Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Clickstart My First ComputerCustomer Review: Mom of 3,5 & 7 yr olds Summary: 3 Stars
Bougth this for my 3 yr & 2mth old for Xmas 08. So far, the games that come with the console and the "Art Studio" cartridge we bought, have not engaged her. I'm am looking into buying additional games, but I am somewhat hesitant for the following reasons:
1) Batteries do not last more than 25 minutes of TOTAL play. We have already changed them twice (4 C batteries) and she has only played with it 3 times, for less than 10 minutes. I see that there's and adapter that can be purchased separetely... I am upset that this is not already included with the unit, as it is pretty much useless without it.
2) Very few games (3 max) per cartrdige, [...].
3) Games don't seem that engaging. Granted, we only have the basic ones and the Art Studio, but my daughter already got tired of them in 3 sits. She prefers by far PBSkids.org, which she is currently begging me to let her get on to play.
Perhaps for kids that have never been on a computer, this can probe entertaining, even educational. Maybe because my daughter is familiar with computers already- she browses on her own on PBSkids-, this game is boring to her. Don't know. [...]
Last thing, I would not recommend this for a child over 3 yrs old. It is misleading to say that the games are appropriate for children 3-6 yrs. My 5 yr old boy, was excited about it, tried it, and turned it off. And just so you know, this is the first year they have been exposed to anything other than PBSDkids.org (we bought him the Leapster 2, and he likes it).
Customer Review: My 3 year old loves this computer Summary: 5 Stars
My 3-year old received this for a Christmas gift and began playing with it immediately. We bought the Dora game and the Thomas game as Christmas gifts (and he loves both games) but the preloaded games with the computer are great too.
We wanted to get him his own computer because he was obsessed with ours and I didn't want him banging on the keys. I love that this is a QWERTY keyboard and it has already taught him how to proficiently use a mouse. The games are wonderful and very age appropriate. The graphics on the games are not very high quality by today's standards, but honestly, that does not bother me in the least. The unit is only $60--I knew I wasn't getting HDTV or anything!
The unit is easy to use with any TV set and I LOVE that the keyboard is wireless. We have not had any problems with battery drain on the keyboard, like some other reviewers. We have used this computer daily for the last 2 months and have only changed the batteries in the keyboard one time. It is quite durable, as well. Unfortunately, it has been dropped more than once and suffered no damage.
I do wish the AC Adapter came with the console and I definitely recommend it to everyone. It's only $10 and WELL worth the money.
The games are easy to change, the unit is easy to function and my son can easily manage the whole set up, sit down and play process.
I am very happy with this unit and I have recommended it to several of my friends with preschool aged children. For $60, it is a great toy.
Customer Review: Great toy for pre-schooler Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this toy after Christmas for my 3 1/2 year old, and my only regret is not making this his "Big Santa Present," because it's by far his favorite toy!
The 4 desktop games included have 2 levels. I haven't toyed with the 2nd level of them yet, but my son has already figured out how to navigate the computer, and his mouse skills are improving every day.
A big bonus is the mouse, which can be switched from the right to the left of the computer. He is left-handed, and it's nice to have a toy that is flexible. The QWERTY keyboard is also a plus.
This isn't the most educational toy ever, but it's teaching him basic computer navigation, and reinforcing his number and letter recognition. It also keeps him entertained while I'm taking my online classes, which is worth so much more than it's price tag!
We have not experienced any difficulty with the mouse sticking, except when the batteries were low. I would recommend using rechargeable batteries, they seem to last longer (at least, the digital camera-strength rechargeables do!), and are more cost effective (not to mention better for the planet we are leaving to our children!).
A lot of people have recommended using internet sites or learning software instead, and those are fine solutions, if you can spare your computer, and it can hold up to a child's use. My own desktop computer is slow, and doesn't keep up with the kids games I've bough for it. My laptop, well, it cost too much for me to let my three year old bang on it!
Customer Review: Great toy, one design flaw Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this game for my 2.5 yr old. She is advanced in this area and I felt she would be able to handle this toy even though it says for 3 and up. She is on Level 2 on the built in computer games already.
I think the graphics are perfectly fine. The games teach basic keyboard use, which is great, and my daughter has room to grow with this toy.
My issue with it, to my surprise, has not been mentioned in other reviews and I find it hard to believe I am the only one.
My issue would be the size of the paw print mouse pad. It is rather small. Mousing is hard for a child to learn and she often runs out of space on the pad before she gets there on her own and she doesn't know to pick the mouse up and move it to the center and start again. We took the pad off and she uses the table for the mouse pad which has helped. The mouse isn't the best for a kid to learn on but you can't get better for the price. Anyway, mousing can be exhausting for a child just learning how to use it and half the computer is mousing so she is already limited to half of the computer. I don't want her to get bored with the toy so my problem is finding other cartridges to buy that don't have mostly mousing.
We were given CARS which says QWERTY and mousing but the Level 1 is ALL mouse so she does it for about 10 min with constant help before she moves on to another toy. So this game is not for her yet. I have to find a game that will keep her interested while she gets better with the mouse.
Customer Review: the most fun EVER!! Summary: 5 Stars
i got this for my 3 1/2 yr old little boy for christmas. he loves it so much i can barely get him off it. watch out...it's addicting!! but they also learn a lot of neat skills. the games are VERY educational. it's amazng how good a small child can get with the mouse and hand-eye coordination. all the games are fun. my son laughs so much at the little green puppy in the game, too. it's challenging enough that sometimes he needs help especially when his game is on the 2nd level. last week i went on vacation and at the last second i took the keypad & base along because "you never know".....and it turned out to be a lifesaver on the trip's rainy days, and times when i just wanted some quiet time to myself at the resort. it's so easy to just plug the base into the TV and an outlet...and then set the keyboard across the room from it. my friend and her 2 1/2 yr old daughter were with us on vacation and her little one wanted one so bad..and they are now going out to get one. this was the one "special toy" my son did not have to share on his trip. it's sooo special to him, noone can touch it -except mommy.
it's also durable and very user friendly. i thought i'd have to explain most things to my son, and he just figured everything out on his own because the games give voiced directions as to what to do next, along with pictures of what part of the keypad to use. the keypad is sooo easy for kids to read. anyway, it's awesome. i would highly highly recommend it! i hope you get one!
