Toys and Games Reviews of Eyeclops Bionic Eye Multizoom, Green

Customer Review: Fantastic Edutainment Toy
Summary: 5 Stars

A friend said his daughter (10) wanted a microscope and I suggested that he consider the Eyeclops instead. Then I realized that I hadn't reviewed it. [I mention this so you know that I really like the Eyeclops; enough to recommend it to friends]

Last year my SIL bought this for the children and I have to say the whole family has used it and enjoyed it. My husband has used it to read tiny inscriptions on jewelry. I've used it in conjunction with the kids' science unit on crystals -- we looked at salt and sugar. And, of course, we've used it to look at untold numbers of warts, moles, freckles and scabs.

To use it you just take it out of the box and plug it into the television. What you see is a magnified image on the television screen. This ability to share is something you can't do with most moderately priced microscopes. The picture is in color, although every once in awhile it will be in black and white. We haven't figured out why that happens but it's usually fixed by jiggling the connections.

Magnification-wise there's not a great many options, but you can go up to about four hundred which is good enough for youngsters to learn more about the world around them. It's a cool edu-tainment toy ... and it's a heck of alot easier to look at scabs if you don't have to cut them off your body and put them on a slide :)

I purchased the EyeClops Bionic Eye Multizoom that has a moveable arm on it for our son for Christmas. I knew nothing about it previously, except for what I learned online here at amazon.com in December '08. Our son is 10, he loves science and discovering different things. We just wanted something different to give him than the usual Xbox games, clothes and Nascar-type merchandise. The EyeClops Bionic Eye was TRULY AMAZING from the very beginning! It was SO simple to hook up to our TV and the eye PROVED IMMEDIATELY to be a wonderful show on our TV screen! It showed details of carpet fibers, the face of coins, a person's scalp line and beard (yuck) and those were just a few of the AMAZING IMAGES we focused the eye on. If you get DARING...take a look at the TASTEBUDS ON YOUR TOUNGE with it! Truly AWESOME! Both the young and old alike were "basically fixated" on his EyeClops most of Christmas Day. Since then, our son has taken it onto school with him. The teacher is having a BLAST with it! It was MORE than worth the purchase price. We would highly recommend the EyeClops Bionic Eye with Multizoom if you're interested in having a GOOD TIME!!!

Customer Review: Three EyeClops, ALL Defective
Summary: 1 Stars

I wonder what happened to the first review I entered, when I was waiting for a replacement shipment from the manufacturer to see if a THIRD EyeClops would work, which now I know doesn't. The EyeClops should display in color, but three EyeClops have proven otherwise, each displaying only black & white.

The third EyeClops, incidentally, is even worse than the others. We now have a black dot that won't disappear from display. Cleaning the EyeClops lens didn't get rid of it, and the problem is not with our TV.

After having followed Amazon's instruction to contact the manufacturer to have the defective product replaced, and with Amazon's "return window" for my purchase expiring through the process, I'm at the mercy of Amazon's response to my emailed plea for a full refund without a restocking charge. The manufacturer, of course, won't refund my money, but will Amazon?

And, will this review stay posted, unlike my first EyeClops review?

UPDATE: Amazon refunded my money.

Customer Review: Image not clear enough, kids get tired soon
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this product based on the reviews. Either I got a deffective product (it doesn't seem to be the case) or the reviewiers have set the bar very low for quality.

The problem is that the image quality is very poor. We see a sort of permanent "ghost image" of what looks like electronic circuitry, in a tone of red. Most of the stuff we looked at (ants, grains of sand, etc) appear very dark, and you can't make out the details. Looking at your skin produces the same results, you don't really see much but a bunch of shadows and vague forms. The poor quality does not motivate kids to use it; after a couple tries my kid gave up on the device. So did I.

The only thing it did well was magnify small print in labels. The enclosed treasure-hunt map has very small print with clues to be followed; you can't see them with the naked eye, but the device shows them clearly.

I do not recommend this.

Customer Review: Great toy for all ages!
Summary: 5 Stars

We gave this to our 5 (almost 6) year-old son for Christmas. It was so easy to get started playing with it. We just plugged it into the TV, and focused on any and everything we could find. Our four year old daughter and her 65-year-old grandfather had equal reactions of "Cool!, Wow!, Look at that!" The toy itself is so attractive, with its bright green and blue colors and big eye. It's a microscope while still being a toy. This toy is very durable, as it's been knocked around and fought over and continues to hold up well. You don't have to "prepare a specimen" in order to magnify. For instance, we didn't have to clip the dog's fur and put it on a slide to see it. We just placed the toy on the dog. The only drawback I can see is that young children can't play with it by themselves, as they need help focusing the lens in order to see a subject. But it's fun for the whole family, so that's ok with us.
