Toys and Games Reviews of LEGO Star Wars Motorized Walking AT-ATCustomer Review: It's alive!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for my husband on Father's Day. I was quite excited to see him put it together. He got the legs done within an hour or so and we tried to make the thin walk....and all it did was twitch. We hadn't hooked up the power yet, but we figured the legs should move without it. At this point I was prepared to call LEGO headquarters and complain at length. He continued to put it together while I moped and fumed about our new non-walking walker. Finally he got to the power-pack installation and we turned it IT WALKED! When we tried to move it earlier it was not able to turn the motor so it siezed, but we couldn't tell that because it appeared that everything was turning as much as it could. We were seeing what turned out to be the motion of the worm gear switching between forward and reverse.
This little model is wonderful. It walks in forward and reverse and the head moves back and forth as it walks. I can easily see this being modified into other walking robots and it gives a great example of how rotational motion can be transformed into linear motion. Plus it's kinda cute. Pew pew
Customer Review: Not for the little ones... Summary: 4 Stars
This is yet another exceptional piece of ingenuity from the folks at Lego. I continue to be amazed at the creations they come up with. Plan on experienced older builders needing at least 4-6 hours to assemble this baby, so unless mom or dad are great with Legos I wouldn't recommend this for kids under 12. The mechanical functions work well, but like all Lego sets, they can come apart very easily causing frustrating play for younger kids. This one is particularly fragile, and the position the legs are set in is critical to it's function. If the leg position gets knocked out of whack, plan on about 1/2 hour or so of disassembling/rebuilding to correct them. As such, my 7-yr-old loves to show his off but is content to just keep it on the shelf and look at it.
Customer Review: Back to Planet Hoth and those AT-ATs! Summary: 5 Stars
Lego hits a home run with this mechanized model of the AT-AT you first saw terrorizing the Rebels on Hoth in Episode V of Star Wars. This advanced model (more than 1100 pieces) features a handle on top for easy transport, but the kicker is both its size (over 12" tall and 14" long) and the mechanization. With the addition of 6-AA batteries, this model uses its articulated legs to walk smoothly and "effortlessly", with the head swiveling... just like in the movie!
The disappointment? Not too hard to build. I do have an expectation that these collector sets are more complicated and take more effort to construct.
But it's so cool when it walks!
Customer Review: Frustrating Summary: 1 Stars
While this toy isn't hard to put together, it is tedious as there are 3 manuals and over a thousand parts. It looks great when finished, but we have yet to be able to get the thing to walk without parts popping off all over the place (which breeds strife - breeding of strife is not good). The set was missing 2 parts, which doesn't sound like much when you have over a thousand, but they are connector parts, so some of the body armor will not stay attached.
Would not recommend - would not buy again. Hope it stays together for at least a few days so our son can at least get that much fun out of it.
Customer Review: Best Motorized Lego for your Buy! Summary: 5 Stars
This lego is a great price. It really walks forward and backward. It also comjes with neat mini figures- Luke Skywalker, General Veers, ATAT pilot, and a snowtrooper with a rifle. It also comes with a grappling line to hang Luke. I give this durability a 4, since it did not walk until I fixed up a few gears. It is one of those toys that if you mess up one little piece it messes up the whole. The age one this really matters, I am thirteen and I needed a little help from my dad. Anyways this is a great buy with many customized features.
