) plus shipping and handling ($5) AND I have to ship the old one back at my own expense. All of that translates this globe into close to $200, a lot of time and trouble, a disappointed child, and in my opinion poor product quality and service. Buyer beware.

Customer Review: One-and-a-half years laters, it remains a favorite
Summary: 5 Stars

The Explorer Globe is disguised as a toy, but is as much a toy as is a set of encyclopedias. I bought this for my daughter, who is now eight-and-a-half, for her seventh birthday. For the first few weeks, it was the only toy with which she would play. Shortly thereafter, a friend of mine learned about Eureka's country capitals option, and the two had to make schedules for the globe. Luckily, I have the luxury of playing after my daughter is in bed.

My daughter's friends find the music from the other countries very entertaining, and make up dances and "performances" with what they have learned of the other countries.

This item should be in every school. Tomorrow, I am going to buy the new junior edition, which I believe will be equally entertaining and educational.

Customer Review: Geography is fun
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this for my husband because he loves globes and I thought it would be a neat way to learn about he places rather than just knowing city/country names. The only thing is, I end up playing more than him. I love the Free For All game mode. I think the way it works is that it repeats the places it wants you to find, and then every once in a while, introduces a new place that then enters the rotation. So, I'm getting repetition but still get to find new places. I can totally see how this would be a fun learning tool for a kid. The only thing that bothers me sometimes is that the pen will go on the fritz occationally. Either it doesn't select, or it gets overly sensitive. But turning it off and back on again seems to fix it. Overall, a ton of fun!

Customer Review: This highly educational toy is a grand slam in every way.
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this as a last minute extra Christmas gift for my two daughters, ages 8 and 12. The reviews I read here were the primary reason for my impulse purchase. Once they convinced me to give it back and let them try it, the girls played for hours. They have played for hours, every day for the five days since Christmas. I play with it after they go to bed. My 8 year old can touch any continent or ocean on the planet within seconds of hearing its name. The 12 year old has the states and provinces down cold and is moving onto capital cities. Every adult that has entered the house, has been irresistably drawn to play with it. Given the digraceful state of geography education in the country, I can't think of a better supplement to a child's education.

Customer Review: AN EXCELLENT TOY
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great toy, but I don't see why it's age 8 and up. My son got it for his fifth birthday, and I think it is entirely appropriate for a kindergartener. My son knows states, capitals, countries, you name it. He has become a geography champ. I'm glad we did not buy the Junior Globe for him. He has become quite adept at using this one. As for the problems that others have had with the toy being a little delicate and easily broken, yes, I agree, you have to warn your child to be gentle with this toy. My son plays with it on the floor so it does not fall off a table. We did drop it once and it was completely unuseable. My husband was able to fix it though. But my son is careful with it. He loves it and does not want it to break again.
