Customer Review: Children Advance andWork at Their Own Pace
Summary: 5 Stars

The Phonics Writing Desk displays Upper case letters with the lower case right below them at a color coded style. It is interactive with the child to show them how to print letters correctly and gives positive reinforcement for doing it properly. The desk works up to learning to write cursive letters correctly. It teaches letter recognition and has seven levels for the child to advance on his own or to start at the level that he is already at and includes a child writing his own words. My son avoided writing in school for some reason, but this desk encourages writing and he does write witout thinking of bulking.Children need to learn how to print letters correctly and understand the school is not the only place the letters are printed the proper way. I do need to remind my son that cursive is not yet done in his class and he can learn it with this desk, but wait until his class is doing cursive to be forming his letters in cursive. So, my child went from a child that avoided even printing to a child that advanced to cursive. My son knew all of his upper case letters by age of 2-3 and the lower case at age 3-4. This desk did not insult his abilities, which is in part why I feel he did not want to write in school. He no longer avoids writing in school or at home. This desk is an excellent learning tool as well as a toy. Mrs. Symmington

Customer Review: If At First You Don't Succeed. . .
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this toy as a surprise for my 4 year old son and intended to help him along when he played with it. He already knows his letter names and sounds and can read but I thought it would help encourage him to write and spell. Well, after one look at it and about two minutes, he decided he didn't like it. He set it down and never wanted to touch it again! I was a little disappointed, given the price, but I put it away in the closet for a month. Then, without mentioning it, one day I set it out in the playroom among the other toys. A short while later, I heard him playing with it and really enjoying himself. He played with it for an hour until dinner time, talking aloud to himself. Then, he went straight back to it after dinner. Now, he is trying to write and not just on this toy but on any paper he finds. It was worth the wait and because I didn't make a big deal about it, even though it was expensive, the laid back attitude over it has paid off. Now, I see the cost of the toy as a worth while investment and have the satisfaction of knowing that my son is enjoying himself while at the same time learning new skills.

Customer Review: Excellent learning tool, but....
Summary: 5 Stars

Our daughter received this toy for Christmas this year, and she absolutely loves it. She has spent a great deal of time with it and is learning quickly. It is an excellent tool for reinforcing what she already knows, as well as challenging her to move forward and learn more. However, she and I both get very frustrated with the timing on some of the tasks...it allows very little time for a child's mind to think and come up with answers before it will shut itself off! I mean the time frame is 5 seconds max before the child is told the answer is wrong and the game shuts down. This is not positive reinforcement for little minds, and it only teaches her that the fastest answer is the best one, not necessarily the correct answer. Other than this one thing, the toy is terrific, but this is enough to frustrate her into wanting to put it aside sometimes. Good toy if you have patience and can explain to the child that it is the toy's problem that it is too fast, not theirs that they are a little slower. ( The toy that she has varies a little in appearance from the one shown here, but has all the same components listed.)

Customer Review: Amazingly Wonderful!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have to start off by saying that this toy has become a savyor to my husband and myself. Our son, who just turned 25 months, has been enjoying this toy more than any other toy he ever received. I bought this at a garage sale for $5.00 last Spring (when he was only 21 months old), and surprisingly, he figured out this game all by him self. He will play with it independently for hours and if it sits out on a table, he will stop and turn it on every time he walks past it. I picked it up for him to learn his alphabet later on, and to play with this because of the wonderful sounds it makes. But, in the last four month, my son has taught him self all his letters, in upper and lower case, and is even spelling the three letter words. He can't write anything yet, (nor does he even talk at this point!)but he know those letters, and we couldn't be more proud of him. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants there child to start learning their letters sooner, what can it hurt? Give it a try, if they don't have the interest now, try again in another month or so, they will eventuly...I promise!

Customer Review: THE BEST!
Summary: 5 Stars

As a mother of four, we have gone through A LOT of learning toys. We bought this over 7 years ago for our first born and it has really taken some beatings over the years (i.e. dropped, sat on, banged on, ect...). It is still going strong! My fourth child loves it just as much as all the others. And the feature that turns it off after no response from the child, saves the batteries! Ours last many many months of constant use. This is my two year old's favorite toy.

Great features:
Teaches:
letter recognition
upper and lower case letters
letter formation
Phonics
Spelling 3 letter words
letter order
ALSO:
Has volume control
Turns off after a minute of no response from your child
DURABLE!!!
Can go anywhere
No pieces to lose

This one goes with us on all of our trips. I would definitely buy it again. I'm happy that Leapfrog still makes it. Among all their other offerings, this has been our family's favorite.
