Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog® Explorer Smart GlobeCustomer Review: Just awesome - a superb way to make geographic study totally FUN! Summary: 5 Stars
Leap Frog's Explorer Smart Globe is a brilliant and fairly simple concept. The pen allows you to click on a feature on the globe and the computer gives you information. The categories of information available - country, capital, state, time zone, currency, music, distance between two points - are all very good. Having the voice pronounce some of those difficult foreign names is helpful - and sometimes hilarious. The genius happens with the quiz games. You can choose category (continents, countries, capitals, mixed) and set degree of difficulty and number of players. The games are a great way to groove that knowledge in. If you have difficulty finding the answer to the question the globe gives you hints!
We had this in the house for a few years while my oldest was 4-6 and it was mainly used for reference and listing to the music of the world. When my son turned 7 this toy really caught fire. He started playing the continents quiz and started to really love it. We organized a team to compete in the geography bee at his elementary school and then this thing emerged as a serious study tool (along with the Internet and Atlases and other study aids). It's a killer study aid and permanent fixture in the center of the dinner table. Grown ups find it irresistible - probably even more than the kids.
Over the years this thing has taken some serious punishment. It has stood up surprisingly well given the relatively low cost and mostly plastic build. Sometimes, in the last few months the pen touches are not recognized - which is remedied by turning the unit on and off (it may just need new batteries). If you hold the globe up on its axis some internal wire doesn't make a connection and the pen touch isn't seen - you have to let the globe sit down on its spindle. The point is that once you put it down it works fine and all this abuse doesn't break it. Battery life is excellent. I think it's had only a single change of batteries in the 3 years we've owned it. All in all this has been an incredibly valuable and educational toy (and continues to be so). IF and when it finally breaks I'm going to go right out and get another on right away.
