Toys and Games Reviews of Jakks Creepy Crawlers BugmakerCustomer Review: Fun for the kids (and the kid in all of us) Summary: 4 Stars
When my daughter asked santa for this for Christmas I didn't know what she was talking about. We did not see it in ANY stores. Going on blind faith, we received it from santa and have been very pleased.
First off, the molds are die cast. Reminded me of toys when I was a kid. The oven is plastic - don't know how durable it will be, but hey, you leave it on the table when things are cooking. Also, don't forget to buy a 60W candelabra bulb - not included.
At first she went to work just filling in the molds with solid colors. By the time we were on our 3rd batch we were trying different head colors, just the antennae or legs multicolored, swirls... We were having a ball just seeing what different combinations we could get. My wife outdid us all with a spider with multicolored body with perfect white dots up it's legs.
Overall, she (we) were entertained for hours. She was very patient, bubbly with anticipation as the creepy crawlers cooled. Very cool toy.
Some other things to mention:
as stated above, don't forget the bulb
I would suggest getting refill goop and maybe different colors since it only comes with 3 smaller bottles
One drawback is that it is not sold in any stores by us so getting new molds to create different creepy crawlers will be a blind internet purchase.
It takes about 15-20 minutes for the molds to cool so it will teach the child patience while they are working on another mold.
Fill the molds completely. if you leave too thin a goop layer, they will look cool, but will be prone to ripping or tearing if played with roughly (like all kids do).
So far, so good. Overall very pleased with our bugmaker
Customer Review: Excellent toy, Difficult for supplies Summary: 4 Stars
The toy is fantastic, the bulb sells seperately for like a dollar no biggie and we have had ours for two years and for a 7 year old boy that in itself is amazing! The plastic is durable, quality cord, the heat is self contained so no worries on burning a floor or a table, the bulb lasts along time, the molds are easy to use good heavyweight and durable, they clean well, the lids on the goop fit well and the supplies do not dry out unless left open for long durations..ALL PLUSES!!!
HOWEVER...BE AWARE.. the molds and goop and fx all sell seperate the amount you get with the oven is not nearly enough to last any duration especially if your child digs this the way mine did! I spent HOURS online searching for places and following leads for molds and goop, TOYMAX website is no longer up as of 7/25/10 and ToysRus and other toy store carriers DO NOT sell the molds or goop seperately EXCEPT for the SAME MOLDS AND SAME COLOR GOOP as the oven comes with, ridiculous!!! Other auction houses etc only carry the oven with the inital supplies and alot of the party supply places that advertise the creepy crawler molds actually are selling the already made rubber bugs..google search is not an exact science! I finally found a seriously awesome site that sells dozens of different molds fx and colored goop a little pricy but I guess it matters on whether your kid is in love with this toy the way mine is. The website is [...] and no im not affiliated or family etc just passing it along to the next christmas shopping mom that isnt thinking ahead (I didnt think ahead and spent months listening to my son complain he couldnt use his toy!). Good luck and enjoy.
Customer Review: Bunch of fun, 60s version better though Summary: 4 Stars
This oven is very cute, but not very durable. The on/off switch jammed and broke within a year of use so it had to be tossed. Plus, it uses something as weird as a 60 watt candelabra bulb to bake the bugs. Wow. It does work well though, when the switch is working, and bakes really cute bugs. The only downside I can say from it is that it's hard to really tell when they're done since the bugs are completely enclosed within the machine the entire time they're baking. This is not at all like the open version we had in the 60s. If you can, honestly, get on an online auction site and try to get a 60s thingmaker machine and the molds. You'll be happier with the results. If you cannot, this works fine but just remember to buy a bunch of bulbs because they do burn out quickly since they kids will use this thing nonstop once they get one! This is greatly, grealy loved in our house and I do recommend it with the above limitations. In addition, if you're looking for more goop and can't find it, try the online auction site with an e. We've used their goop and have had very nice results with it. The goop is hard to find, even amazon didn't have it at Christmas this year. Don't know why either!
Customer Review: Bug Fun Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for my 4 year old son for Christmas. I was concerned that he would lose interest in it or not be able to do it because the age recommendation is 8 and up. The instructions were very easy to read and follow. Of course my son can't read, so we explained the directions to him and soon he was making his first tray of bugs. He was able to do the whole process by himself, with only our supervision when it came time to actually cook the bugs. It really is easy. It's a little addicting, too. We have a ton of these little bugs laying around, now. My husband and I have also made some bugs, its very fun. We still have plenty of bug making goo left over so a little really does go a long way.
I don't understand the big deal about the light bulb; to me it was no different than having to buy batteries for toys. After I purchased the Bugmaker I went to the grocery store and bought a light bulb. It wasn't hard to find, or hard to install.
Our family liked the Creepy Crawlers Bugmaker so much that I went out and bought another one for a friend's son.
Customer Review: It's fun to 'cook bugs'... Summary: 4 Stars
Great product. My son is having lots of fun in cooking (making) bugs. I guess if I could change any thing about this product is that the manufacturer should include a little booklet with bug facts to match the molds that are included. Also, I was expecting a few more bug 'molds' but this kit only comes with two. Finally, your little one must have a steady hand when placing the mold into the 'oven' because if it goes in at a slant, you will have to tip the oven to get the mold out and then means the 'goo' will slosh all over the inner parts of the oven. My husband just unscrewed the bottom and it cleaned-up in a snap. Now it's as good as new, ready to cook more bugs. I'm thiking of getting some more colors of 'goo' and some more molds just give my son a little more variety. Just an FYI for the shoppers out there. :-)
