Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Discovery BallCustomer Review: Doesn't Do Much Summary: 3 Stars
My daughter received this ball as a gift when she was 4 months old, and never played with it until she was about 8 months old. She does occasionally enjoy spinning the ball on its base to hear songs or the ABCs, but I think it will be awhile before she learns to push the buttons. Also, once she grabbed the ball, base and all, while she was rolling around and ended up clunking herself on the head with it. And it is heavy. The ball is useless as far as actually rolling it back and forth. It is too heavy and it isn't an exact orb shape because the strip of letter buttons is flat. I also don't care for the way the ball kicks into song whenever it is barely rolled, even if one of the letter songs just began. I'll wait this one out to see if it is more entertaining for her as she grows. I do like how lights on the ball are in sync with the music, and how it plays so many different songs.
Customer Review: OK BUT BETTER ABC TOYS... Summary: 2 Stars
I got this for my daughter for her first bithrday. She loved it right away & started playing with it still in the box! Well, 2 1/2 weeks later, it is still in the box, because as much as she loves it (I let her play with in her high chair while I prepare dinner), all she can do is spin the ball. The letters were certainly not designed for little hands. My daughter has never had a problem with any buttons before (ex: tv remotes, she can turn the tv on & off, she can turn her other toys on & play with them...), but this one, just frustrates her. I have not yet gone back to BRU or any other store that would carry this toy to see if maybe this is a defect, but unfortunately I am probably going to have to return it. She also received the leapfrog radio & the bus for her b-day which she loves (which all teach the alphabet) ... I must say, that I am dissappointed this time with Leapfrog!
Customer Review: I don't know why, but my son doesn't like this toy... Summary: 2 Stars
It looks like a wonderful toy. My son is two and a half and has had this toy since his first birthday. He doesn't like it. I'm not sure why; he loves the Leapfrog Phonics bus which is similar in concept. He'll play with the Discovery Ball for a few minutes then wander away. The batteries died simply because it was left on pressed up against something -- not from use. I'm hoping someday he'll start enjoying this toy. I have to say I was nearly in tears trying to change the batteries on this toy. Honestly, it's the hardest battery change I've ever gone through in my entire life! And I almost injured myself because there was a lot of prying involved. The diagrams on the toy are so faint and tiny that you can hardly figure out what to do. I will not curse my new nephew by getting him this toy. When he's old enough, I'm getting him the Leapfrog Phonics bus instead!
Customer Review: Great ABC toy! My daughter sings her ABC's at 16 mos! Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter has been playing with this toy since she was 3 months old. I would spin it for her and she would just look and listen for hours on end. At 4 months we would put her in the high chair and place it on the tray. She learned how to spin the ball by herself and for an hour straight I would hear ABCDE..
I never took it off the base or changed the setting to songs and melodies only beacause the ABC song entertained her so well. And now at the age of 17 months, she will still pull it out and sing with it. We (my husband and I and her grandparents) have been singing the alphabet to her everyday since we could remember. With the ball and without it, she can sing them whenever she wants. I thank Leap Frog very much for this.
* I don't suggest taking the ball off the base, if the children don't know it comes apart for them to throw rather than roll, the better.
Customer Review: Fun, Educational Toy Summary: 4 Stars
My daughter received this ball as a gift shortly after she was born. She became interested in it around the age of 5 months--when she could sit relatively easily on her own. She loves to roll the ball in its holder and it is easy for her to do so. We usually keep it on the music for now, but I imagine we'll use the alphabet when she is a little older. I do have one minor complaint about this toy. In music mode, a different song is played each time a letter is pressed. However, if the ball is rolled when the song is playing, it always reverts back to one tune. My baby doesn't know to sit still for the whole song to finish. She doesn't seem to mind, but we never get to listen to all the cute tunes played when the letters are pressed. All in all, this is a good, educational toy that seems quite durable and will likely be enjoyed for several years before it is outgrown.
