Toys and Games Reviews of LEGO Ultimate Building Set - 405 Pieces (6166)Customer Review: Very poor discription of the item. Summary: 2 Stars
The is just like the original lego's only much smaller. What is going on in todays world? You use to be able to buy an item and pretty much get what you paid for. This set of lego's are small, small, and yes small. Even if your child uses each piece in the set and was able to build something it would not be able to be played with. Although I must say to be honest they are still made pretty well. Just be careful in what you select and dont go by just the discription in the add. THIS IS NOT THE ORIGINAL TYPE OF LEGO's. As you can see when you view the add it just says LEGO Ultimate Building Set. That's all it says and nothing more. I purchased these for my Grandson thinking they would be a good tool to make a child use his or her imagination. Toys today are not very educational and I remembered growing up, and playing with LEGO's. It was great but not so much anymore due to their size. They are so small that if you do buy these then you better make sure there is no smaller children around. Right into the mouth and right down. I do not recommend these to anyone.
Customer Review: Love them Summary: 5 Stars
My son has spatial dyslexia and enjoys building with legos. He really likes to get the sets, but I find that I do most of the building and he does most of the fretting because he can't see what he needs to do.
So I skipped the sets for Christmas and bought him two large sets of just legos. He opened them and shrugged. We moved them into a large flat rectangular rubbermaid tote and his eyes gleamed. He went onto the sun porch on the wood floor, and went to building. He built cars, rockets, planes, houses and forts for four hours. Add a few minifigures to his lego bucket and I have one contented kid.
This was a terrific decision. Since then friends and family have seen the buckets of legos and have opted for the free play lego sets. It really is worth it. The sets are magnificent, but if your child is like mine and won't dismantle a made lego set this is a great way to put the creative play back in the mix.
My son is 9. He especially enjoyed building the cat and building a house, of which he put an alien in the attic.
Customer Review: Good starter set, but not all pictured creations can be built from this set Summary: 4 Stars
My 4 year old loved the duplo set he's had since he was one. He loves to build things based upon the pictures provided. We got him this set to see if he'd still like the smaller ones too. He does.
This set has a lot of instructions and sample pictures for him to build. Herein lies the problem. Not all of the sample pictures can be built with the pieces provided in this set. Some pictures show parts that aren't in this set or they show the picture using more of the same part than what this set provides. This has proven to be a bit frustrating for my son who loves making it look just like the picture.
That being said he still loves his Lego set. With a younger 2 year old brother we've had to restrict its use to when his brother is sleeping as there a LOT of small 1x1 parts in this set. It can be challenging for a 4 year old to find such small parts in the big pile.
Also it wouldn't hurt to provide another set of wheels or two as my son loves making the vehicles and you can only make one at a time.
Customer Review: Great product bringing it back to the old school! Summary: 5 Stars
I have always been a fan of Lego having grown up with them. I was hoping to get my niece into Legos as well as they are simy one of the best toys for fostering creativity. Some of the kits I have purchased recently have too few pieces and the pie es that are in the kits are very designed and not as reusable or flexible in alternate building projects. Now, those kits may be fine for some but my vantage point is the original knight joust set where you built the horses from Lego pieces. Alas I looked at the current kit and decided it was worth a shot because of the variety of pieces and the number of pieces. After receiving the kit, my niece instantly built a car, a house, and a helicopter! I'd say that is a good kit! Legos are durable as mine have lasted a good 20+ and are still tight. The jug is nice to have for storage as well, an you can stack multiple jugs.
All-in-all a great kit for either a younger builder in transition from duplo or an older builder that needs more pieces.
Customer Review: OK Place to Start, but You'll Want More Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this for my children and to relive my days of playing with Legos in the 1970s. The kids really enjoy playing with them. I like this generic collection of mult-purpose bricks better than the sets that are designed to build one unique item. For the price (normally around twenty five dollars), you get a reasonable amount of stuff. On the down side, there are a lot of the smaller bricks (1 x 2 and 1 x 1). After playing with this for a few days I found that my kids wanted plates, bricks (2 x 4 and 2 X 8), and wheels (my son loves to make cars). I went to lego dot com where I was able to buy these specific things separately. Also, if you want to find some odd parts from old sets (even going back to the 1970s) try bricklink dot com. It takes awhile to navigate the site, but you can buy whatever individual pieces you want used.
In summary, buy this set first from Amazon and then go to lego dot com or bricklink dot com to buy wheels, bricks and plates.
