Toys and Games Reviews of Fridge Words Magnetic Word Builder

Customer Review: Was Mistakenly Mad - Now Happy
Summary: 4 Stars

Had seen this toy on friends fridge. Thought it cleaver. Have a 5 year old and now a 1 year old - had to get rid of the old letter fridge magnets because of choking hazard. Remembered these from the friend and recalled how they are large and uniform, OK for infants to handle - and still wanted letters for my pre-k girl to practice with. Had read the reviews that these toys often break, but I wanted one anyway so took my chances. My 5 year old played with it a little every day, and enjoyed it when she did. Really encouraged her to start linking sounds with letters and to think about how they sound together. Wonderfully educational and timely for a pre-K and Kindergarten kids. But... then... after a month it shorted out, started repeating the song and wouldn't do any thing else. She and I made up our own games with the letters instead, but I was pretty annoyed that it was broken. I took the batteries out tonight in preparation to throw the darn thing away - and was suprised to see the factory batteries inside. Huh? I thought I had swaped them. Guess not. So I put in fresh batteries just to see and... Ta-Da. Boy, do I feel SHEEPISH. It works just great. It WASN'T A SHORT, the darn thing is fine! Wonder if other units have had the same problem and were not actually broken.

Customer Review: Great educational toy!!

Leapfrog Fridge Words Magnetic Word BuilderPlease note: this review refers to the newer airplane shaped Leapfrog Fridge Words Magnetic Word Builder, not the older version.

I purchased this item for my 17 month-old daughter along with the Leapfrog Fridge Phonics (sun shaped, not the older red and blue version). First off, I was thrilled that the upper-case letters from the Fridge Phonics are interchangeable with the lower-case letters from the Word Builder. Now my daughter can learn her upper and lower-case letters at the same time. A noted change with the new versions of this toy - if a letter has more than one phonetic sound, both sounds are given. For example, when the letter A is placed in the toy it gives the long and short vowel sound. This is also true for some of the consonants that give more than one sound (i.e. the letter C).

The only drawback to this toy is that at times the voice is not as clear as I would like. Also, with a younger child, having all 26 letters out at the same time may be over whelming, so I only put up about 10 letters at a time. Other than that, I am thrilled that I purchased this toy.

Customer Review: Picky Mom's opinion
Summary: 5 Stars

I've taught for many years. I also homeschool my 5 children. Finding things to educationally entertain my [...] while I'm teaching the older children is a challenge. (we don't watch tv)
I purchased this item along with the CD of songs and the flash card set though I was skeptical about electronic toys and sound quality. We recieved it today, he loves it! I found very little that was not clearly pronounced and any confusion is easily cleared up because if you continue to press the letter it will give different examples of using that sound, and the flash card pictures coodinate w/ the song thus giving a visual aid. Letter P has popcorn all around it, the song that is sung when the letter is pushed more than twice is about letter P popping popcorn. Oh and a bonus, the baby can't get the letters down his throat ;0D! The item appears sturdy, two very little nit picky cons; The font used on the cards is slightly different than on the actual letters ( J w/ a top bar and j w/out) and the colors on the letters should coordinate with the colors used on the flashcards, they do not? This would make searching for matching letters, which my [...] did succesfully for 1/2 an hour, easier to locate. But overall I like this alot. Just my opinion.

Customer Review: Lad - L A D - You put 3 letters in 1.2.3. the word Lad is what you see!
Summary: 4 Stars

Great little toy. Our daughter walks by the fridge numerous times a day and everytime wants to stop and show us a word she learned (she is currently 2yrs 6months). I can already see that we will be getting the next size bigger(four letters) in a few months. Everything about the toy is great and educational. If I had complaints it would be in regards to the choice of words and the priority set to those words. For example: the word LAD is taught from the very begining and is frequented. Seems the word PUB comes up often as well. The toy really likes to do a ryhming word so these words come up often but I can think of several words my daughter needs to know before LAD and PUB. Overall this is an awesome toy that will be played with for five to twenty minutes a day for months and seems durable enough to last through a few kids before it might break, especially if left on the fridge instead of carried around and thrown like ours has survived thus far.
Also, if you're looking to buy a gift that won't be at the bottom of the toy box this would probably be a good idea.
Oh, and one other thing I like to see in reviews. I purchased this toy in December 2009 and it was on sale for somewhere around $[...] at amazon.

Customer Review: Be Forewarned...Has children spell certain words like GUN.
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought the Word Whammer for my son about 8 months ago. I never really saw the need to write a review until now....after it had my son spell the word GUN. I'm not kidding. I was standing next to him when it said it. I thought, it must be asking for GUM. Well it didn't...I actually took over and put the letters in that it was asking for. It was GUN. You can imagine I was a bit shocked.

While I realize there are only so many 3 letter words that it can ask you to spell and that gun is just a word, I would have thought Leap Frog would have avoided certain words for a toy recommended for 3 year olds. I already have a tough time trying to keep guns out of my son's mind and then this "educational toy" reinforces his interest.

I just want parents to be aware that there is the potential for certain words to come up. It is still a well-made product and has interested my son in learning to spell.

I would say to purchase the Leap-Frog Letter Word Factory DVD first. That was much more successful in teaching my son the letters and their associated sounds. Now that he can do that, he enjoys trying to spell words with the Word Whammer.
