Toys and Games Reviews of LEGO Ultimate Building Set - 405 Pieces (6166)

Customer Review: Toy dollars well spent
Summary: 5 Stars

No they are not cheap. No the box isn't full to even half capacity. But these toys are still around for a reason: they rock. More specifically, they are indestructible, offer immense replay value, encourage creative quiet and thoughtful play, promote fine motor skill development, and they are just plain fun.

Think about the countless cheap $3.99 and $4.99 soft plastic throw away toys you've bought over the years: invariably imported and with unknown lead content, cost pennies to make, including the polly pockets, fairies, mermaids, bratz, little ponies, strawberry shortcakes, littlest petz, etc. All of those toys are very restrictive in the type of play they permit, fall apart, and lose your child's interest after a few days.. until you buy another worthless set for their next "fix."

In the case of legos i would argue that if you just refrain from buying those cheap blister packed toys for a few months you will have saved more than enough to get this or another "flexible" set of legos. I don't care for the elaborate lego sets that have you follow intricate instructions to build a pirate ship, or harry potters house, or a star wars backdrop, etc. Those are just as restrictive and inflexible in their play.

So get this set or something similar as soon as you are sure your kid won't choke on a brick. It is something they will play with now and in the future. You'll beat inflation, you'll have it for future kids you might have, or those who might visit, and it will always have excellent resale value on e_bay.

As for the merits and value of this particular set, i think it is fairly reasonable relative to prices for used, bulk collections you might get on an auction website, or compared to the more expensive, larger, thematic sets - such as the "townhouse", lunar lander, or whatever. It has 4 wheels, 2 axles, 1 figure (a mechanic dude), a set of mini tools for the figure, 1 door, 2 windows, some clear pieces for windshields or windows, a propellor/windmill piece, a radiator grille, a cute mini steering wheel, and assorted bricks including some long ones. The base unfortunately isn't even standard height, but sort of a cheap 1/5 or 1/4 height. So that's a little lame. So it isn't perfect but i can't find a better variety pack for the price. Although the Lego 4+ Basic Bulk Set might be a good second set to consider.

We got this set to augment the pink little girls set with the jump rope on the box. Together they are a reasonable set but its still a small collection. I would contend that similar to the defense department maintaining an army that can fight a war in 2 theatres at once, you should have enough legos to build 2 houses at once. That is unless you have more than 2 kids...

Customer Review: Decent Lego set, but seems limited for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

I've never actually purchased Legos before (you just always seem to have some around, you know?) so I wanted to get a good quantity for my kids. This one -- the 405-piece set in the plastic bucket -- sounded like the best overall price-to-parts value. It's a good set, but not quite as "big" as I thought. When you actually see it, the 405 quantity doesn't seem like much (barely fills half the bucket) and a lot of them are small. Personally, I want a 55-gallon drum of just regular, old rectangular bricks... not so many of the fussy, little odd-shaped ones they give you here. And there's only 1 "person" in this kit, and one wheeled vehicle. Would it have broken the bank for them to toss in a few of each?

When I actually started comparatively pricing Legos, I was kind of shocked at how expensive they are (the people and the vehicles in particular). As I say, this is a decent starter kit but it just seems like you don't get enough for your money in general. I ended up also getting "LEGOŽ Bricks & More Builders of Tomorrow Set 6177" which, when added to this, kind of fills the bucket. But that's sixty-odd bucks right there... a lotta greenbacks for plastic blocks.

Still, the kids play with them for hours. Hard to put a price on that.

Customer Review: Classic, great toy
Summary: 5 Stars

I am under the impression that a lot of folks reviewing here are not particularly well acquainted with Lego in the context of the wider world of toys out there. They are expensive because the quality of construction is excellent. You do, invariably, get what you pay for. We buy Lego, Playmobil, PlanToys, etc. for our kids. These are all up there in the price bracket because they are durable and they fit together beautifully and consistently. My toddler son is now using my daughter's old Duplos and they look just like they did when we bought them. We buy "junk" toys occasionally, such as Polly Pocket, and I usually regret it. I paid $30 for a Polly Pocket "RV" and it literally went to pieces after very gentle use in a matter of days. I threw the whole thing away after a couple of weeks and she didn't care. My daughter will not remember that piece of junk when she is an adult but, like me, she will remember her Legos. I agree that there is quite a bit of space left over in this bucket, but you do see the piece count right on the package. Perhaps 400 sounds like a lot, but when it comes to Legos, yes, you do probably want more and the great thing is, with the excess room in the tub, you have room to add more pieces just like we did with her Duplo tub.

Customer Review: Lego Building Set -- Good in Some Ways, Bad in Others
Summary: 5 Stars

There are both good and bad things about this Lego set. I feel the good and bad points are about equal.

First, the good points. It has 405 pieces of which most are seven different colors and of great quantities. This facilitates the mixture of colored parts.

Second, the bad points. It comes in a large bin, which is mostly filled with parts in five plastic bags. These bags are relatively hard for anyone to open. I mostly needed a scissor to do this. After the bags are opened and discarded, the pieces only fill a small portion of the bin. This is good and bad, meaning the bin is very lightweight and deceptive at point of purchase. The good part of this, is additional quantities of parts can be mixed with the initial set. This adds to the weight of the bin. However, simply doubling the set, which I have, only fills the bin slightly further.

If you want a good starter set, buy this set. Know this however, you will want to expand this set by purchasing other Lego sets. In the meantime, Leggo my Lego and let us have fun building and creating.

Customer Review: Great lego, way too little of it.
Summary: 4 Stars

I know many people said about how little lego pieces are inside of this large box.
I also heard from my sister who bought the same box. So I knew this fact before buying...
But still it was shocking as to how little 405 pieces of lego really meant.
It fills up less than 1/4 of the box.
I was quite disappointed....

This box is just beginning of collection. You really can't build much of anything with pieces included in this set.
And since large pieces of lego are needed to build anything worth building, I now have to buy another set, or order separate pieces directly from Lego

By the way, small green building plate included in this box is a joke. It is small and thin, and feels out of place with rest of the lego.
I once again had to buy 10x10 inch green plate for $5 at Walmart.

Lego itself is great. What a creative toy!
But I am warning new buyers that you will end up spending more than $100 just to get enough pieces to build something interesting.
Lego really is expensive and premium toy.
