Toys and Games Reviews of LEGO Duplo Building Set - 71 Pieces (5380)Customer Review: Awesome first Lego set for little ones Summary: 5 Stars
We got this Duplo set for our son, who is almost 21 months, for Christmas. He loves it! He's too young to make particularly complex creations, but he really loves snapping the blocks together and taking them apart, as well as playing with the stuff Mom and Dad make. (And we have tons of fun with these, too!) Heck, he even has a great time just dumping the blocks out of the bin and putting them back in ...
The set comes with a good assortment of rectangular and square blocks, and a few sloping and curved ones, as well as one small baseplate, a wheeled rectangular block (my son's favorite!) and a "guy" (he looks like a construction worker to me).
The blocks seem as durable as they were back when I was a kid, and they have just the right degree of "snappiness" -- they're not too hard to snap together or take apart, but they don't come apart too easily, either.
A couple of notes:
* Be sure to check the prices carefully before you buy. A lot of third-party sellers on Amazon are jacking the price WAY up. You can find much better deals if you buy directly from Amazon or Lego, or at brick-and-mortar stores. This is NOT a hard-to-find item.
* Consider getting the big 15-by-15-inch baseplate, which you can buy separately. It definitely adds a lot of play value. (Again, check prices carefully, though!)
Customer Review: Good Starter Set, but could use another large plate. Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great first set. Duplo blocks are Lego's larger toddler blocks, so the smallest piece is an over-sized 2x2 block.
I would suggest buying one of the big green base plates along with this set. LEGO Large Green Building Plate (15" X 15") This set has only the one smallish green building plate to build on which limits what you can build. We had to be creative to build houses, stairs or anything requiring a large base.
Included in this set is a smallish green base, a car frame and a lego man as well as a nice variety of building blocks. The storage bin is very durable and easy for adults to open but a challenge for most toddlers. One odd thing about this set is that many of the colors are kind of muted rather than the bright, vivid colors most of us associate with a basic lego starter set--this surprised me, but didn't bother my toddler at all.
I think the base plate is supposed to work with both Duplo and standard Legos, but I'm not sure. I think Duplo blocks are supposed to connect into the standard legos, too--although I don't know many older kids that would want to do that.
Customer Review: Everybody loves this set! Summary: 5 Stars
My kids (23 months old and 6 months old) have had this for 3 months, and they play with it every day. In fact, it's so much fun that my husband and I (who both have great memories of legos, and can't wait till our kids are old enough for them) often sit down to play with them! The smallest blocks are large enough that I feel safe with my 6-month-old son chewing on them.
There's also enough room in the box to get another set to add to the 71 pieces.
Some helpful advice: I made it clear to my daughter when she got this that she could ONLY play with this set "on the blanket" because I didn't want little duplos all over the house! We've always kept a blanket with the box, and she often pulls down the blanket in indication that she wants to play with this set.
Another plus is that, at 23 months, she's unable to open this box herself, so I can make sure she picks up her other toys before I open this box for her to play with her "blocks," as she calls them. And it's a great tool for teaching her to "clean up" after she plays-- tossing the duplos in the box makes a very satisfying crashing noise.
Customer Review: Fun toy for toddlers Summary: 5 Stars
We got this for my daughter when she was just over 2 years old.
I didn't think any of the parts were small enough to be a real issue for her as far as choking, but that is just my personal opinion.
She has had lots of fun playing with these. She will play with these by herself, as well as with mom and dad.
I think it's worth getting another set, in addition, though. There really are not enough blocks. It's a good starter set, though, to gauge how much a child will like them.
We combined the set with some Duplos that I had as a kid and that's just about the perfect amount.
One complaint about this set is that there's only one "Car" and the platform piece (for building houses and such on) is WAY TOO SMALL!!! The platform that came with the set I had as a kid was twice the size and much more useful. Also, it would be nice if you got more than one person with the set.
Great toys. And they are not made in China; this was important to us.
Customer Review: He Never Tires of His Legos!... Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this set at Wal-mart for my son when he was about a year old. At that point he was a little too young to have the patience to sit and attach the blocks together. However, now, at almost 16 months, this is one of the first things he goes for in his playroom.
He's figured out to connect the blocks, but is still a bit young to really make anything, such as a house or building. The size of the pieces are great for his clumsy little hands, large enough that he can grasp them and stick them together. He LOVES the little car that comes with, and plays with it all the time. I also really like that this is a toy we can play with together, it's not something he loses interest in after a few minutes.
Overall, I definitely recommend Duplo Legos! I'll absolutely be buying more sets as he continues to grow. I was a huge fan of Lego's as a child, and I'm thrilled that my son gets so much enjoyment out of them as well!
