Toys and Games Reviews of LEGO Mindstorms NXTCustomer Review: NXT - Great but why such a small memory? Summary: 4 Stars
I won't repeat what everyone has said about the functionality about this toy but what I AM happy to repeat is the fact that the memory is WAY too small. Just as you start to get enthusiastic about this product you hit the dreaded memory full problem. This is really disappointing because a) it limits children's ability to explore the world of robotics and b) because memory is SO CHEAP that to give the customer less than you get in some musical greetings cards is rediculous. If Lego thought it might add to the cost then why-oh-why didn't they simply put a memory expansion slot on the NXT brick? Then we could put some serious memory in it. It's also naive to think that this is just a toy. Lots of educational establishments (including universities) are buying this thing because it has such potential. Come on Lego - give us a memory expansion option!!!
Customer Review: Lego Mindstorms NXT is fun training for future scientists Summary: 5 Stars
Fortunately we have a friend who lives in the USA and came to Brazil and so, could bring it to us here where the retail prices are prohibitive, around R$ 1,999 Brazilian Reais that make today over US$ 1,000 ... It is a high tech toy which is available is some very few good schools where there are few robots to be used by large groups of students. As my son aged 12 showed interest we got him one Lego Mindstorms NXT for his personal use, and some of his friends come to play with him. It is fun for him and friends, it is a toy that helps him and friends to develop technical skills, habilities, competencies. Hope that they be able to develop lower cost robots like that here in Brazil, to proportionate this opportunity to more children, and so, get a better standard of living for all. It is a marvelous, intelligent toy. Strongly recommend it to all.
Customer Review: Great toy, some problems learning to program Summary: 4 Stars
I am a 65 year old grandma and it took me over 6 hours to build the robot on the front of the box. Built the one in the box marked "try this one first" and it only took about 1 1/2 hours. The main problem with the one on the front of the box is that it is sometimes difficult to discern exactly which piece is being used where. Also the cables were very difficult to get into place. Had to take the top part off to do it.
I have made the robot walk a few steps after you tap on the touch sensor. I learned to program in many computer languages and am sure after a bit will get the hang of the programming.
I had a blast building the robot but am afraid the batteries will run out before I am ready to take it apart to build another - and guess where the batteries are. Yep, you have to almost take the robot apart to get to them.
Customer Review: LEGO Minsorms NXT-A Highly Creative Product Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this product as a present for my ten-year old grandson. He has had a life-long interest in legos. This past June he participated in a week-long Robot Camp. They
used this product. Since they used it, I thought maybe
I was making a mistake buying it. However, my grandson was thrilled with it. Since he now owned his own, he was able to create and program robots and then rebuild the robots in other forms. He called twice to tell me how much he liked it. He has become so proficient in using it that he was able to to assist a teacher at his middle school, who had obtained the product for his class's use. This is probably the best gift I have ever bought for him. It certainly is more expensive than the gifts I usually buy, but I think it was well worth the money. E. Tirpak
Customer Review: Probably more fun for the adults than the kids... Summary: 5 Stars
This is a very interesting and educational toy. It has lead to many discussions and further reading by the young teen who received it. The diagrams for the "quick start" robot are not as clear as they could be, but I was able to prevail in about an hour - the 13-year-old recipient was not. Once together, it was easy to build further robots as this "quick start" was a very useful starting module. Overall, it is fun, educational, and a good starting point to reinforce an existing interest in the field. I have found that the adults in the house were ultimately more entertained and intrigued than the younger folks. I give it five stars because it was engaging, educational, and inspired an interest in engineering. Too bad such gifts for the 12-16-year-old set are so few and far between.
