Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Discovery Ball

Customer Review: Roll or chase the ball, hear the music, songs or letters!
Summary: 5 Stars

From LeapFrog, this is the toy my 11 months old son loves the most.
* This toy has 2 volume sets: high and low (THANK YOU!).
* When you roll the ball, you can either hear the ABC song or other few melodies.
* If you press any of the letters, you'll hear either its name, how it sounds, or a melody.
* It also shows bright light on both sides of the alphabet, so music, colors, light and motion will capture baby's attention.
* The ball can be attached to the base for the baby's early months or can be detached from the base when the baby is "mobile".
* Sound is crystal clear.
* The materials are solid but soft, just the right texture and has bright colors.
* It helps the baby to recognize the alphabet (by name and by sound) and will enjoy many short melodies as well.
In a nutshell, a MUST buy for the learning baby.

Customer Review: Was a good ball...
Summary: 4 Stars

I liked this ball, note the past tense. It won't make your kid a genius, it just's a fun way to hear the letters. What I really loved was the fact that every letter had a different song in music mode. It was such a great variety.

The only problem I had with the ball, was mainly my fault. It is NOT made for throwing. My son hit the throwing stage and didn't know the difference between this ball and his bouncing ball. So it took enough hits, that something came loose and it doesn't work right anymore. Many of the buttons wouldn't play anything and the rest would play the same thing. We took the ball apart, but the rattling piece was someplace we couldn't unscrew.

So while this is a nice fun ball with lots of different sounds, USE SUPERVISION! It will last a lot longer if you do. I'm considering buying it again for our next child.

Customer Review: great, versatile, educational toy
Summary: 5 Stars

Lots of naysayers reviewing this toy say the buttons are too small and hard to push, but this is really only true for the 6-12 or 14 month range. Our 14 month old got this as a gift at birth, so it took a while before he started to spin it in the base, but now he has started pushing the letters also. Our friends who gave it to us have a daughter who is a year older than our son--she impressed the heck out of us one day knowing where all the songs are on the ball (she was about 20 months at the time)--if you asked her, "play London Bridge" or "play She'll be Coming Round the Mountain" she'd immediately find the right letter and play the song. She also knew how to change modes to switch from alphabet song to the other music. Of course, all kids are different, so some will like this toy and others won't, but I wouldn't give up on it too quickly!

Customer Review: My son loves this toy.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the few "6 month" toys that my son really started actively using at 6 months (or a little before). Most of those toys (at least action ones, not just something to look at or chew on) are a little difficult for an average 6 month old.

This one, however, he has slowly grown into. From randomly batting at it and making it "sing" to now (at 8 months) deliberately spinning it over an over again in it holder. He plays with it every day, sometimes in "alphabet song" mode, and sometimes in music mode. He has not advanced to pushing the letters to hear the letter names, sounds or songs (begining with the letter), but we play them for him sometimes. He has also not advanced to pushing the ball around independently, although I know he will love that when he does.

I would highly recommend this toy to anyone.

Customer Review: Fun and educational...
Summary: 5 Stars

I put this on my son's booster seat tray in its stand and even at 5 months he loves to spin it. His grandfather thinks it is the best toy because of the fact that when the individual letters are pressed it says the letter or phonetically sounds them out depending on the mode its in. My son's grandmother found it on clearance for $7.00 and at that price I would say that it was a steal. Update...my son is now a year old and does not play with this as much as some other toys that he has. The buttons are a bit hard to push for him so I believe that is why he goes for other toys with buttons that are easier to push instead. So unless you get it really cheap like we did then I would pass this up for better Leap Frog toys like the Phonics Bus. I would now give it only 3 or 4 stars but it did not let me update the star rating at this point.
