Toys and Games Reviews of LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader's TIE Fighter (8017)Customer Review: Coool Darth Vader Summary: 5 Stars
I remember when Star Wars first came out. it wasn't just THE thing it was everything. a friend and i tried hard to make the charactors and ships out of my vast collection of legos at the time. remember, this was the 1970s (that was LAST mellinium). we even took brown yarn and glued it on one of the classic bigger figures for chewbacca. what we did to make Darth's TIE fighter was even more hidious, we used duct tape!!!
Now those days are past.....(sob)
now i have this set to remind me of the good old days of a child's imagination. soon the movie blu rays will be out and all will be well again with the universe.
Oh yeah, the set. looks great and fun to put together. i am going to have fun "shooting" it and watching it "blow up" with my X wing fighter
3/6/11 DONE
took me a couple hours (and lunch) but it is finished. Cool thing about this set: there are a couple missles to shoot and a place undernieth for the light saber.
I'd say the thing i like most about this set and legos in general is the while putting it together you don't know how the pieces work together until you are done. this is the case with this set in a big way. VERY cool set and very sturdy
Customer Review: Awesome Lego Kit Summary: 5 Stars
My son and I built this together yesterday. (He is 6) We had a great time working on it together. He loves that it came with Darth Vader and that he can sit in the ship.
As with other Lego kits, the quality is extremely high. The pieces all fit together and make solid connections. Pieces are straight, line up well, etc. This is very impressive on the parts where multiple tubes coming out of one piece have to line up with another piece's holes.
He'll probably play with it fully assembled for another day or two. Then we'll pull it apart and add the pieces to his collection. This to me is the real strength of Legos. It's funny making something from the movie, but I think it is better for my son and more fun when we start building our own creations. The cool thing the film kits bring to the table are pieces that can be used in really creative ways. Figuring out how to put together moving parts is also a lot of fun and takes some real analytical thinking.
I loved Lego as a kid myself and think they've done nothing but improve on what has always been a great product.
Customer Review: NICE LOOKING SHIP! Summary: 4 Stars
Nice looking ship. Looks good when built. Easy to build but nicely crafted. Small quibble-could use an extra piece under the cockpit to secure it better(which I've done with an extra piece I had from another lego set). Also both side wings(panels)could use a tighter bond but overall a fine addition to any Star Wars lego collection.
PRO's-Ship design, Darth Vader mini-figure, wings tilt and straighten, cockpit design and underneath ship a small peg/click to hold/attach Darth Vader's light saber.
CON's-Needs another small flat 2x3 brick plate to help secure under cockpit better so when you put in Vader, it won't separate the cockpit (easy fix). Wings need perhaps a couple more technique pegs to secure a tigher bon(again, easy fix).
Overall with some minor tweaks it's a fun ship. Recommended and Highly Recommended for any Star Wars fan or Darth Vader fan.
Customer Review: Beautiful look, but it falls apart at little more than a touch Summary: 1 Stars
I find it hard to understand why at Lego Design Headquarters they can come up with so many beautifully engineered sets, so that a youngster can assemble and learn from that effort, yet not understand that a child will want to play with the set too.
Assemble this Tie-fighter and let a child play a little with it and the wings come off. The arms that connect to the inner sides of the large wings are really narrow, with the wings held on by only 2 or 3 points. If the child playing with this set is really unlucky, more comes apart than the wings. The set will even disassemble when you are trying to install Darth onto his seat.
If you won't become frustrated by having to reassemble this set basically every time your child plays with it, until you're nearly blue-in-the-face, then go ahead.
Otherwise, I'd look elsewhere for a Tie-fighter.
Customer Review: Looks cool, but a bit wobbly Summary: 4 Stars
As with most Lego toys it is easily assembled. Fairly well engineered, but I have to agree with other reviews that state the wing connections as weak. Connecting the wings to the main body is quite easy, but the design suffers a terrible wobble. They do stay put well, but they just...wobble a lot. Nothing a little super glue wouldn't fix if you had no intentions of ever taking it apart! The little flick fired "missiles" leave something to be desired. Neat idea, but they might shoot two feet if you hold it three feet off the ground and they bounce. Maybe it was a safety feature to keep them underpowered, but I really dislike it. Either way to me it's not some toy I will play with so I it's really not a big deal. It now sits next to my standard TIE in all it's glory! Great display pieces!
