My family is a little rock crazy, and we wanted to give our kid a fun geology-re;ated experience. This was perfect. Digging for the rocks was the perfect activity. It was hard in a good way, messy in a good way, and adventuresome in the comfort of our dining room. It's a roller coaster of emotion -- excitement at seeing the first hint of a rock, then confusion as you try to figure out what it is while its still embedded in the plaster, then excitement as you realize its bigger than you first thought, then frustration that it isn't coming out yet, then elation when it does, then exhaustion when you realize there's more to dig. And repeat. :}
We got 11 rocks instead of the eight the box and manual says you are supposed to get -- don't know if it was an accident or what, but it was a nice bonus. Three of them were amethysts, two quartz, two rose quartz, two agate, and one dolomite. [The instructions imply that you are supposed to get five types of rocks with each kit, so even if you get the eight, there will be some repeats.] The rocks were of a respectable size -- small, but not too small. They were also partially tumbled/polished, which was nice.
Other people said they had trouble using the tools supplied. However, we did almost the entire project with the plastic supplies. It takes a bit of strength and a bit of patience, but it's doable and it wont hurt the rocks, your kid, or the furniture. What WAS difficult was putting the rocks on the collection card -- but the result was worth it. The card and the little carrying pouch are nice touches at the end of the activity.
Cons: The magnifying glass is cheap. It's small, and distorts at the sides. Not that I was expecting a first class magnifying glass, but still a disappointment. And, while they did provide some information on the rocks, more would have been appreciated.
