Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Clickstart My First ComputerCustomer Review: Didn't last and customer service didn't care Summary: 1 Stars
Received this as a gift for Christmas 2008, when my daughter was 20 months old. Didn't use it that much and the batteries often died. Daughter is now three and would use it more but the mouse doesn't work. Tried replacing the batteries and re-installing the cord for the mouse but it still doesn't work. LeapFrog customer service said that they couldn't do anything. When I asked (via email) for the supervisor, they said that they had checked with the supervisor and that I could have a 15% discount on a new order. Gimme a break. We have cartriges that we didn't even use yet. I think that this will be my last leapfrog toy. We have the two pens and I was going to buy one for a friend. But, with the books at $13 a pop, I don't want to do any more business with a company that won't stand by its products. We also have the Dora bike, another gift that was bought a while ago and that my daughter is just now starting to use. I like the pens and the bike, andI would have probably liked the ClickStart more now that my daughter is older. Very upset with the company and its service though.LeapFrog Clickstart My First Computer
Customer Review: Not for kids who have used a PC Summary: 3 Stars
I started my son on my home PC at age 2. At 36 months he is now proficient with a mouse & he can independently navigate a website such as PBS Kids. This product was given to us as a Xmas gift. Out of the box it was broken, so I had to do a return.
I liked the idea of getting him off my $1500 laptop. However, he lost interest in this product in 2 days. I purchased the additional Thomas software, but that failed to get him interested.
The problem is that the music, voice & graphics are all very 1980's. At $20 bucks a pop it's hard to believe the games are so lame. Yes, the format is educational, but you can not teach a toddler who has completely lost interest in the subject. You can buy Disney software for your PC for that price that is fantastic. My son has also gotten spoiled with the free game websites such as Noggin where characters are 3 dimensional & there are great audio effects.
However, I believe this would be fantastic for a child who does not have a home PC. The picture is clear. The voice is clear. It will teach them to use a mouse & locate keys on a keyboard. That is why I gave it a few stars. However, due to lack of interest ours is going on an auction site soon :)
Customer Review: Good computer-alernative but mediocre installation instructions Summary: 3 Stars
My 4 year-old got this for Christmas. We followed the installation instructions and got NOTHING on the TV. After reviewing the terse trouble shooting instructions, we narrowed it down to reset for both the console and keyboard. However, there were no instructions on how to reset both the console and the keyboard. I had experience resetting a Palm organizer and knew the deal. So, we used a paper clip to push in the reset button for 10 seconds. Luckily, that worked.
The overall navigation of the games is pretty simple. The main menu contains 4 games and the player can use the mouse to click on each game to play. Before each game, the screen and a voice will announce whether to use the mouse or the keyboard. Players accumulate bones to feed Scout the dog. There are two levels of difficulty to fit a player's skill. Thanks to another reviewer's suggestion, we also bought the AC adapter to save on batteries.
My 4 year-old enjoys this new toy and it does teach him how to use a mouse and keyboard. However, the starter games are quite limited. I am hoping that the cartridges sold separately will be better. It's a good product but nothing exceptional.
Customer Review: LOVE this system Summary: 5 Stars
This toy is a BIG hit at our house. My son just turned 3 and will play with his computer for hours if you let him.
The mouse took about a week to get comfortable with and he needed help clicking on things in the beginning, but one day he turned it on and could do it by himself and hasn't asked for help once since. I love that the keyboard is QWERTY since this is the layout he'll be using the rest of his computing life, but right now he thinks it's just part of the game to find the correct letters.
The built-in games themselves seemed pretty simple at first since he already knew his numbers and letters, but once the computer gauges the child's level it changes the games and asks them to do more difficult things. Right now he is spelling small words, which he was not doing before we got this system. It even pulls the child's name from the profile you set up in the beginning and teaches them to spell it.
I just love that this system grows with the child and will be useful for years to come. Well worth the $60 price! We have not tried any of the other games you can buy to go with it so I can't comment on them yet.
Customer Review: Leapfrog cannot replace defective mouse. Summary: 1 Stars
We thought that if we just used rechargeable batteries, we could avoid all the problems other people had with this product. We thought it would be worth the little incovenience of replacing the batteries often if it was a good game. We even tried it out before we gave it to our son to try to make sure we got a "good" one and we thought we did.
We were wrong. The fact that my son loves this game makes the fact that it doesn't work even worse. How do you explain to a small child they have to stop playing when the mouse freezes right in the middle of the game? After only two weeks, the mouse now freezes up even with fresh batteries. Though Leap Frog's web site says you can buy a replacement mouse, when we called to order, we were told they were on backorder. When we asked how long, they said though they were told 90 days, they aren't sure if that's true. What?!
All they can offer is advice to clean the battery connections with an eraser and their apologies. I wish I'd listened to the negative reviews before we bought. What good is a fun game if it doesn't work and the company can't make it work?
