Customer Review: If you want a good train table, here's what you need to do:

I'm a woodworker, and have built train tables. Look, this table and almost every other one are made from the cheapest materials imaginable: MDF board (basically pressed fine sawdust and glue) and/or particle board (coarse sawdust and glue), with a very thin laminate on top of it. That means that there is no wood grain in the material, making it both prone to sagging over time and breakage at the joints. If you are set on getting one of these, be sure to use a good wood glue on the joints before screwing them together.
Here's a better idea: build one yourself. Buy some cabinet grade hardwood plywood, 3/4" thickness. Look up the overall dimensions of this or any other train table that looks good to you. Get a good look at one on display at a local toy store so you can see how they're assembled. Then make it yourself. A jigsaw, circular saw, trim router with a 1/4" roundover bit, and a drill driver are really the only tools you need to make one. If you really want the table top that comes with factory made train tables, you can order those separately and still end up paying the same overall price for a table that will be much stronger. Use pocket screw joinery (the jigs and instructions can be found for under $50, and you'll be amazed how well it works and how useful it is). One sheet of plywood can build one of these. The trundles that come as an option for these tables are simple to make too, and you can buy casters that are far superior to what comes with the factory made ones.
Seriously, you build your own and you will come away with a table that is far superior to this product in durability. Assume the kid will climb and jump on this thing, because he/she will! The construction of these factory made tables simply isn't up to that kind of abuse.
