Toys and Games Reviews of EyeClops Bionic Eye Multizoom, Green

Customer Review: Very cool, but definitely for older children.
Summary: 3 Stars

The EyeClops sounded like a fascinating toy for my curious, nearly 6-year-old future scientist. It was really interesting when we looked at our skin and hair and the carpet.

However, it is extremely "touchy." The slightest movement would cause the picture to completely vanish from the screen, and several minutes of cycling the power and re-focusing the camera were needed before we could get a picture again. My child quickly lost interest, since he couldn't even hold the thing without losing the picture.

Although my son is very interested in science and learning about the world around him, he doesn't have the fine motor control to be able to use this device without a lot of frustration. We'll be returning our Eye-Clops in favor of something he can use more easily. This toy is really more suitable for an older child -- maybe 8 or older.

Customer Review: inspiring toy

One year ago I saw a similar product in the L.A. Science Center at $200 (with a B/W CRT monitor), and almost bought it. Not to say I was delighted to find it at this price. I believe this thing has great educational value, and I would be playing it every minute if I had it when I were young. Still it's a lot of fun to show the detailed texture to my kid.

The view is bright and clear. As any lenses, you need to play with focusing but I didn't find it to be any more difficult then in other situations.

My 4 years old can't handle it yet, but is very interested to have I examine all the toys, books, and whatever stuff can be found around. It really gives you a different perspective looking at the world, and it makes a lot of explanations of some scientific theory possible.

It opened up another window to the world.

Customer Review: Needs some tweaking at the beginning but...
Summary: 5 Stars

...it is an excellent product. You need to learn how to adjust the focus according to the test card included on the package, and press the eyepiece flat onto the thing you want to review (or either use the transparent disc, also included), but when you get the hang of it the results are awesome...obviously you won't get electronic microscope resolution, but all the things I saw with my nieces looked awesome. It was very exciting to see my 7 and 4 year old nieces with their "oohs" and "look at that", even screaming in delight when an ant crosses in front of them, looking enormous on a big TV screen. Don't know about the bad reviews, but I would shyly suggest that maybe people expect to instantaneously turn it on and see everything without problems. But you have to get the hang of it and experiment a little, once you've done that the results are amazing.

I had originally intended on getting my 9 year old son a microscope for Christmas last year, but this was new and the hot new toy so I decided to try this instead. I wish I hadn't. Firstly, you plug it into your tv, fine. But that means bringing anything you want to look at to your tv as well, also not a huge deal but something we didn't really consider before purchasing and it can be a hassle if he wants to look at bugs or something. Also you have to be pretty much on whatever you want to see for the lens to even notice it. The slightest distance away and it might as well be invisable. It's made durable enough, but could have been better. My biggest complain would just have to be not being able to see much with it. The most fun we had was touching it to our skin and hair and looking at that magnified, everything else was lame.

Customer Review: It works!
Summary: 5 Stars

We got this for our 5 y.o. for Christmas. It worked right out of the box - just plugged it into the TV and we were looking at things. One downside for kids is that you need a pretty steady hand when looking at this. As to the focal point, from what we've found, you can pretty much rest the "eye" on the object in question and it focuses just fine. Our 3 y.o. decided to adjust the focus by a lot today, but we could pretty easily get it back in focus by lining up the red lines. We might mess with that some other time.
So far the kids have enjoyed using it on everything. What do my pj's look like close up. What about my hair? What about the carpet? Pretty much anything that's in front of them is worthy of a moment to look at up close. Today we used it on my son's violin bow hair, which made practice a bit better.
