Toys and Games Reviews of LEGO City Advent Calendar 2008Customer Review: Overpriced and Underwhelmed Summary: 2 Stars
Lego's are always fun, right?
Well, as it turns out, no.
It's hard to believe Lego is selling this for this price. For that, you get 24 itty bitty sets. Seriously, you'd find a better toy in a Happy Meal. They're pitiful.
And if that wasn't bad enough, the little bitty sets haven't been complete. There's a picture for each one depicting what you're building. On at least three days, we had a piece or two missing, and my son couldn't complete the figure.
Further, I don't know what he's supposed to do with the sets once he snaps them together. They're not stand alone toys . . . I think maybe you have to have the rest of the Lego city to make sense of them. Today was a table with what I think are supposed to be two pies on it. Why? Who knows. What's he supposed to do with that? Pose it next to the weird fireplace thing from last week?
To make things worse, they have pictures of really cool Lego kits all over the Advent box -- a plane, a big Christmas tree, etc. I suppose it's too encourage you to buy the sets so that you feel less ripped off by your advent calendar. The problem is that my young son was severely disappointed when there wasn't a cool plane in the box. Every day he asks if today is the plane day (even though I've tried to adjust his expectations downward . . . way, WAY downward).
I will say that my little boy has enjoyed having a daily treat to look forward to. So I'll give it two stars for that. But really, spend your money elsewhere. This is a rip-off. Shame on you, Lego.
Customer Review: A Holiday Must Have!! ~~WE LOVE THIS ! ~~ Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this last year for my 4 year old son (who is now 5 1/2). I thought he'd like it, but wasn't sure what to expect. WOO HOO!! This was so much fun. It was definitely one of "those" toys, where you think to yourself, "This was one of the best $30.00 I've spent.". It's by no means cheap, but, honestly, watching my little guy's excitement every time he opened another door was a delight for me.
I incorporated counting, number recognition and the brain-teaser of finding the numbered door. The calendar layout is a scene of the Lego City. The numbered doors are scattered throughout the city, so your child has to hunt for the correct number. I also used this as a way to talk about our family's religious beliefs and what Christmas means to us. For someone like me, who loves the Christmas season, this was a joyful way to bring the holidays into our home all month long.
**Note: I recommend putting the calendar out of reach after each use. We found out, rather quickly, that the calendar's lure was irresistible. One is very likely to end up with doors poked open and prizes pilfered. For $30 I wanted the fun to last all month. :)
Customer Review: Awesome! Summary: 5 Stars
This toy is a great idea for any child who loves his or her legos! My son had been having a difficult time getting up for school. Not so during the month of December! He jumps out of bed and gets ready so that he can open the next door in his advent calendar. The basic premise is that the calendar is organized in groups of three. The first door contains a character, followed by two doors of objects that are associated with that character. For example, the first item is a man holding a chicken leg. The next two windows a barbecue and a table with cooking kitchen utensils. All of the items fit within the Lego "City" Universe, and are loads of fun to play with. Probably the only disappointment for me is that none of the items are really "Christmas" or even "winter" thematically (For example, there is a woman in a tank-top who runs a snow-cone stand). Hmmm.... I think that centering around a winter or Christmas theme is the one way that this product could be stronger (it IS an Advent Calendar after all!). Nevertheless, my son LOVES this calendar, and at the cost of typical lego products, you get a lot of characters for your money! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Customer Review: Very good for our 4 1/2 year old boy Summary: 5 Stars
He very much enjoyed opening this calendar. It was a good way to get away from poor quality chocolate that one usually finds in advent calendars. But the expectation of chocolate is still there, so we just got a bag of good quality chocolates and gave him one each day when we opened the Lego calendar. They were very exciting, but get ready to buy more as they really do spark and interest. I recommend buying a flat square Lego building board too... to set them up on. They are very cute but small. Easily lost. But the nice part is that we kept finding "extra" pieces of the smallest and most likely to be lost included each day. We were very satisfied with this calendar and hope they change the pieces every year because we will want to do it again next year. Keep in mind pieces are VERY small and I don't recommend for children who still want to put things in their mouths. Our 4 1/2 year old did fine with them. I give this product a "3" on durable because pieces get lost easily and a "2" on education because this is just for fun, though it dose build fine motor skills.
Customer Review: Eh, last year's was better. Summary: 2 Stars
Last year, I discovered Legos created an advent calendar and loved it. Each day had several lego pieces to make up a small kit that was fun to put together.
This year's city advent calender is a disappointment. On day 9, a small, 3 piece kit that made a grate was the prize. I've received 3 mini-figs (one in a tank top with an ice-cream cone), a cat stuck in a tree and 2 summer outdoors vender machines. While, yes, this is a city themed calender, one would hope that at least a couple of them would incorporate winter/Christmas in them! (Not to mention take more than 2 seconds to put together.)
Even with the random kits, I would be enjoying this a lot more if they were at all challenging! However, these 2 or 3 piece kits, just don't have the same feel, especially at the price it costs, as last year's calender that truly lived up to the Lego name.
My opinion? Pass on this year's if you were still thinking on getting it and hope that next year, Lego gets it right.
