Toys and Games Reviews of LEGO Ultimate Building Set - 405 Pieces (6166)Customer Review: Passing down a Tradition Summary: 5 Stars
I grew up playing with LEGOs as a kid and I bought this set for my nephew who is just starting to get into LEGOs himself. It is just great because you have all sorts of pieces and because its not a finished product like a plane or car your imagination can really do whatever it wants. When he first saw it he just screamed with happiness, thats the sort of thing you just cant buy. I'll remember that sound he made forever. In an age where so many new toys are about lights and electronics and video games its great that something from my childhood can still be enjoyed by today's generation of kids. LEGOs were a favorite of mine and my parents still have pictures of the crazy things I had put together as a kid and now my sister is doing the same thing with my nephew. She already said it was his favorite christmas gift this year.
Cant ask for anything more. If you have young kids get them this gift and help them unlock their imagination and creativity.
Customer Review: Great starting set for young Lego builders Summary: 4 Stars
This is the set to get your four and five year old kids hooked on Legos. This set includes instructions on building several small Lego models. The models are at just the right level of difficulty for young Lego builders. Also, this set has just the right number of pieces for this age of builder; you don't want a gazillion pieces around for novice builders, because they won't be able to find the pieces they need. Once they master working on these models, they will want bigger, more complicated models, which means you will have to acquire another set. But you will want to keep this one around for when friends/relatives with young kids drop by to keep them busy.
The downside of this package is that the instructions occasionally called for a colored piece that wasn't available, requiring the use of a different colored piece. Not a big deal really, but it confused my 5-year old son who was trying to complete the helicopter.
Customer Review: Big box is deceiving... Summary: 3 Stars
This big "ultimate" lego box looks so big but once you open it and the bags they are in, it ends up being about 1/4 full which is disappointing. It is a good starter set but I think you need at least 2-3 of these boxes to make anything interesting over a few inches.
Update: My daughter likes these legos but has gone back to her trusty duplos since they offer more variety, height and ease of use. I will try and get a bulk set to add to these but legos are very expensive for what you get. Within the 405 pieces, many are only one tiny square big or half the depth as a basic lego - meaning you have to stack 2 on top of each other to get a basic lego height. They seem very hard to put together too. Overall I am very disappointed in the purchase.
Customer Review: works well for a first set Summary: 3 Stars
The box is only about 1/4 filled with legos. Really for the creative builder, you would need about three of these sets to build much of anything. My son received these on Christmas, and we haven't played with it very much. It just seems like the legos don't stay together very well, and every time we build something decent, it falls apart so easily, it is hardly worth the effort. Possibly legos have always been this way. I was more interested in dolls as a girl, so this is really my first lego experience. For now they are put up in his closet. Im hoping since he is a boy, he will "get it" more than I seem to, and one day be able to build wonders with his legos. Meanwhile he seems to favor his duplo blocks, lincoln logs, and regular wooden blocks.
Customer Review: KEEPS MY KID ENTERTAINED FOR HOURS!!!!!! Summary: 4 Stars
I got this for my six year old son and he absolutely LOOOOVVVVEDDDD IT!!!!!! It is hard to keep him occupied and entertained. This toy did the job. It kept me entertained, too. Good bonding time with him without watching the tv. The only challenge is finding the very small pieces among the pile of blocks. Some also requires a lot of help from an adult and too complicated for a 6 year old. But, who says you have to follow whats in the book? This is a good way to encourage creativity in kids. I can almost see my son's brain working as he stares at the pile of blocks and tries to decide which one can go where. Overall, a very nice toy that will last a lifetime!!!! Can't beat the price, too! Much cheaper than the Lego stores at the mall.
