Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Clickstart My First ComputerCustomer Review: Great for learning computer skills! Summary: 5 Stars
We gave this to our kids, ages 2 and 3, for Christmas. They both love playing with it. Our 2-yr old son plays mostly the games that come with the system and sticks to the keyboard games. Our 3-yr old also loves the Dora, Nemo, and Animal Art cartridge games. I love Clickstart because they get the opportunity to get comfortable with a QWERTY keyboard, the arrow keys, and using a mouse. Clickstart has games that are specifically targeted at teaching mouse skills. Our older child has gotten better and faster over the past few months playing the paint ball game that came with the system. They also touch on colors, numbers, letters, shapes, opposites, and several other learning concepts. I think this is the best game system we could've gotten for our preschoolers--it's large and easy for them to handle (unlike leapsters) and teaches computer skills. Our kids have stuck to Level 1 games, but our 6-yr old neighbor has played level 2 games and they look pretty difficult. So, I expect this system to last us for 3-5 more years.
Customer Review: Boring for a savvy 4-year old Summary: 3 Stars
I got this for my son when he was about 4. He had been using a computer in preschool, so I thought this would be a good thing to have at home so he wouldn't always want to use the grownups' computers. It was a good toy for the first few weeks, but he got bored with it very quickly. The games were way to easy for him. We would occasionally let him play on-line Disney or PBS kids games on our laptops, and that was way more enjoyable for him. He's really good about handling the computer and not pressing things he's not supposed to, so it works for us. Now I just get different computer games from the library for our laptops for him to play.
This is probably good for a 3 year old or a kid just learning how to use a computer, but if the child has had any other computer experience, it will get boring too fast.
We also got the AC adapter for the control box, but the keyboard/mouse batteries run out really fast. If there's a way to turn off or disconnect the mouse to prevent battery drain, I never found it.
Customer Review: ClickStart is a sorry version of a real computer, even for toddlers! Summary: 2 Stars
I really wanted to like the Clickstart. I was so excited when we first bought it for our 2 year-old. However, the graphics is quite poor and very pixely, like games from the 1980s. The games themselves are also very basic. There are no fun music or dancing characters like most online computer games. We are very disappointed in Leapfrog.
Our son, who loves Starfall, Fisher-Price, and other free online games on our IBM Thinkpad, was far less interested in the Clickstart games. We had bought the Clickstart because we didn't want him playing on our expensive computer regularly, wanted to give him his "own" computer, and wanted him to be able to play it on the TV which has a much bigger screen. Also, he can't use the Trackpoint mouse on our laptop yet, so I thought that Clickstart would be a good way for him to learn the mouse. He was very excited and interested in the beginning, but it failed to capture his attention for long, unlike the online games that he's been enjoying for quite a while now.
Customer Review: The Reinvention of the Atari 2600 Summary: 3 Stars
My 2 1/2 year old enjoys the computer but the games that come with the console are not particularly challenging for her. We bought the Dora the Explorer game along with it and those games are holding her interest because they're more difficult.
I wish the computer keyboard could plug in to our Dell so she could use it on PBSKids.org. I wish this computer could connect to the internet. Aside of better graphics this game console really is just like the Atari I had as a child.
My daughter simply prefers to play online games to the games on this console for the most part so it's a bit disappointing since I'm going to keep having to invest money into this toy to buy more games to keep her interest in it. I have a 1 year old though so I don't mind. I just think the business model isn't particularly good.
Attention LeapFrog! The Internet is the killer app I'm wanting! A hard drive to store games or even a cartridge to store games would be great too.
Customer Review: Love It AND Hate It! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this for my 3 year old. He's always trying to use our computer so I thought this would be great for him. Its very educational and pretty easy. We haven't purchased any of the games yet because the desk top games keep him pretty busy while he tries to master the mouse. Which brings me to my one complaint:
the mouse is hard to use. Sometimes it gets stuck in one place and even I have a hard time moving it--let alone a 3 year old who's trying to learn. Oftentimes he gets frustrated with it. The mousepad is a little too small so we gave him our mousepad to use with it and even w/ that the mouse still gets stuck sometimes. The only real solution is to sit him on the floor and use the mouse on the bare rug and that works better than the Leap Frog mousepad or ours. So strange. This is the only drawback to the toy. They should really think about upgrading/fixing this issue because it is a real deterrent.
But when the mouse isn't giving us trouble its a perfect toy!
