Toys and Games Reviews of Fridge Words Magnetic Word BuilderCustomer Review: Great toy once the kinks are worked out... Summary: 4 Stars
My kids got this for Christmas. As some other reviews mentioned, the letter identification was not always correct. My husband discovered that a piece of plastic on the "reader" (the area in which you place your magnetic letter) had gotten jammed down. Once he popped the piece out, it began functioning correctly. For some reason, the letter "M" is not magnetized in our set; it won't stick to the fridge. We are waiting to hear back from LeapFrog on whether or not they can replace that one letter.
On the whole though, it's a great "toy". The kids just love it - my 4 year old and 2 year old both. One thing of interest is that it will not pronounce words that may be considered offensive. One that surprised me was that it will not read "GOD". That's not a problem - but just something I found interesting.
In spite of the few minor problems we've had, I would absolutely buy this product again. I'm hoping to add the Lower Case letters at some point... if we can find the room on our refrigerator for even more Leap Frog products! :-)
Customer Review: What a disappointment Summary: 1 Stars
My four year old daughter opened this toy at her grandparents' home and, because it was Leap Frog, we expected it to work properly. So we threw away the box and returned home with it. We stuck it to the refrigerator and spelled our first word. M....O....M and it said M...O...A! After cleaning the contacts with alcohol and fiddling with it we finally figured out that you have to turn it on and off between each word AND you have to put the last letter of a word in first for it to recognize it correctly. Otherwise, it ALWAYS gets the last letter wrong. The game feature, word hunt, doesn't work at all for us because you have to find the letters in order, and of course our Word Whammer must have the last letter first to recognize it. It's also sliding off of the fridge. We've thrown away the box but we'll have to pull a switcheroo on Wal Mart and buy a new one, replacing the new one for the disfunctioning toy. I only hope that the new one works, because after reading all these reviews about the broken Word Whammers, I've lost faith in Leap Frog.
Customer Review: Disappointed in the Quality Summary: 1 Stars
At first I thought I was the only one to get a dud product. Now I realize that all the battery changes, wire testing and contact cleaning was not a fluke. I bought this online for Christmas and it hasn't worked well since day one. The toy does not recognize letters properly. It simply repeats whatever the first letter that's placed in it. My husband and I discovered that we had to turn it off and on each time we changed the letters or changed the game mode. No little child is going to do all that.
Now, it has started making a strong buzzing noise whenever it is turned on--no matter what the game mode. I thought this toy would be a great value, but now it is just a waste of time and money. NO, I have not sent it back because by the time I got around to it the time had already expired. It would probably be a great toy...if it worked!! All the other Leapfrog products that I have work wonderfully, but something went terribly wrong here. Anyway, I felt that this needed to be said.
Customer Review: Fun for kids, but not super educational Summary: 3 Stars
We got this for my eldest daughter hoping to help her learn her letters and letter sounds. I must say that I'm extremely disappointed in the phonics portion of it (I am a teacher as it happens). It only gives one possible sound when often a letter makes two or more sounds. Additionally, the sounds it claims the letters make are inaccurate and difficult to discern. It consistently adds some type of vowel sound to the ends of consonants. For example, it says that the letter m says "muh" when it should say that the letter m says "mmm." So if you are looking for a toy that will teach your child phonics accurately, this is not that toy. Also, the thing chews through batteries like no one's business. My daughter does love sticking letters on it though and listening to the songs, so for entertainment value I give it a slightly better rating. And in case you were wondering, it will not say anything remotely like a cuss word (not that I tried or anything...).
Customer Review: Good, but spelling words are odd Summary: 3 Stars
Got this for my 2.5 year old. He enjoys putting the letters in and making the words. The problem for me is that some of the words are odd and not words that a 2.5 year old or even a 4 year old would use. Unlike previous reviews, the word "war" doesn't bother me because it is a concept that you can explain to a younger child in words they can get, like war means "fighting". Yet, there are other words that are difficult and neither interesting or explainable to a him, such as "lax" and "dim". There are several other words like these, but I can't think of them now. Maybe it's because my kid is only 2.5, but I've worked with kindergardners and have never heard them use these words. I wish Leap Frog had just stuck to basic nouns such as "bus", "car", and words like that.
Unlike other users, I haven't had any problems with it's durability or functioning. It's held up for the past 3-4 months, but who knows what'll happen later.
