Customer Review: only LF toy I ever returned!!!!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I love leap frog toys, my 3 y/o has many. I usually find them very educational. However, this toy didn't live upto my expectations. I wanted a toy to help him learn to write letters. My child learns very quickly with encouragement and correcting. At 3 he's reading at a 2nd grade level and writting somewhat legible (no thanks to this toy). This toys tells the name and phonic of each letter. The LF train, Little Leap and Leap pad do the same thing in the same way. I bought it for the writting lesson. It shows how to write them in 'computer style' not real handwritting. The reason I was so disapointed in it was that they can write anything in the spot and the toy tells them it's right. My son scribbled in the area and was told he did great. It wasn't teaching him anything. Sitting down and writting with the child, making sand letters and letting him trace with his finger and plain old letting him expierment with a pen and paper worked better than this thing. I took it back shortly after buying it.

Customer Review: A MUST for preschoolers with fine motor delay!
Summary: 5 Stars

My son (just turned 3) has been using this for about six months now. I originally bought it as he knew his upper case letters, but couldn't seem to understand that the lower case were the same letters. Now he has that (calls them Mommy letters and Baby letters), knows both upper and lower case letters, can spell EAT, MOM, BUG, HUG, BUS, BIG, and CAT, and he is beginning to actually write letters with it! His OT (occupational therapist) had been urging us to get him to work more on his writing and drawing at home, but we couldn't seem to grab and hold his interest for more than a few minutes. Now I just say, "Hey, let's do some ABC's," and he RUNS to get this out! I draw the same letter on a piece of paper next to him while he works on the little screen for up to forty-five minutes. I cannot tell you how happy we are with this! Even my mother, who LOATHES electronic toys, can't get over how great this one is! I look forward to graduating to future Leapfrog products as he gets older.

Customer Review: Daughter loves it but shuts off too quickly
Summary: 4 Stars

My four yr old daughter was obsessed with spelling and reading and writing. She is very sensitive and finding a toy that didnt have a character's face on it that she didnt like, or too loud, or music playing while she was trying to find the answer or make a loud buzzer when she gave the wrong answer or didnt write it the exact way. That was difficult to find, but this item fit the bill. My only "complaints" would be that the string that the pen is on isnt quite long enough, which made it difficult for her to maneuver so we just cut it off. The other issue was similar to other purchasers where the machine didnt give the child much time by the time they picked up the pen and wrote their three letter word. My daughter, after playing it for two days wanted to do more than three letter words so it would have been nice if there was a higher level. This toy probably wont last long as far as challenge goes but for now it is very good and it is satisfying her need to spell, read and write.

Customer Review: Great buy, teaches tons
Summary: 4 Stars

My 4 year old nephew has a pretty short attention span and yet he loves to play with the Phonics Desk. I agree with the last reviewer in that it would be more helpful if they learned lower case first. There is a setting to learn lower case letters and they are written in small type next to the upper case letter buttons so it's not a huge issue. The various games keep it interesting for him as he grows. My only complaint is that there is not enough time for him to find the letter he is looking for and sometimes it shuts off while he is still thinking (to save the battery). More time should be given for the kids to think as this frustrates him. Also there are a few three letter words (such as names) that he spells correctly but that the computer does not recognize as correct. But it is a fun game and he has gotten a lot of use out of it (bought it a year ago). His cousins got a hold of it and scratched a little the writing pad but other than that it has worked fine.

Customer Review: Great educational toy, BUT...
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm afraid this toy didn't even last a day. My 3 yr.-old son (without any instruction or explanation from his mother or me) began playing with this toy and immediately learned how to use it.

After asking you to choose a letter, the phonics desk pronounces and sounds out your choice and even draws either the upper or lowercase version in a small LCD-like display box. The toy then asks the child to write the letter in a magnetic writing area (a la "Magnadoodle") where he/she can later erase it.

Unfortunately, the pen came with a sharp point that permanently scratched the surface of the writing area that didn't allow my son to erase his letters.

This toy seemed very promising because my son was very interested in watching how the toy drew the letters and how he had the opportunity to try and draw them himself.

I don't know if all the LeapFrog Phonics Writing Desks come with a sharply pointed pen, but I do intend to find out.
